Description

Aug. 14, 1934. H. A. AVERY TYPEWRITING MACHINE Filed Jan. 15, 1952 Ihwentor HENRY A. AVERY (Ittoniegs Patented Aug. 14, 1934 'TYPEWRITING MACHINE Henry Allen Avery, Groton, N. Y.,. assignor to L. C Smith & Corona. Typewriters Inc.I New York, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application January 15, 1932, Serial No. 586,725 4 Claims (01. 191-121) This invention relates to improvements in typewriting machines and more particularly to improvements in paper feeding and guiding means for said machines.
The invention provides a highly efficient paper feeding and guiding means the parts of which are of light weight, very compactly arranged and ofexceptionally small number, thus affording a paper feeding and guiding means especially suit- 10 able for small portable typewriting machines.
The invention also providesa paper feeding and guiding means wherein a paper guiding table and a plurality of feed rolls are yieldably urged toward the platen and are shifted. from the platen 15 to release the paper by an'exoeedingly simple means correlated therewith to act thereon in a manner insuring highly efficient paper feeding and paper releasing actions.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the following descriptionof the preferred embodiment of the invention illustrated-in the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing, 7 Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the platen carriage z of a typewriting machine provided with the improved paper feeding and guiding mechanism; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view on theline 2-2 of Fig. 1, showing thefeed rolls engaged with the platen; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 33 showing the feed rolls and paper table re leased;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary bottom plan view showing parts of the platen carriage and paper table; s and Fig. is a fragmentary perspective view of the paper feeding and guiding means inverted to clearly show certain features of construction thereof.
The parts of the improved paper feeding and guiding means are shown mounted on the platen carriage of a portable typewriting machine, the platen roller 10 having its shaft 11 journalled in bearings 12 on the end plates 13 of the platen carriage, which end plates are connected by the base plate 14 of the carriage. The platen roll is rotatable by the usual finger wheels 15 on the platen shaft, or by the usual line spacing mechanism which includes a ratchet wheel 16 held to one end of the platen roll.
' A sheet metal paper supporting and guiding table 1'7 extends under the platen roll between the carriage and plates and between the platen roll and the carriage base plate, said table being curved or bowed transversely of the platen with its concave face uppermost or nearest the platen. In the front-edge of table 17 there is a long; shallow recess or notch 18, the ends of which are.
located equidistant. from the table ends, and
the rear longitudinal edgeof which is preferably. formed witha short pendent lip or flange 19. A long front feed roller 20 fixed on a front feed roll shaft 21 is located in this recess 18, the ends I the ends of shaft 21 and the ends of roller 20 bing equidistant from the respective ends of the table, so that the front roll centered longitu dinally of the table which, in turn, is similarly 7 centered relatively to the platen longitudinally of the platenas hereinafter described. The open throats of the hook bearings 22 face toward the paper table.
