Abstract
1,161,878. Ring-spinning traveller. JAMES MACKIE & SONS Ltd. 7 Nov., 1966 [8 Nov., 1965], No. 47298/65. Heading D1D. An ear-shaped traveller is formed as an integral plastics moulding, the upper portion of which takes the form of a rounded loop 5 having a diameter of at least a quarter of the depth of the ring on which the traveller is designed to run, the loop having an opening adjacent a bearing surface 6 for engaging the top of the ring, and substantially all of the loop being situated above the said surface from which a toe 7 extends downwardly for engaging the outer surface of the ring. The traveller is made of nylon reinforced with glass fibres, and has a lower curved part 2 for encircling the bottom of the ring. Since the parts 2 and 6 engage below and above the ring, the diameter of the loop is related to the length of the traveller as a whole. The traveller has a surface 4 engaging the side of the ring and a considerable part of the loop lies to the left of the upward continuation of the surface. Viewed from the open side, the traveller tapers in both directions downwardly from the top of the loop. The traveller has the following advantages. The large diameter of the loop allows enlarged parts of the yarn to pass freely. The size of the loop is not goverened by the space available between the inner surface of the ring and the package. As the surface wears, the size of the loop is not affected. The tapered formation of the traveller facilitates removal of accumulated fibres when the traveller is raised from working position so that the curve 2 engages the base of the ring; with the traveller so raised, introduction of the yarn between the ring and traveller is also facilitated.
