Definitions

  • the present invention relates to the general field of feeding paper to a printer and more particularly, a device facilitating the feeding of paper onto a rotating cylindrical platen of a printer.
  • Document DE-U-1 838 735 describes a device in which the roller-carrying cradle is maneuvered by means of a lever the free end of which rests on the lower part of the cradle.
  • the free end of the lever When the free end of the lever is lowered, the cradle pivots down around the axis of the front rollers, which has the effect of moving the rear rollers away from the plate. If the free end of the lever is lowered further, it is the front rollers which move away from the plate because the cradle then pivots around its edge which has come into contact with the plate or the sheet of paper surrounding it. . It is then possible to adjust the position of the paper which is slightly held by the front edge of the cradle.
  • the lower part of the cradle is provided with two ears having curved notches which engage on a guide rod.
  • the notches and the rod cooperate to guide the cradle during its movements and, in particular, to ensure the passage of the axis of rotation of the cradle, from the axis of the front rollers to the line of contact between the plate and the front edge of the cradle.
  • the purpose of the device of the present invention is to facilitate the feeding of paper onto a rotating cylindrical printer stage and to reduce the cost of mounting the printers.
  • the device according to the invention is of the type described in document DE-C-957664, namely that it comprises at least one cradle mounted for rotation relative to the plate around an axis parallel to the axis of the latter, at least a yoke integral with the cradle to allow rotation of the latter in a first and second direction and first and second drive means carried by the cradle to come to rest the paper on the plate during the rotation of the cradle.
  • the device according to the invention is characterized in that the axis of rotation of the cradle is fixed, the rotation of the cradle is controlled by means of said yoke, which is rotatably mounted on said axis, the first and second means d 'drive being located on either side of the plane joining the axes of rotation of the plate and the cradle and selectively coming to bear on the paper during said rotation of the cradle.
  • a paper alignment element movable relative to the plate and carried by the cradle, is recalled in contact with the plate independently of the angular position of the cradle.
  • the rotation of the cradle and the distance of the alignment element relative to the plate are controlled by a common element acting on said yoke and on an extension of the alignment element.
  • the device used to supply paper to the platen of a printer generally includes a paper guide element, a rear feed roller, a paper alignment element and a feed roller.
  • the front feed roller is the closest feed roller to the operator when looking at the printer.
  • the rear feed roller is sufficiently released from the platen to allow the introduction of the front edge of a sheet of paper between said rear feed roller and said platen.
  • the paper guide is placed in the path of the front edge of the sheet to guide it between the rear feed roller and the platen.
  • the paper alignment element is applied against the platen and must come into contact with the front edge of the sheet when the latter is introduced into the printer in order to ensure its alignment.
  • the rear feed roller After aligning the paper, the rear feed roller is drawn toward the platen to press the paper against it. Before the platen is rotated to supply the paper between the rear feed roller and the platen, the paper alignment element is released from the path of the latter. In addition, the front feed roller must be released from the platen to allow paper to pass through. Then the platen is rotated until the front edge of the sheet has passed the paper alignment member and the front feed roller. After which the front feed roller is driven towards the platen to apply the paper against it and ensure that it continues to feed or advance step by step.
  • Figure 1 shows the device 1 of the present invention.
  • Most of the device 1 consists of a molded cradle comprising the cradle itself 2 and two pairs of integral legs 3 and 4 which are identical. Each pair of legs is hereinafter referred to as “yoke”.
  • the yoke 3 is secured to the lower surface of the cradle 2 at its end 5 and the yoke 4 is secured to the lower surface of the cradle 2 at its end 6.
  • a single yoke is sufficient for the proper functioning of the device of the present invention, two are provided in order to reduce the risks of arcing of the device 1 on its rod or circular axis 41 (FIG. 3) during its rotation.
  • the yoke 3 comprises two legs 7 and 8 oriented downwards which define a circular passage 9 adjacent to the bottom of the cradle 2 and which ends in the diverging interior surfaces 10 and 11 of the legs 7 and 8.
  • the circular passage 9 is open on an arc slightly less than 180 °.
  • the device 1 is formed from a polymer which is flexible enough so that, depending on the opening of the passage 9, the legs 7 and 8 can be separated enough so that said device 1 can be fitted onto the axis 41 (FIG. 3) . When the device 1 is installed on the axis 41, the latter is housed in the passage 9. The device 1 is held on the axis 41 by the closed part of the circular passage 9.
