Description

The present invention relates to a watch case comprising a middle and a back, said box being intended to receive a movement surmounted by a dial and a set of hands.

It is well known to provide a watch case with different dials as to their appearance. These dials can have different materials or different graphics that meet the taste of the moment. Thus during assembly, the SWATCH watch (registered trademark) can be equipped with one of the multiple dials designed by the imagination of stylists. These dials, however, have only one and only one dimension, circular in the majority of cases. However, it has proven useful to be able to offer not only dials with various graphics, but also, for the same build, dials whose dimensions differ. This increases the variants that can be offered to the buyer.

To obtain this result, the present invention is characterized in that the middle part has at least first and second annular shoulders arranged in steps to receive a choice and respectively a first dial having a first dimension or a second dial having a second larger dimension than the first.

The invention will now be understood on reading the description which follows and illustrated by the drawing giving several examples of embodiment, drawing in which:
  • FIG. 1 is a section through the watch case of the invention where the dial which is shown there has a reduced first dimension,
  • FIG. 2 is a section in the same watch case where the dial which is shown there has a second dimension larger than that of FIG. 1,
  • FIG. 3 is a section through the watch case of the invention, this section showing a second embodiment of said invention, and
  • Figure 4 is a section in the watch case of the invention, this section showing a third embodiment of said invention.

The watch case presented in FIGS. 1 and 2 comprises a middle part 1 and a base 2. FIG. 1 is a section made at 6 o'clock or at 12 o'clock, since there is shown there a housing 26 which serves to retain a bracelet. Figure 2 is a section at 3 o'clock showing the bore 25 intended to be crossed by a time-setting rod. The box is capable of receiving a movement, not shown, which takes place in the space referenced 27. The movement is surmounted by a dial 9 or 10 and a set of hands 6 or 5 respectively. The figures show a bottom 2 made of a part with the middle part 1, but it is clear that the bottom 2 could be independent.

As seen in Figures 1 and 2, the invention is mainly characterized in that the middle part 1 has at least a first shoulder 7 and a second shoulder 8 arranged in steps. In the case of Figure 1, the first shoulder 7 receives a first dial 9 having a first dimension. In the case of FIG. 2, the second shoulder 8 receives a second dial 10 having a second dimension larger than the first, the dial 10 being housed on the upper step. Thus during assembly, carried out for example on an automatic chain, one can choose to equip the watch either with a dial 9 of small dimension, or with a dial 10 of large dimension.

Le cadran 9 est surmonté d'un jeu d'aiguilles 6 courtes adapté aux dimensions du cadran 9 et de la glace 11.Figure 1 shows that the small size dial 9 is adapted to a first type of ice 11 also small. To fill the void created between the glass 11 and the edge of the middle part 1 has been arranged a bezel 13. This bezel, in addition to hiding the free space of the second shoulder 8 which is not used, makes it possible to bring the watch an attractive aesthetic appearance. It is mounted notch on the ice and can be fixed or rotating. The dial 9 is surmounted by a set of short needles 6 adapted to the dimensions of the dial 9 and the crystal 11.

The glass 12 joins the edge of the middle part 1 without it being necessary to provide a telescope. The dial 10 is surmounted by a set of needles 5 of larger dimension, adapted to the dimensions of the dial 10 and of the crystal 12.

It will be observed that, in both cases, the sets of needles 6 and 5 are located at an equal distance from the windows 11 and 12, which makes it possible to use the same type of movement with a similar needle axis. With regard to the movement, it should be noted that it may be an independent movement mounted by the top of the case or a movement mounted on the bottom 2 as is well known from the SWATCH watch cited above. . To return to the sets of hands, it will be noted that, in the case of FIG. 2, the set 5 is closer to the dial 10 and that, in the case of FIG. 1, the set 6 is located further from the dial 9.

The middle part 1 and the two types of glass 11 and 12 shown in FIG. 1 and 2 are made of heat-sealable thermoplastic materials. For example, the middle part 1 is made of a material chosen from the group comprising acrylic butadiene styrene (ABS) and the glasses 11 and 12 are made of a transparent acrylic resin (PMMA). Means are provided for assembling one or the other lens and the middle part, these means comprising a localized zone 14 or 15 constituted by a mixture of said heat-sealable materials together. The two types of ice 11 and 12 also have a annular clamping surface 16, respectively 17, to maintain the chosen dial 9 or 10 on its corresponding shoulder 7 or 8 when the crystal is assembled to the middle part. The interested reader will profitably read a description of this technique in document EP-B-0 101 663 (US-A-4 558 957). It is therefore not necessary to expand here further on this process.

Thus, in summary of what has been explained above, it is easily possible, during assembly of the watch, to choose a dial 9 of small dimension or a dial 10 of larger dimension, these dials adapting to the same middle 1 thanks to the fact that said middle has two different shoulders arranged in steps. Each of these dials has a corresponding crystal, one with a bezel and the other without a bezel. This corresponds to a first embodiment of the invention. One can imagine other embodiments of the invention, two of which will be reviewed below.

These modes of execution have common points. In both cases, in fact, the middle part 1 is shaped to receive a single type of glass, either the glass 18 of FIG. 3 or the glass 19 of FIG. 4. These glass 18 or 19 are adapted either to the second dial 10 of large dimension when the latter is housed on the second shoulder 8, that is to say a ring 20 housed in said second shoulder 8, this ring now in place the first dial 9 when the latter is housed on the first shoulder 7.

In FIG. 3, the large-sized glass 18 has an annular tightening surface 17 which holds in place a ring 20 housed on the second shoulder 8, this ring in turn holding in place a dial 9 of small dimension housed on the first shoulder 7. In this case, and without it being necessary to represent it, if a large dial 10 was chosen, it would be housed on the shoulder 8 and retained by the clamping surface 17, the ring 20 then failing. The dial 9 corresponds to the set of short needles 6 and to the dial 10 the set of long needles 5. In this second embodiment, the middle part 1 and the crystal 18 are made, as in the first mode, of plastic materials heat sealable, means being provided for assembling the crystal and the middle part, these means consisting of a localized zone 21 constituted by a mixture of the heat sealable materials together.

Au cadran 10 correspond préférablement un jeu d'aiguilles longues 5 et au cadran 9, un jeu d'aiguilles courtes 6.In FIG. 4, the glass 19 and the middle part 1 are assembled by means of a compressible lining 22 interposed between these elements. In this case, the middle part 1 is preferably metallic and the lens 19 is made of glass. A flange 23 is located under the glass 19 and this flange has an annular tightening surface 24 which holds in place a large dial 10 housed on its shoulder 8. Here also and without it being necessary to represent it, if a dial 9 of small dimension was chosen, it would be housed on the shoulder 7 and retained in place by a ring 20 (see FIG. 3) itself held in place by the clamping surface 24 of the flange 23. The dial 10 corresponds preferably a set of long hands 5 and on the dial 9, a set of short hands 6.

The ring 20 provided for the second and third embodiments, superimposed in step on the dial 9 of small dimension, gives a particular appearance to the watch and can be coated with an original or personalized graphics.

Finally, it will be noted that, for one or other of the modes chosen, the peripheral shape of the dials and the glass has not been mentioned above. These can be circular or any other shape.
