Abstract

Compositions for the wearing layer of a floor covering comprise a vinyl resin such as polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate or vinylidene chloride, a plasticiser such as tricresyl phosphate, a filler such as short asbestos fibre or limestone, and, if desired, blown castor, cottonseed, linseed, or tung oil, a naphthalene-formaldehyde or coumarone resin, an ester or metal salt of rosin, and a pigment. In Examples 1 and 2, sheets are made from compositions containing a copolymer of vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride, tricresyl phosphate, blown linseed oil, short asbestos fibre, powdered limestone, a pigment, and, optionally, cobalt resinate driers. In Example 3 a composition containing the same copolymer and plasticiser, limestone, pigment, and lead carbonate is sheeted. The pigment may be red iron oxide.