  • the outer surfaces 12 and 13 of the legs 7 and 8 converge towards the ends 14 and 15 which themselves converge towards one another.
  • the inner surfaces 18 and 19 of the ends of the legs 7 and 8 cooperate with a means of tilting or driving in rotation of the device 1 on the axis 41 as will be described later.
  • the cradle 2 has three openings 20, 21 and 22.
  • the opening 20 receives the rear feed roller 23, the opening 21 receives the paper alignment element 45 (FIG. 2) and the opening 22 receives the front feed roller 24.
  • the front feed roller rotates on an axis 25 mounted in the yokes 3 and 4 under the cradle 2.
  • the rear feed roller 23 rotates on an axis 44 (FIG. 4) mounted in the part upper of the yokes 3 and 4 under the cradle 2.
  • Part of the opening 20 is mena gée in the curved part of the cradle 2 and the other part, in an angularly offset lip 26 extending the front side of the curved part and integral with it.
  • the lip 26 acts as a paper guide as will be described later.
  • the lip 26 has ends 27 and 28 in the extension of the ends 5 and 6 of the cradle 2.
  • the front edge 29 of the lip 26 comprises, midway between its ends 27 and 28, a lug 30 projecting obliquely downward relative to the lower surface of the lip 26.
  • the lug 30 carries a pivot axis 31 on which is mounted a reference 32 of the paper alignment element.
  • This reference 32 has a leg 33 oriented downwards which includes a reinforcement 34 holding a flexible blade 35.
  • the legs 7 and 8 of the yoke 3 descend lower than the leg 33.
  • the reference 32 is recalled clockwise (on Figure 1) by a spring 36 which is fixed under the cradle 2 and to the reference 32 below the axis 31.
  • the flexible blade 35 has a staircase extension 37 which is part of the alignment assembly of the paper 45 Referring more particularly to FIG. 2, it can be seen that the end 38 of the extension 37 comprises an integral block 39 having a stop surface 40 and a contact edge 46.
  • the contact edge 46 is intended to come apply against the plate 42 ( Figure 4) to stop a sheet of paper during its introduction and allow its alignment.
  • the structure described above is produced in the form of a module which can be used alone or in combination with other identical modules to supply paper to a printer platen.
  • FIG. 3 represents a certain number of modules of the type described above mounted for rotation on the axis 41 which is mounted in the chassis of a printer (not shown), parallel to the plate 42 and below it.
  • the plate 42 is arranged in the cradle 2 while being slightly separated from the latter.
  • the only part of this device which can be in contact with the plate 42 is the alignment element of the paper 45. This is the so-called "release position which will be described later.
  • the device 1 can be tilted to cause the roll 23 or the roll 24 to be applied against the plate 42 but no part of the cradle 2 will be in contact with the plate 42.
  • Each module or device 1 mounted on the axis 41 is tilted around it relative to the plate 42, by a comb 50 formed by a rotary rod 51 carried by the chassis of the printer.
  • This rod 51 has a longitudinal groove 52 in which is mounted a flexible blade in which teeth 53 to 58 have been cut to form the teeth of the comb 50.
  • the teeth 53 to 55 form a first group while the teeth 56 to 58 form a second group.
  • the outer teeth 53 and 55 of the first group and the teeth 56 and 58 of the second group cooperate with the yokes 3 and 4 of each device 1 illustrated.
  • the intermediate teeth 54 and 57 of each group cooperate with the legs 33 of each device 1 shown.
  • a sheet of paper 60 is wound on the plate 42 between the device 1 and the plate 42.
  • the front edge 61 of the sheet 60 passes under a paperweight rod 62.
  • the paperweight rod 62 is loaded by a spring and applies the front edge 61 of the sheet against the plate 42.
  • FIG. 4 When a new sheet of paper 60 is to be loaded into a printer for its printing, the operator must introduce the front edge 65 of the paper 60 into the printer through the rear of the plate 42.
  • the front edge 65 comes into contact with the paper guide lip 26 and when the operator applies a downward-directed force to the paper 60, the front edge 61 tends to curve towards the passage defined by the rear feed roller 23 and the plate 42.
  • the paper guide 26 is disposed on the path of the front edge 65 to guide the sheet 60 between the rear feed roller 23 and the plate 42.