A rear feed roll shaft 24, longer than shaft 21 extends longitudinally of the table 17 at the convex or under face, of the table and has its ends journalled in the slightly'pendenthooklike ends 25 of two bearing lugs '26 formed on the table at the outerends of the forward edges of two relatively short longitudinal slots 2'1 in the table. The open throats of hook bearings 25 face toward the convex face of the'table. Two short rear feed rollers 28 are fixed on shaft 24 and project through the short slots 27 be- 9 yond the opposite or concaveface of the table a substantial distance to the rear of the. front feed.roller. Slots 27-and rollers 28 are equal distances from the respective ends of the paper table,v shaft 24 and its bearings being centered longitudinally of the table with the rollers 28. equidistant from thefshaft endsand each cross-, ing the vertical fore and aft or transverse plane of a different end of the longitudinally centered front feed roller 20. ment of three. feed rolls (a forward and two rear rolls) is effective to feed the paper smoothly and in a straight path. i i n The table is normally supported or held up to yieldably hold the feed rollers against the platen roller, or against paper fed between the platen roller and said rollers, at one point only, as hereinafter described, the table supporting means loosely engaging or merely abutting the table at the convexface of the table. The table,
This staggeredv arrange m0 thus loosely supported at one point only, is maintained in longitudinally centered relation with the platen roller, i. e. with its ends equidistant from the ends of the platen roller, by a pair of positioning pins or studs 29 depending from the table and of sufficient length and diameter to always extend loosely (with a smallradial' clearance) through a pair of holes 30in the base plate platenroller at the rear of the carriage, paper table, and platen roller. Shaft 31 has a reduced inner end 34 journalled in a bracket 32 held to the carriagebase plate to the left of the middle of the carriage, andsaid shaft extends to the right hand end plate of the carriage where its outer endis journalled on the inner end of a pivot screw 33 tapped through said plate. A forwardly extending rock arm'35 fixed on shaft 31 is located in the medial fore and aft vertical plane of the platen roller andpaper table and is bent to clear the table in all vertically shifted positions of the table except at its forward end or tip which is adapted to loosely abut or contact the under or convex face of the table at a point in said medial plane midway between the front and rear feed rolls or equidistant from said shafts and the axes of the front and rear feed rollers.
'At its outer or right hand end, at the inner face of the .right hand end plate of the carriage,-the rock shaft 31 has fixed thereon a rock arm 36 extending forwardly between the platen shaft 11 and base plate 14 of the platen carriage and normally held yieldably drawn or rocked upward by a coil spring 37 to thereby hold arm 35 rocked upward in a position in which it holds the table17 lifted a substantial distance'from the base plate 14 to press the feed rolls against the platen'roller', or against paper interposed between the platen roller on the one hand and the feed rollers and paper table on the other hand, this position of the parts being shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 5. Spring 37 is connected at its lower end to the forward end of rock arm 36 and'extends upwardin 1mm of the platen shaft'to an anchor stud or pin 38 projecting inward from the right hand end plate of the carriage. v
It will be observed that the system of feed muers engages the platen roller equally at both sides ment at a single point located centrally ofthe feed roller system and midway the ends of the platen roller and paper table, at the intersection of planes A-A and B-B, by the front end edgeof arm 35 which urges the feed rollers'equally to the platen roller by pressure transmitted to the table at said point from the single 'spring' '37.
This method of table and feed roller support together with the loose fit of the positioning pins 29 in holes 30 permits a limited universal tilting of the table to compensate for slight inequalities in the platen and feed rollers and the paper and insures straight feeding of the paper at an even rate.
The table and feed rollers may be lowered to the-paper-releasing or feed-roll cast-ofl-position I shownin Fig. 3 by "rocking shaft aragainst the pull of spring 37. For this purpose, and to lock the parts in cast-off position, a hand-operated release lever 39 of bellcrank form is pivoted at the inner face of the right hand end plate 13 of the carriage on a pivot 40 mounted on said plate for fore and aft swinging of the upstanding handle arm of the release lever. The other arm of the bellcrank hand lever carries at its end a laterally projecting pin or stud 41 which works in a recess 42 in the'upper edge of rock arm 36, and normally engages the rearwardly facing front end wall of said recess and is slightly out of contact with the-bott'om'or' upwardly facing wall of said recess whenthe feed rolls contact the platen, as shown in Fig; 2. The recess is of such length and depth that when the handle arm of level 39 is drawn forward to swingthe normally forwardly. extending stud-carrying arm downward,tarm 36 is depressed 'tojdepress arm'35 sufflciently toallow the table 1'7 to seat on the 'carriagebase plate 14- (aii'ording maximum feedroll clearance from the platen in cast-off position), and stud '41 engages the forwardly'facing rear end wallv of the recess 42 with the engaged lever and arm parts in dead. center relation to lock the parts in paper-releasing or feed-roll cast-oil position, as shown in'Fig. 3.
A suitable letter space scale 43 isheld by screws 11 44 to pendent lugs 45 atthefront edgeofpaper tablel'l. 3,
