Definitions
- the light output of "packaged LEDs" in the COB (chip-on-board) technology is influenced by the optical properties of the surrounding package materials, in particular by the reflection and the position of the phosphor and the LED chip. It is important that the packaged materials have a) high reflectivity b) high light stability c) high thermal stability.
- FIG. 1 The typical light paths of emitted radiation of a phosphor converted white light emitting LED with a coated phosphor on the emitting surface of the LED chip is shown in FIG.
- One configuration of an LED is to place the emitter in the middle of a hemisphere so that the light can come out of the LED package with minimal reflection loss. A small percentage of the light is reflected back to the chip and surrounding area of the PCB or SMD package where it is either absorbed or reflected. If the hemispherical sphere cover is large enough, about 3% to 5% of the light, depending on the refractive index of the hemispheric material, will be reflected and lost.
- the phosphor Since the phosphor emits light in all directions, about half of the light must be reflected by the LED itself, with some more losses. Although high reflectivity is also a property that should come from the LED chip itself, its primary function is to emit efficient light, which could mean a drop in its reflectivity.
- the phosphor can also be distributed in the hemispherical sphere cover. This obviously gives no advantage in terms of light output and beam path, but color stability and color reproduction can be more easily controlled, and the light densities are not too high, which means that less glare-free efforts are required.
- An LED lamp retrofitted as a light bulb includes an LED module having a printed circuit board or an SMD carrier and a plurality of LED chips mounted on the plate or carrier, with a ball cover disposed, i , H. on the LED chips and the surface of the plate or carrier surrounding, distributed or mounted the LED chip. At least one LED chip emits blue light that is partially converted by a phosphor and at least one LED chip emits a spectrum, preferably in the red spectrum, that is not substantially affected by the phosphor.
- An LED module has a printed circuit board or an SMD carrier and at least one LED chip mounted on the plate or carrier.
- a ball cover located on the LED chip, ie on the LED chip and the surface of the plate or carrier that houses the LED chip surrounds, distributes or assembles.
- the surface of the plate or support on which the ball cover is distributed is covered with a white reflective material in contact with the LED chip, preferably on its side walls.
- the reflective material may be a layer having a thickness of between 5 ⁇ m and 250 ⁇ m, preferably 20 ⁇ m to 200 ⁇ m, more preferably 100 ⁇ m to 150 ⁇ m.
- the reflective material may be present as a layer, with the top surface being lower than the top surface of the LED chip when the LED module is viewed from the side with the LED chip on the plate or carrier.
- the reflective material may be a layer whose thickness is between 75% and 90% of the thickness of the LED chip.
- a lateral sidewall of the LED chip may be coated with a material that is configured to be reflective to light that falls on the LED chip ("white coating").
- the reflective material may be reflective to at least the spectrum of the LED chip and the color conversion material, if any ("white” coating therefore reflective to at least the visible portion of the spectrum from the LED chip and any converted spectrum is emitted).
- the LED module may emit a substantially white light which is a mixture of the spectrum of the LED chip and the emission spectrum of the color conversion material.
- the reflective material may be an electrically insulating material.
- At least one LED chip may emit a spectrum, such as blue light, that is partially downconverted from a phosphor, and at least one other LED chip emits a spectrum, such as red light, that is substantially unimpaired by the phosphor.
- the invention also relates to a retrofitted LED lamp having at least one LED module as explained above.
- Fig. 1 shows a chip package with a phosphor layer representing the prior art
- Fig. 2 shows a chip package with distributed phosphor, the state of the
- FIG. 3 shows a chip package with a white coating according to a preferred embodiment of the invention
- FIG. 4 shows an LED chip package with an additional dam to define an outer mold for the white coating.
- FIG. 5 shows a white coating applied to the LED chip-pack in a lateral emission LED chip.
- FIG. 6 shows a white coating applied to an SMD package with an LED chip with an existing side emission,
- Fig. 7 shows a converted LED module, which is known from DE 20 2007 008 258 A1 and with which the present
- FIG. 8 shows a further development of the embodiment of FIGS. 5 and 6.
- a reflective coating may be applied to the surface of the carrier or board on which the LED chip is mounted and surrounding the LED chip.
- the reflective coating may cover all parts with limited reflectivity, and in particular parts covered by the ball cover.
