Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a nozzle device according to the preamble of patent claim 1.
  • a method and apparatus for degassing molten metal is disclosed in U.S. Patent No. 4,177,066.
  • the invention of this cited patent teaches degassing molten metal using a device consisting of a vortex tank reactor, the molten metal being introduced tangentially into the reactor and the molten metal being fed in a vortex motion from the reactor inlet to the reactor outlet.
  • the metal inlet be arranged with respect to the reactor wall in such a way that the molten metal is fed tangentially into the reactor.
  • the vortex tank reactor comprises a first part which is essentially equipped with a cylindrical side wall, and underneath, under the first, essentially cylindrical side wall part, a second side wall part which narrows downwards.
  • the gas injection nozzles for the purge gas are arranged in the walls of the narrowing side wall part in different positions in order to optimize the bubble distribution of the purge gas through the entire melt during the passage from the reactor inlet to the reactor outlet. Due to the arrangement of the spray nozzles at different heights of the narrowing wall part, these are at different distances from the central axis of the vortex tank reactor, thus achieving a maximum gas bubble distribution.
  • the details of the various parts of the vortex tank reactor and the spray nozzle arrangements as disclosed in U.S. Patent No. 4,177,066 can also be used with the improved gas injector system of the present invention.
  • EP-A-70 799 describes a nozzle device as a purge gas inlet for use in a vortex tank reactor according to the aforementioned US Pat. No. 4,177,066.
  • the gas introduction system comprises a nozzle insert which is securely inserted in the wall of the vortex tank reactor and is flush with the inner reactor wall.
  • the nozzle insert is equipped with a seat surface, which in turn is shaped to match a nozzle tip cone made of ceramic material or the like.
  • the gas inlet nozzle is spring-loaded against this nozzle tip cone and the nozzle tip cone accordingly against the nozzle insert, so that metal penetration from the reactor in the area of the gas inlet nozzle is avoided.
  • the gas inlet nozzle is secured against the purge gas supply by a screw device, using a seal between the nozzle screw part and the purge gas nozzle. It has been found that the rotating movement of the nozzle screw part on the seal between the nozzle screw part and the purge gas nozzle has an adverse effect on their sealing effect. In view of the fact that the vortex tank reactor is intended for the removal of hydrogen and alkaline earth metals from molten aluminum and for this purpose active gases such as chlorine gas or the like are used, it was imperative that a leak-free design of the purge gas supply system was developed.
  • EP-A-169 290 also describes a nozzle device for use in a vortex tank reactor of the type described above.
  • the gas nozzle system comprises a nozzle insert which is attached to the reactor wall of the vortex tank reactor and is flush with the inner wall boundary.
  • the nozzle insert is provided with a receiving surface which is designed to accommodate a nozzle tip cone made of ceramic or similar material.
  • the purging gas nozzle is pressed against the nozzle tip cone with a corresponding force in order to avoid a seal between the tip and the tip cone and thus a metal passage from the reactor in the region of the purging gas nozzles.
  • the purging gas nozzle is secured to the purging gas supply line by a nozzle screw connection which contains a nozzle tip screw which receives the nozzle body.
  • the nozzle tip screw non-rotatably holds a mounting plate that presses against a seal located between the mounting plate and the rear end of the nozzle body.
  • a thread is screwed into the nozzle tip screw and supports the mounting plate against the seal and further against the nozzle body in order to achieve a leak-free seal.
  • a spring washer can be placed between the mounting plate and the thread to help support the mounting plate.

  • Advantageous further developments of the device according to the invention are characterized by the features of claims 2 and 3.

  • the inner wall 18 is provided with a number of openings 24 which are each intended to receive a nozzle device according to the present invention.
