The device includes as metal block (14) releasably fitted in a terminal compartment (2-5) at the back of the housing (B) of the circuit breaker (D) and provided with an elongate through-hole for receiving a circuit breaker terminal strip (6-9), and a clamping screw (23) extending through the upper portion of the block (14) for clamping the cable against the contact (6-9). Claims (11)

  1. A device for connecting an external conductor such as a cable to a contact strip of an electrical apparatus such as a moulded case circuit breaker, of the kind comprising a metal block housed in removable manner in a terminal compartment provided in the rear part of the case of the circuit breaker, there being an elongate passage designed to receive a terminal strip of the circuit breaker passing through said block, and a pressure screw passing through the upper part of the block in order to perform clamping of the cable against the contact strip,
    characterized in that the above-mentioned pressure screw (23) comprises a quadrangular-shaped securing pad (24) at its end situated inside the block (14), said pad (24) comprising at each of its comers a claw (25 to 28) cooperating with a recess (29 to 32) of complementary shape, provided on the above-mentioned contact strip (6 to 9) and located facing said claw, to secure the cable positively between the pad (24) and the contact strip (6 to 9) when tightening of the screw (23) is performed, and that the terminal compartment comprises a pair of elongate grooves (18, 19) respectively formed on two internal surfaces (2a, 2b) of the terminal compartment (2 to 5) and designed to receive a butterfly nut or similar (20).
  2. The device according to claim 1, characterized in that the above-mentioned grooves (18, 19) are arranged in the bottom part of the compartment (2 to 5).
  3. The device according to claim I or 2, characterized in that three facing orifices (20b, 43, 44) are provided respectively in the butterfly nut (20), in the contact strip (6 to 9) and in the bottom part of the compartment (2 to 5), said orifices being designed for the passage of a fixing screw (50) of a connector (42) or a bar to the above-mentioned contact strip (6 to 9).
  4. The device according to any one of the foregoing claims, characterized in that a terminal cover plate (41) is fixed onto the rear part of the circuit breaker, said plate (41) comprising, facing each terminal, an opening (40) for passage of the conductor, and that the above-mentioned pressure screw (23) is fixedly secured in translation to a protection shield (33) able to come and partially blank off the corresponding opening (40) of the plate (41) when the screw (23) is tightened.
  5. The device according to claim 4, characterized in that the above-mentioned shield (33) is formed by an L-shaped part, one of the whose wings (33a) is mounted rotating freely around the bottom part of the screw (23) between the securing pad (24) and the upper part (34) of the block (14) and whose other wing (33b) extends towards the upper part of the block (14).
  6. The device according to any one of the foregoing claims, characterized in that the securing pad (24) is fixed to one of the ends of the shank of the screw (23) by crimping.
  7. The device according to any one of the foregoing claims, characterized in that each of the compartments (2 to 5) has an associated additional contact strip (46) designed to be electrically connected to an external device such as a voltage indicator lamp.
  8. The device according to any one of the foregoing claims, characterized in that the terminal cover plate (41) is fixed to the rear part of the circuit breaker by means of rails (41a) provided on the internal surface of the plate (41) cooperating with grooves of corresponding shape (41b) arranged in the rear part of the case of the apparatus.
  9. The device according to claim 8, characterized in that the grooves (41b) for fixing the plate (41) present a T-shaped transverse section and extend perpendicularly to the longitudinal direction of the apparatus, in spaces separating two adjacent compartments.
  10. A switchgear apparatus such as a circuit breaker, comprising on at least one of its two large side faces terminal compartments (2 to 5) inside which contact strips (6 to 9) extend, characterized in that it comprises at least one connection device according to any one of the claims 1 to 9.
  11. The switchgear apparatus according to claim 10, characterized in that it comprises several connection devices according to any one of the claims 1 to 9, and that at least one of the pressure screws with securing pad (23) is replaced by a screw with a convex end (22) cooperating with a contact strip (6) presenting the above-mentioned recesses (29 to 32).
