  • the present invention relates to a retention device for retaining a valve guard on a gas cylinder in the event of a failure of the connection between the valve guard and cylinder.
  • Valve guards which attach to the neck rings of gas cylinders are well known in the art. Such valve guards substantially surround the valve assembly of the gas cylinder and prevent valve damage in the event that the cylinder is dropped or knocked over, for example during transportation. Valve guards have traditionally been designed to protect the valve assembly from impact loads and have subsequently been designed to withstand compressive rather than tensile loads.
  • keeper plates In some territories it is common to use keeper plates to prevent the valve guard from separating from the gas cylinder in the event that the neck ring fails.
  • a keeper plate has a central hole which surrounds the valve assembly underneath a flange in the valve body. The outer edge of the keeper plate sits atop an annular flange on the valve guard.
  • the present invention provides a valve guard retention device which is arranged to be connected to a cylinder, the retention device comprising an interface feature which is arranged, in use, to couple with a retention feature of an associated cylinder valve assembly to prevent uncontrolled separation of the retention device from the cylinder.
  • valve guard retention device of the present invention is advantageous as it provides integral valve guard retention protection thereby allowing gas cylinders to be more safely craned from the valve guard. Furthermore, because it is connected to the cylinder, it is less likely to be omitted during cylinder make-up.
  • valve guard retention device is arranged to be connected to the neck ring of a cylinder which provides a convenient attachment point.
  • valve guard retention device is integral with the valve guard. In this case there is no possibility that the retention device can be omitted.
  • valve guard retention device is arranged to be connected to the valve guard. This is advantageous in that it provides another way in which the retention device forms an integral part of the valve guard system and thus reduces the possibility of its omission. Indeed, in one embodiment of the invention described in detail below, it is not possible to attach the valve guard without the retention device in place.
  • valve guard retention device is arranged so that, when fitted, there is substantially no contact between the interface feature and the retention feature during normal operation of the cylinder (where normal operation of the cylinder is considered to be when there has been no failure of the connection between the valve guard and the cylinder).

  • the interface feature preferably has substantially annular form for simplicity and ease of manufacture.
  • the valve guard retention device comprises securing means to facilitate secure fitting of the retention device to a cylinder.
  • the securing means comprises a split which may extend through the entirety of the retention device, but which preferably extends only part way through the retention device in order to reduce part count and retain part strength and integrity.
  • the valve guard retention device preferably further comprises a securing feature arranged, in use, to couple with a securing device to facilitate secure fitting of the retention device to a cylinder.
  • the securing feature preferably comprises a bolt hole for receiving a securing bolt, thereby allowing the use of readily available parts and tools.
  • the present invention provides a valve guard assembly comprising a valve guard retention device as described above and at least one securing device for securing the valve guard retention device to a cylinder.
  • the securing device preferably comprises a bolt.
  • the present invention provides a method of securing a valve guard retention device to a cylinder, the method comprising: providing a valve guard retention device as described above; and attaching the valve guard retention device to the cylinder.
  • the above method preferably further comprises attaching a valve guard to the valve guard retention device.

  • the outer diameter of the retention flange 11 is greater than the diameter of the interface hole 35, such that, in use, should the neck ring fail at its connection 5 with the cylinder 2, the valve guard will be prevented from separating from the cylinder 2 since the upper surface of the retention device 30 will abut the lower surface of the retention flange 11.
  • the diameter of the interface hole 35 is greater than the diameter of the valve assembly 10 below the retention flange 11.
  • the retention device 30 does not contact the valve assembly 10 during normal operation of the cylinder assembly 1 (where normal operation of the cylinder assembly is considered to be when there has been no failure of the connection between the valve guard and the cylinder).
  • This size difference facilitates placement of the retention device 30 around the valve assembly 10 during make-up of the cylinder assembly 1.
