Abstract

A continuous process of making an elastomeric floor covering comprises the steps of coating with a viscous plastisol the surface of a continuously advancing solid sheet of elastomeric material said elastomeric material having a blowing agent distributed therein and being of firm consistency, heating the coated sheet as it advances until the plastisol coating is converted to a jell formation, molding ridges and valleys in the jelled plastisol while supported by the solid continuously advancing elastomeric sheet, and heating the resulting product to blow the elastomeric sheet uniting it to the fused plastisol and conforming it to the ridges and valleys thereof. The upper layer may be of wear-resistant material. In the figures an elastomeric sheet material 10 having a blowing agent distributed therein, is coated with a plastisol by doctor blade 11 or by rolling or spraying. The sheet passes through oven 13 to gell the plastisol. The coated material is fed to an embossing roller and then to blowing oven 20 to fuse the layer 12/mm and blow the under layer 10\sv. At the same time a textile finish may be imparted to the exposed surface of the elastomeric sheet, by the material of the belt 16 which may be of textile. The covering may be produced in solid colours and otherwise decorated before applying a translucent or transparent wear-resistant ply. The covering may be of rubber or synthetic resin such as plasticized polyvinyl chloride or other vinyl resin or of polyethylene.
