Abstract
A composition having improved resistance to attack by micro-organisms comprises 100 parts by weight of a polymerized vinyl resin containing predominantly combined vinyl chloride, 0 to 100 parts by weight of a plasticizer, 0.1 to 2.5 parts by weight of copper 8-quinolinolate, and 5 to 50, preferably 10 to 30 parts by weight of an N-alkyl benzenesulphonamide or an N-alkyl toluenesulphonamide, wherein the alkyl substituent contains at least 1 but not more than 8 carbon atoms, preferred sulphonamides being N-ethyl para-toluenesulphonamide, N-isopropyl benzenesulphonamide and N-isopropyl para-toluenesulphonamide. The vinyl resin may be polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer containing 95 per cent to 80 per cent by weight of combined vinyl chloride and 5 to 20 per cent by weight of combined vinyl acetate, vinyl fluoride, vinylidene chloride, diethyl maleate or methyl methacrylate. The plasticizer may be dioctyl, dibutyl or divinyl phthalate, tricresyl or trioctyl phosphate, dibutyl sebacate, dioctyl adipate, butyl phthalyl butyl glycolate or condensation products of polycarboxylic acids and polyhydric alcohols. The composition may also contain carbon black, zinc oxide, clay or wood flour, and may be formed into films or sheets.
