Definitions

  • the invention relates to binding spines for binding sheets.
  • Such spines are known for example from EP-A-0 704 322. They are injection molded from plastic. Any sprayable or thermally deformable plastic material which is elastic in the hardened state can be used as the plastic.
  • Polythene is preferably used as a binder.
  • the starting material for the plastic is plastic granulate.
  • Another known method is to punch out binding spines from plastic film made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and then to heat the punched out film and roll it into a cylindrical shape. This creates a lot of punched out material as waste.
  • PVC also poses environmental problems in the form of toxic gases.
  • the present invention proposes polypropylene (PP) as a particularly advantageous material for the production of binding spines by injection molding.
  • Polypropylene is cheaper, lighter in weight and easier to spray than polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which was previously only used for punching and rolling processes.
  • PVC polyvinyl chloride
  • PVC would develop toxic and corrosive vapors during the spraying process.
  • PP usually only has about half the modulus of elasticity of PVC: PVC usually 3000 - 3500 N / mm 2 PP usually 1500 - 1900 N / mm 2
  • the unsatisfactory impact strength of binding spines made of high-strength PP homopolymer becomes apparent when documents that are bound with such binding spines run through postmark machines and thereby break the binding spines under the postmark.
  • the invention has determined in long series of tests that mixtures of high-strength PP homopolymer and PP block copolymer with mixing ratios of about 80/20 to 20/80, preferably about 50/50, are ideally suited for the production of sprayed binding ridges. Bindings that consist only of PP block copolymer have shown insufficient strength.
  • the object of the invention is to produce stable, thin-walled binding spines made of plastic in an injection molding process faster and cheaper than with Polyethylene is possible without having the disadvantages of polyvinyl chloride (PVC).
