v The line space lever 14 has a yoke-like fulcrum portion 29, the horizontal lsuperposed arms of which are pivotally and slidably mounted on a vertical post 30 held in superposed ears 31 and V32 of a sheet metal bracket 33 which is fastened to the outer face of end plate 16 by screws 34. A spring 35 connects yoke 29 oflever 14 with bracket 33 and tends to swing the forwardly extending handle portion of the lever to the left into the position shown in Fig. 1 and draw the yoke portion of the lever down the post to different levels determined by the setting of the line space regulating lever 36. This lever 36 is pivoted on end plate 16 at 37 and has a rearwardly extending handle and locking arm which is laterally springy and carries a locking stud 38 adapted to be engaged in either of two apertures 39 and 40, as shown in Figs. 2 and 7, to position the forward stoparm of the lever at different levels under the upper arm of the line space lever yoke.

The foregoing parts are all constructed substantially as in the Corona machine above referred to, and said machine isprovided with a paper feed mechanism for feeding and guiding the work pieces downwardly behind the platen, under the platen, and up in front of the platen behind member 46 which then directs the/paper upwardly and rearwardly over the upper front portion of the platen. The paper feeding and guiding means just referred to is constructed substantially .as
shown in the patent to Armstrong, No. 1,619,-
013, dated March 1, 1927, but it will be obvious that any other suitable feeding and guiding means may be employed.
In said patent a paper retaining bail device is shown, and the objects of the present invention include the provision of an improved paper bail mechanism whereby the insertion of sheets in the machine and making of erasures are facilitated, improved means for holding the bail in on and off positions, simple and eliicient means for limiting the throw of the bail in both directions, and means whereby the bail will be restored, if left accidentally in off position, by the operation of the carriage returning and linespacing lever, such o eration of the lever being almost invaria ly performed before starting of writing on an inserted sheet. It is, of course, impossible for the operator to type to any great extent after any throw-off of the bail without actuating the line spacing mechanism, so that by the arrangement set forth the bail will be restored before or shortly after starting of typing. lThe improvements as shown associated with the foregoing described parts of the vCorona machine will now be described.
The paper bail is preferably formed .of a single piece of sheet metal, as shown, and con-` sists of a combined letter-space scale and paper-holding and guiding cross-bar 54, and a pair of side arms 55 and 56 having aligned bearing holes 57 for the shoulder portionsand pivot screws 58 hold the arms to the end plates 15 and 16, of the carriage at the inner faces of the end plates for swinging move-`A ments of the bail about an axis which is par,- allel with the axis of the' platen and preferably, asshown, is below the level of the printing line and slightly. above the level of the axis of the platen. Side arm 56 is formed with an integral extension 59 at the opposite side of its pivot hole from the cross-bar 54, and said extension 59 is provided at its forward edge at its lower end with an inwardly projecting integral lug 60 preferably having an open slot 61 extending 'upward' from its llower edge, as shown. The lever is thus held by the side walls of slot 61 and by the opposed portions of hub 27 and boss 17 against lateral movement and accidental disconnection from the-bail. lThe' arrangement just described affords a simple, economical and efficient 'mounting of the lever and shifting contact connection between the lever and bail.
Lever 64 is preferably provided with a. combined bail stop and spring anchor lug 65 which extends upward from the upper edge of said lever about\midway its ends intermediate the vertical planes of the lever and bail axes. The described arrangement is such that force transmitted from the spring to the downward bail extension is exerted in a direction tending to urge the crossbar of the bail toward the platen `while the bail is in on7 position, and is exerted in a direction tending to urge the crossbar of the bail away from the platen while the bail is in olf position, the change indirection of force taking place approximately as the contact edge of lug passes under the bail'axis. Spring 63 exerts force directly on the bail at its upper end tending to urgeA the crossbar of the bail toward the platen while the bail is in on position, and, preferably, stop is so located as shown) that the direct application of force by the spring to thebail is,
always exerted in said direction, the opposing directly applied'and indirectly applied spring forces neutralizing each other in the pif position of the bail. This arrangement affords a compact structure giving amplev access to the work for making erasures, easy worlc introduction, and a yielding lock-off ofthe bail, without an excessive swinging of the bail carrying @the crossbar into the path of the type bar hea-ds which would be liable to result in injury to the type faces and bar if keys are struck while the bail is in off position.l
The opposed spring forces and the friction between the lug 60 and lever 64 yieldably hold or lock the bail in off position. Preferably, however, the upper edge of the lever is formed with a cam hump 67 immediately s forward.` of lug 65 forming a.' locking notch adapted to Yreceive the lug 60 when the bail is rocked to voif position. The forward edge of lug 65 forms an abrupt rear wall of said notch engageable by the rear. face of lug 60 to positively arrest throw-off movement of the bail, while the rear slope of the cam hump 67 forms a sloping cam forward wall of the.

