Abstract

An article of clothing impervious to X-rays and beta rays is made up at least in part by a layer or layers of pliable porous plastic material in which is or are incorporated one or more substances which absorb the rays. The layer of porous material has a multiplicity of holes between 0.3 and 10 microns in diameter extending through its thickness. The porous material, which may contain a plasticiser and may be used in conjunction with one or more fabric, felt, or leather layers, may consist of polythene, polymethyl methacrylate, polyvinyl chloride or acetate, copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride or diethyl fumarate, nylon, N-alkoxymethyl derivatives of linear polyamides, polymethylene terephthalates, cellulose acetate, or ethyl cellulose. The plasticizer may be dibutyl phthalate, tricresyl phosphate, di-2-ethyl-hexyl phthalate, dinonyl phthalate, and the polyester plasticisers described in Specification 624,393. Specified ray-absorbing substances are barium sulphate or nitrate, bismuth oxide, lead oxide, iodide, or carbonate, and finely-divided lead. The plastic material may be made porous by electrical perforation as described in Specifications 558,834, 569,968 and 614,365, [all in Group VIII] or by incorporating in the plastic material a solid substance such as starch, dextrin, or salt which is subsequently removed, e.g. by dissolving out, as described in Specications 524,063, 565,022, 576,657, 576,658, and 576,659. The sheet of plastic material may be covered with fabric on one or both sides, the layers being stuck together all over or at one or more places, e.g. around the edges, at spaced small areas, or along a series of lines which may cross at various points. The sticking may be by heat- or solvent-softening or by means of an adhesive, and the plastic layer may be made porous before or after sticking. Specifications 491,804 and 600,687, [Group VIII], also are referred to.
