Definitions
- the invention relates to an electrical contact arrangement for a switching device with a fixed contact carrier arrangement and a movable contact carrier arrangement, each of which carries opposing contacts, the movable contact carrier arrangement being movable by an actuating device in the direction of the fixed contact carrier arrangement in order to interconnect the contacts, and with at least one Arc discharge device which projects from one of the contact arrangements in the direction of the other contact arrangement.
- the invention is used in switching devices, in particular in electromagnetic relays or the like for switching alternating or direct currents.
- the aim of the invention is to avoid the disadvantages of known systems and to provide an electrical contact arrangement which is suitable for switching off high currents and at the same time offers an arc quenching mechanism which is simple in construction, requires little parts and has a compact arrangement with a small space requirement enables.
- This arc extinguishing mechanism should also not require any additional device for moving the arc, such as a magnet.
- this object is achieved with a contact arrangement of the type mentioned in the introduction in that one of the two contact carrier arrangements is formed from two contact arms, each of which is provided with a connection and the contacts of which lie next to one another in one plane, in that the other contact carrier arrangement has a bridge contact carrier with a bridge contact has, which bridges the two aforementioned contacts in the closed position, and that two baffles are provided on the outer sides of the contact arms or the bridge support approximately on both sides of the contacts.
- the two contact arms are preferably arranged as an elongated sheet metal strip in a common plane, while the bridge contact carrier is arranged approximately as a leaf spring strip in a plane parallel to it. Either the two contact arms provided with connections can form the fixed contact carrier arrangement, while the bridge contact carrier serves as a movable contact arrangement, or a reverse function is also possible.
- the two deflector plates are preferably formed in one piece either on the outer edges of the two contact arms facing away from one another or on the outer edges of the bridge contact carrier; they each face at least a section of the bridge contact carrier or a contact arm, in the vicinity of the actual switch contacts, in order to also be able to perform the function of the arc discharge.

- the contacts are shown in the open state.
- a current i flows from the fixed contact arm 2 through the fixed contact 4, then via the bridge contact 8, the second fixed contact 3 to the fixed contact arm 1.
- This current i generates a magnetic field M1 in the contact arm 2 and the fixed contact 4 with a first field direction, while the same current i flows in the fixed contact arm 1 in the opposite direction and thus in this contact arm 1 and the fixed contact 3 a magnetic field M2 generated with a field direction that is opposite to that of the magnetic field M1.
- the opposite magnetic fields M1 and M2 cause a magnetic repulsive force between the fixed contacts 3 and 4, which is indicated in the drawing by the double arrow 13.
- the magnetic fields M1 and M2 continue to act, and the resulting repulsive force 13 moves the two arcs 14 and 15 away from one another in the direction of the arc deflection plates 11 and 12.
- the arc baffles 11 and 12 provide additional material and surface area for the arcs where they continue to burn until conditions are such that they can no longer exist.
- no additional magnetic means are required to deflect an arc in the direction of the associated deflecting plate and to extinguish the arc.
- FIG. 5 shows a modification of the contact arrangement of Figure 4.
- This figure shows a pair of fixed contact arms 21 and 22 with their respective connection ends 21a and 22a and the associated front ends 21b and 22b, the latter being provided with fixed contacts 23 and 24.
- two arc discharge plates 25 and 26 are provided, which extend from the front ends 21b and 22b of the fixed ones Extend contact arms 21 and 22 away.
- a movable contact arm 27 is provided in this case, which has a widened front end 27b and a bridge contact 28 fastened thereon.

- FIG. 6 shows a relay without a housing cap, which contains a further modification of the contact arrangement from FIG. 4.
- the relay comprises an excitation coil 51 (shown on the unwound coil carrier) on a coil body 52, which contains a continuous magnetic core 53 inside.
- the relay further comprises an armature 54 which is mounted on a yoke at one end and is coupled to a slide 56 at the other end.
- the slider 56 suspended on a return spring 55 couples the armature 54 to the movable contact arm 7 of the contact arrangement.
- the contact assembly may have terminal ends 1a and 2a of the fixed contact arms 1 and 2 in a configuration such that they facilitate the assembly of the relay.
- FIG. 6 shows connection ends 1a and 2a, which project laterally from the fixed contact arms 1 and 2, respectively.
- the function of this modified contact arrangement is the same as described above. It should also be noted that each of the contact arrangements described can be modified in a similar manner.
- the contact arms provided with individual contacts can be movable, while the opposite contact arm can be designed to be stationary with the bridge contact.
- the deflector plates can also be provided either on the movable or the fixed contact arms. It is essential in any case that irrespective of the special design of the contact arms and the actuating mechanism, two opposing current paths are provided on the contacts, which generate mutually repelling magnetic fields for arcing when switching off.
- the baffles can of course be formed in any shape and material to cause an arc to deflect from the contacts onto the baffles and then extinguish the arc.
- the deflection plates are preferably made of stainless steel and extend obliquely away from the contact arm in question.

Abstract