The high point-of cam 67 is preferably located under the bail axis at the point where the direction of spring force transmitted to the bail bythe lever changes, as shown. The
' cam hump also preferably terminates materially short of the limit of outward movement of lug 60 along the lever 64, and the outer upper edge portion' ofthe lever and thebottont of the locking notch in both extreme positi ns of the bail preferably lie in the arc of av'gclestruck from the bail axis, as shown. Th described arrangement per, mits relatively easy yielding movement of the bail bar away from the platen through alim-l ited range to better accommodate varying numbers of superposed work sheets and gives a quick impulse to the bail in restoring direction from the cam as soon as the direction of force from the lever to the bail is changed by a manual rearward thrust on the crossbar. The rear cam edge of the hump 67 also acts to urge lug 60 against stop lug 65 in throwoff 'operations of the bail. y
The action of the line-space mechanism to restore the bail if th@ bail be inadvertently left in off position will now be described, with particular reference to Figs. 1, 2 and 7. From the description of the line-.spacemechanism heretofore given, it will be seen that the rigid pawl 41 on the operatin stroke of lever 14 swings rearward and sli es sli Yhtly upward respectively about and along earing post 30 of the lever and always moves to the same position irrespective of the setting of the regulator 36, the final position of the parts at the end of a li-ne spacing and cary riage returning stroke of the 'lever bein shown in Fig. 2. When the bail is in olf position side arm 55 thereof has an upstanding forward edge portion 55b extending upward across the path .of movement of pawl 41 in all settings of the regular-well forward of the limit of rearward movement of the rear edge of the pawl, vas shown in Fig. 7. When lever 14 is swung toward the right on its operating stroke pawl 41 engages edge 55b Cof bail side arm 55 and rocks the bail to the position shown in Fig. 2, fully releasing the bail by moving lug 6() forward past the apex of cam hump 67 vso that the bail will snap to full on position under the action of spring 63.

A typewriting machine as claimed in claim 12, wherein said spring is connected at its opposite ends with the bail and arm, the points of connection being located to afford a direct pull of the spring on the bail throughout the limits of bail throw in a direction urging the bail toward paper guiding position.

A typewriting machine as claimed in claim 12, wherein the arm surface. over which said bail-carried meanstravels'has a cam hump intermediate its ends extending nearer the bail axis than the end portions of said surface and on the high point of which said bail-carried means is engaged in the dead ceni' ter relation of the bail and afm.

A typewriting machine as claimed in claim 12, whereinmean's are provided for positively `\limitin0r movement of the bail toward `ypalpe'r guiding position, and the arm surface'ulpon which said'baiLcarried means travels has' an intermediate portion rising toward the bail axis and end portions, that end portion of the arm surface engaged by said means in the paper guiding position of the bail being concentric with the bail axis when the bail is in guiding position andthe 'hump being located to permit a limited travel of the bail-carried means over said concentric surface portion before the bailreaches the maximum limit of itsv movement toward paper guiding position.
16. A typewriting machine as claimed in claim 12, wherein the spring isa helical tension spring connected at its opposite ends to the arm and bail, the connection to the arm axis and the bail-carried means engaging portion of the arm, and said points of connection being so located that thearrest of the swinging of the bail away from paper guiding position occurs before the spring reaches the axial line about which the bail swings.
17. A typewriting machine as claimed in claim 12, wherein the spring is a helical tension spring connected at one end with the bail at,the\crossbar side of the` bail axis and connected at itsroppositc end with the arm at a point between the axes of the arm and bail and close to the bail axis, and wherein said means for automatically arresting swinging of the bail away from paper guiding position arrests the bail before the spring reaches the axial line'about which the bail swings.
18. In a typewriting machine, the com bination with a platen and a manually shiftable paper-retaining bail pivotally mounted to swing about a fixed axis parallel with the platen between on and off positions, of means for yieldably holding the bail in both of said positions comprising an arm pivotally mounted to swing about an axis parallel with the bail axis and a helical tension spring anchored at its opposite rends to the bail and arml to directly exert a constant pull on said bail in a direction urging the bail toward on position, said bail having 'a portion against which 'said arm is yieldably ressed by said spring and shiftable longitu inally f the arm, during movement of the bail from on to off position, from' a point at claim 18, whereinmeans are provided for positively limiting the throw of vthe bail,
and the spring is anchored to the bail at the side of the bail axis at which the bail crossbar is located and anchored to the arm at a point to extend between the axes of the bail and arm in all ositions of the bail, the bail portion engage by the arm. being/located at the opposite side of the bail axis from that at which the spring is anchored to 1thebail.
