Definitions
- the invention relates to a method for producing a high carbon content martensitic steel strip.
- Steel strips of this type are usually produced from continuously cast slabs, which are then hot rolled.
- Such produced stainless for example, under the material numbers 1.4110 or 1.4116 known martensitic steels tend especially when they have higher carbon and chromium contents, during rolling to central splitting of the slabs. In the subsequent hot strip rolling, this can lead to blistering and ski-like tears that cause significant process disturbances.
- JP-A 2-182397 A discloses a method for producing thin steel strips having a thickness of 0.3-0.6 mm, which can be used as welding consumables for build-up welding.
- a melt containing (by weight) more than 0.1% C, up to 1% Si, up to 1% V, up to 1% Mo, up to 2% Mn, as well as certain Formulas of Cr contents of at least 9% and Ni contents of up to 1%, balance iron and unavoidable impurities contains, poured in a thin layer directly on a roller. The melt reaching the roller solidifies there and can then be removed as a belt from the roller.
- the steel strip thus obtained has a martensitic structure at a high carbon content.
- a prerequisite for this possibility of producing cast strip is a combination of a particularly small thickness of the strip to be produced with a special casting device. Only by the small thickness is achieved in the known from JP 2-182397 A prior art that the melt is sufficiently solidified on the casting roll when it is removed as a band of her. At the same time, only a special casting device makes it possible to keep the melt in contact with the respective casting roll by way of a circumferential section which is sufficiently long for its solidification, before it is removed as a strip from the casting roll. Larger strip thicknesses can not be produced in this way, since on the one hand the required layer thicknesses are not achieved on the casting roll and on the other hand can not be guaranteed that the thicker applied melt is solidified when it reaches the collection point.
- the object of the invention was to provide a cost-effective method for the production of high-carbon martensitic stainless steel strips, which meet even the highest quality requirements in terms of appearance, usability and corrosion resistance of the final product made from them.
- This object is achieved according to the invention by a method for producing a high carbon content martensitic steel strip in which a steel having (in wt%) C: ⁇ 0.15%, Cr: 12.0 - 20.0%, Si: ⁇ 1.0%, Mn: ⁇ 2.0% , Mo: ⁇ 2.0%, Ni: ⁇ 1.0%, V: ⁇ 1.0%, N: ⁇ 0.1%, Ti: ⁇ 0.1%, remaining iron and unavoidable impurities is melted and at in which the melted molten steel is poured in a casting gap formed between two rotating rolls or rollers to a thin strip having a thickness of at least 1 mm to a maximum of 10 mm, wherein the rollers or rollers are cooled so strong that the thin strip in the casting gap with a cooling rate of at least 200 K / s cools.
- the steel contains 13.00 to 16.00 wt% Cr, 0.5 to 1 wt% Mo and 0.3 to 0.60 wt% C.
- the contents of Cr, Mo and C are optimized in the alloy used according to the invention with respect to the effect of these elements.
- Carbon as an austenite former, causes an increase in martensite hardness, but tends to segregate, leading to the risk of primary carbide formation.
- Cr and Mo as strong ferrite formers, tend to constrict the austenite area at high temperatures and increase the corrosion resistance of the steel. Mo improves corrosion resistance to a greater extent than Cr. This is especially true with regard to pitting resistance, in which the effect of molybdenum is about three times better than that of chromium. However, too high Mo contents can lead to segregations with the danger of formation of primary carbides.
- the molten steel is cast between the rolls or rolls of, for example, a two-roll casting machine known in technical jargon as a "double-roller". According to the invention, it is cooled down so much that the formation of macrosegregations is greatly reduced.
- a steel strip produced according to the invention has excellent performance characteristics as a result of avoiding macrosegregation.
- macrosegregations which occur in conventional steel slabs of the same composition in the form of extensive carbon accumulations in the residual melt are the cause of the poor quality and processing characteristics of conventionally produced steel strips of the generic type.
- steel strips produced according to the invention are particularly suitable for the production of high-quality cutlery, such as knife cutting or similar products, on the outer appearance on the one hand and on their corrosion resistance and resilience during manufacture and use, on the other hand, the highest quality requirements.
- the chemical composition of the matrix at the edge and in the core of the slab is different due to segregation and primary carbide formation. This results in two different optimal hardening temperatures.
- the hardening temperature used in practice is always a compromise.
- an optimum hardening temperature is applicable.
- the wear properties can be improved by the targeted introduction of fine carbides whose size and volume can be controlled by the chemistry of the steel used and the cooling rate.
- the inventive method can be carried out on conventional casting machines, without the need for additional units or costly process steps are required.
- a high quality steel strip can be produced cost-effectively, which has significantly improved product properties compared to conventionally produced steel strips of the same composition.
- the thickness of the thin strip cast in the course of carrying out the method according to the invention is preferably set as close as possible to the desired final thickness.
- the thin strip thickness is 1 mm to 5 mm, in particular 1 mm to 3 mm.
- Such thin strips can be processed with little effort to hot-rolled strip with a thickness that makes immediate processing to the final product without intermediate cold rolling possible.
- the hot rolling is preferably carried out inline following the strip casting by hot-rolling the cast thin strip leaving the casting gap in a working step following continuously on the casting.
- the overall degree of deformation achieved during hot rolling should typically be 25-40%.
- a slab with a thickness of 240 mm was produced by continuous casting from a molten steel having a comparable composition given in Table 2 below.
- Table 2 C Si Mn P S Cr Not a word V rest 0.55 0.4 0.33 0,018 0,002 14.5 0.66 0.09 Fe, Verun. Data in% by weight
- the mass fractions of C, Cr, Mo are plotted over the thickness of the thin strip cast according to the invention. It shows each a uniform, substantially homogeneous distribution. For none of the considered elements are special enrichments observed in the middle of the band. This is particularly noteworthy in relation to the mass distribution of C and Cr, whose strong center-band concentration leads to problems in processing and product quality.
- the finely distributed carbides in the thin strip cast according to the invention lead to an increase in the carbide density and thus to the solidification of the matrix of the steel. As a result, it is less easily washed out under abrasive load. As a result, the fine distribution of the carbides thus leads to an increase in the cutting resistance and service life of the end products produced from thin strips produced according to the invention, such as knife edges or the like.
- Diagrams 2, 4 and 6 show the distributions of mass fractions of C, Cr and Mo for an 80 mm center layer of the slab produced for comparison purposes. In each case, a significant accumulation of the respective alloying constituent in the slab center can be observed.
- the carbon which is partially bonded in roughly formed primary carbides, reaches mass fractions of up to 2.5%.