- More than one LED chip may be positioned under the same ball cover (with a ball cover being just one example of a phosphor-containing element disposed over the LED chips). "Ball cover” therefore simply stands for an element that is arranged on one or more LED chips.
- One or more of these LEDs can emit light of the blue spectrum that is partially down-converted by the phosphor.
- one or more LEDs may emit spectra that are not substantially downconverted by the phosphor. This is the case, for example, for at least one red light-emitting LED chip which is covered by a phosphor which is intended for the down-conversion of the blue light.
- This arrangement can be used for a converted LED module, ie an LED module with electrical connections that are comparable to a light bulb or a halogen lamp.
- This converted module is shown in DE 20 2007 008 258 U1, the disclosure of which is hereby incorporated by reference. Reference is made in particular to FIG. 1 of DE 20 2007 008 258 U1, which is attached as FIG. 7 to the present description.
- the plate 4 and LEDs 7 shown in Fig. 4 may also be those according to the present invention.
- the ball cover may be a distributed ball cover or a preformed generally hemispherical lens element.
- the sidewalls of the LED chip may also be coated since they are typically made on the basis of silicon, a semiconductor with known low reflectivity. With this construction method, all reflection limitations can be minimized, resulting in optimal performance.
- solder resist layers on the PCBs show a reflectivity of typically 90%, some down to as low as 60%. Also, the reflection for some types of thermal processes in manufacturing changes. The reflection of a gold plating is even worse due to significant absorption of blue light. This can be prevented by, for example, using pads made of silver, but the migration speed of gold is much lower than that of silver, which can lead to lower reliability. To maximize performance, high reflectivity should be sought, which can be realized by the reflective coating.
- the coating of the reflective material may be applied by standard distribution techniques, and may have a thickness of 5 ⁇ m to 250 ⁇ m, preferably 20 ⁇ m to 200 ⁇ m, more preferably 100 ⁇ m to 150 ⁇ m.
- the LED chip may be mounted on its support structure using an adhesive or adhesive. These materials have the undesirable tendency to flow upwards on the lateral walls of the LED chip.
- the white coating of the present invention preferably has a thickness high enough to ensure that the white coating is actually in contact with the LED chip above any flowing adhesive or adhesive. In this regard, the thickness of the white coating is chosen to be higher than the expected flowing height.
- the thickness measured from the surface of the plate or carrier is about 75% to 90% of the thickness of the LED chip.
- the upper surface of the reflective material layer is lower, but substantially parallel to the upper surface (light emitting surface) of the LED chip.
- the achieved improvement in light output is in the range of 15% over the visible range for white LEDs of, for example, normal white light.
- Typical pigments, the z. B. are used in a resin matrix of the reflective material, are electrically non-conductive materials, for example, TiO 2 , BaSO 3 , ZrO 2 , BaTiO 3 . Also disclosed is a method of making such an LED that includes a white coating layer.
- the layer of reflective material may have bevelled sidewalls, i. H. non-vertical side walls.
- the ball cover may be in the form of a hemisphere.
- the color conversion material may be provided, for example, in the silicone matrix of the ball cover and / or on the LED chip (see FIG. 1).
- Fig. 4 shows an LED chip package with an additional dam to define an outer shape of the white coating.
- the dam is preferably formed before the white coating is applied.
- the dam may preferably be made of a material such as a silicone-based material and therefore of a material different from the material of the white coating.
- the thickness of the white coating is preferably less than 50% of the height of the LED chip, more preferably less than 25%, most preferably less than 10%.
- FIG. 5 may be further developed as shown in FIG. 8 by placing the LED chip on a carrier whose contours, viewed from above, are equal to or less than the contours of the LED chip in at least one dimension are. Therefore, the white coating may optionally flow and thus be present under the bottom surface of the LED chip.
- This carrier may have a height that is greater than the thickness of the white coating.
- the surface of the carrier surrounding the LED chip may be notched, for example by etching.
- Fig. 6 shows an example of an SMD package with a side-emitting LED chip.
- the thickness of the white coating is preferably less than 50% of the height of the LED chip, more preferably less than 25%, most preferably less than 10%.
- the LED chip of FIG. 6 is mounted on an LED package carrier, which in turn is soldered to, for example, a PCB.

Description
Da in einigen
