Definitions
- the invention relates to binding spines for binding sheets.
- Such spines are known for example from EP-A-0 704 322. They are injection molded from plastic. Any sprayable or thermally deformable plastic material which is elastic in the hardened state can be used as the plastic.
- Polythene is preferably used as a binder.
- the starting material for the plastic is plastic granulate.
- Another known method is to punch out binding spines from plastic film made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and then to heat the punched out film and roll it into a cylindrical shape. This creates a lot of punched out material as waste.
- PVC also poses environmental problems in the form of toxic gases.
- the present invention proposes polypropylene (PP) as a particularly advantageous material for the production of binding spines by injection molding.
- Polypropylene is cheaper, lighter in weight and easier to spray than polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which was previously only used for punching and rolling processes.
- PVC polyvinyl chloride
- PVC would develop toxic and corrosive vapors during the spraying process.
- PP usually only has about half the modulus of elasticity of PVC: PVC usually 3000 - 3500 N / mm 2 PP usually 1500 - 1900 N / mm 2
- the unsatisfactory impact strength of binding spines made of high-strength PP homopolymer becomes apparent when documents that are bound with such binding spines run through postmark machines and thereby break the binding spines under the postmark.
- the invention has determined in long series of tests that mixtures of high-strength PP homopolymer and PP block copolymer with mixing ratios of about 80/20 to 20/80, preferably about 50/50, are ideally suited for the production of sprayed binding ridges. Bindings that consist only of PP block copolymer have shown insufficient strength.
- the object of the invention is to produce stable, thin-walled binding spines made of plastic in an injection molding process faster and cheaper than with Polyethylene is possible without having the disadvantages of polyvinyl chloride (PVC).
- PVC polyvinyl chloride
- FIG. 1 shows a binding spine according to the invention, with which sheets of paper or another material are bound
- FIG. 1 is an end view from above of the spine of FIG. 1,
- FIG. 3 is a broken rear view from the left on the binding spine of FIG. 1.
- the binding spine 2 according to the invention shown in FIGS. 1, 2 and 3 was produced in one piece from plastic by injection molding.
- the plastic consists of at least two types of polypropylene mixed with one another before injection molding Mixing ratio between about 80/20 to 50/50.
- the plastic mixture preferably consists of high-strength polypropylene homopolymer and polypropylene block copolymer in a mixing ratio in the range from about 80/20 to about 20/80, preferably in the range from about 50/50.
- the binding spine 2 consists in one piece of a back part 4 and fingers 6 extending towards it in a loop shape on one side.
- the fingers 6 extend through holes 8 in sheets 10 to close to the other side of the binding spine.
- the fingertips 12 can overlap the back part 4.
- the fingertips 12 do not overlap the back part 4, as shown in the drawings, because then the injection molding tool can be made simpler, in particular a mandrel of the
- Injection molding tool can be pulled out of the interior in the longitudinal direction of the binding spine, which is delimited by the back part 4 and the fingers 6.
- the back part 4 and its fingers 6 can, seen in cross section, form a circular or oval or polygonal ring.
- the back part 4 can be designed with or without lateral projections 14 which protrude between the fingertips 12 opposite to the fingers.
- more than two different types of polypropylene can be mixed together. The mixing is preferably carried out by mixing granules of the different types with one another before they are formed into a binding spine by the injection molding process.
