Definitions

  • the invention relates to an arrangement for a manually operated humidifier according to the preamble of claim 1. It aims to provide a compact, maintenance-friendly peripheral device for a mail processing machine.
  • the invention is used in addition to franking machines in similar booking or mail processing equipment in which the mail is fed manually.
  • Humidifiers are used in conjunction with mail closure devices, particularly mailers with a tab having a glue edge.
  • a moistening device for letter boards in connection with franking machines known.
  • a lying envelope supplied has on its underside a folded but not yet glued tab.
  • the moistening device has a table top and a fold-over sword-shaped flap, which is provided in the area on the table top underside in the area near the flap tip with a moistening strip which penetrates between the envelope of the flap and the latter moistened when the envelope is moved further.
  • the moistening strip is held by spring tongues, which also presses the tab of a letter envelope passed through the moistening device against the moistening strip, so that the adhesive edge is moistened.
  • This moistening device was already used for the applicant's CM 7000 electric postage meter machines in the 1970s and in an insignificantly improved form for the applicant's MS 5 Curier and MS 5 WK franking machines in the 1980s and in virtually unchanged form for electronic franking machines of the type T1000 and used in an improved form for electronic franking machines of the type EFS of the applicant in the 90s of the twentieth century.
  • Applicant's thermal transfer postage meter T1000 has a thermal transfer printhead fixedly disposed in the housing for printing a franking imprint and a compartment externally mounted on the housing for receiving a replaceable ribbon cassette (US Pat. US 4,767,228 ).
  • a manual humidifier may be preceded by the thermal transfer postage meter T1000, which essentially consists of a casing, tank, gasket, flap and humidifier rocker. The screwing of the parts is done for visual reasons usually from below.
  • the humidifier rocker is fitted with a natural felt mounted in a holder which, by means of spring force, presses on a natural felt underneath which is integrated into the casing and acts as a water transfer means to supply the water in the tank to the upper natural felt.
  • the filler opening is openly arranged in comparable devices of other franking machine manufacturers, for example Pitney Bowes for a DM 300 franking machine, in order to allow easy refilling ( US6,406,591B1 ), but the water level is reduced more by evaporation, so that the water tank of the device can dry out during prolonged downtime of the postage meter.
  • the corresponding solutions for powered letterpress machines of the EFS and Ultimail® franking machines of the applicant are more complex and both have an additional removable tank and a ball valve integrated in the closure lid on the underside of the tank.
  • a type V3000 letterpress machine for EFS type franking machines consists of an automatic separating and feeding device with a downstream humidifier and letterpress device.
  • the additional removable tank When viewed from the front, the additional removable tank is behind the humidifier and can be removed upwards.
  • a tank with floating ball closure exists in comparable devices of other franking machine manufacturers, for example US 5,209,806 by Pitney Bowes. Such a ball closure can reduce evaporation, but also complicate the filling of water.
  • such an additional removable tank with ball closure is more expensive, which makes the production more expensive. Dehydration of the water tank, on the other hand, would lead to time-consuming start-up problems of the system after refilling, since dried moistening elements and especially natural felts are difficult to rewet and easily form mildew and mildew on dehydration.
  • the upper humidifier elements threatened by drying out in the Ultimail or EFS of the Applicant or in the manual humidifier US Pat. No. 6,406,591 B1 (Pitney Bowes ) instead of using felt brush, but can store less water and also easier to contaminate by the tab adhesive.
  • the type V3000 letterpress machine for EFS franking machines has a brush with a backfilled felt storage in the upper part of the humidifier.
  • These felt accumulators usually absorb water via a wick from above from the lower tank area, while the flap of the item prevents the absorption via the lower transfer material.
  • this complicates the accessibility of the humidifier elements and may easily result in the upper humidifier not resting on the lower transmitter material when the flexible wick prevents it from folding.
  • the pressure of the upper humidifier elements on the lower transfer material or the bottle can be reinforced by a spring, which leads to a safer water transfer and thus bonding the flap of the envelope.