  • the rear feed roller 23 must be far enough from the plate 42 to allow the paper to pass between the roller 23 and the plate 42.
  • the upper edge of the paper alignment element 45 is in contact with the plate 42 to prevent the passage of paper between the plate 42 and the cradle 2.
  • paper 60 in the printer causes the application of the front edge 65 against the stop surface 40 of the element 45 which is used by the operator to align the paper 60.
  • the positions of the roller 23 and the elements of alignment 45 with respect to the plate 42 are determined by the position of the comb 50 which has been driven in rotation towards the front, that is to say counterclockwise, in FIG. 4.
  • the tooth 53 rests on the surface 19 and thus recalls the device 1 in the position shown in FIG. 4 and the alignment element 45 is brought back into contact with the plate by the spring 36.
  • the rear feed roller 23 must be driven towards the plate 42 to cause the application of the paper 60 against it.
  • the paper alignment element 45 must be released from the path of the front edge 65.
  • the front feed roller 24 must be released from the plate 42 to allow the passage of the paper 60 around the plate 42.
  • the comb 50 by turning on a first arc in the direction clockwise to the position of FIG. 5, allows the front feed roller 24 to be moved away from the plate 42.
  • the rotation of the comb 50 on a second arc in the opposite direction causes the surface 18 of the leg 7 to be stressed by the blade 53, the device 1 then rotating counterclockwise, which releases the roller 24 from the plate 42 and causes the application of paper 60 against the plate 42 by the roller 23.
  • the rotation of the comb 50 on a third arc always clockwise, causes the surface 66 of the return of the alignment element 32 to be biased by the blade 54 and the alignment element 45 to be released from the plate 42 as seen in Figure 6.
  • the plate 42 is rotated until the front edge of the sheet is driven beyond the alignment element of the paper and the front feed roller 24.
  • the front feed roller 24 must be fed to the p Latin 42 for applying the paper 60 against the plate 42 in order to allow a continuous or step-by-step feeding of the paper 60.
  • the comb 50 is driven in rotation forward or counterclockwise on a first arc to cause the release of the blade 54 from the surface 66.
  • the alignment element 45 is restored by the spring 36 and presses the paper 60 onto the plate 42.
  • the alignment element 45 blocking the paper 60, the latter is kept in the aligned position during the movement of the roller 23 which emerges from the plate 42.
  • the forward rotation of the comb 50 on a second arc towards the position of FIG. 5, allows the roller 23 to be released from the plate 42.
  • the paper 60 is held in place by the alignment element 45.
  • Several devices 1 can be arranged side by side on the rod 41 to allow the use of plates of different lengths. For example, the distance separating the ends 5 and 6 being of the order of 6.25 cm, and a plate 42 of 33 cm being used, five devices 1 are sufficient to obtain the desired results. Each of the five devices 1 can be held on the rod 41 relative to the plate 42 by placing suitable spacers between the first and the last device 1 and the chassis of the printer.
  • the comb 50 has a sufficient number of groups of teeth or blades to cooperate with each device 1 which can be mounted on the rod 41, plates 42 of different lengths can be easily used by changing the number of devices 1 mounted on the rod 41
  • the characteristics sought in any paper feeding device of a printer are: regular feeding of the paper, the possibility of using a large number of sheets of carbon paper and the possibility of handling sheets of different widths. Since each of the devices 1 according to the invention is mounted independently on the rod 41 and is actuated by different groups of teeth of the comb 50, sheets of paper 60 of different widths can be applied uniformly against the plate 42. The only limit consists of the maximum arc of rotation of the comb 50.
  • the maximum arc of rotation of the device 1 in each direction is reached when there is no paper between the device 1 and the plate 42.
  • the comb 50 must be rotated on a sufficient arc so that each of its flexible teeth which stress the legs 7 and 8 of the yokes, can apply the paper 60 against the plate 42 with the desired force through the rollers 23 and 24. In this case and with a separation between the cradle 2 and the plate 42 sufficient to allow the passage of a maximum number of e sheets of carbon paper, a regular supply of paper is ensured.
  • the comb 50 is in the position taken following a paper release operation. After the sheet 60 has been printed, the comb 50 is tilted to the position shown. The sheet 60 is thus released from the plate 42, which allows it to be easily removed from the printer.
