- the known protection devices consist of a ring formed of several segments fixed on the end of the shell of the oven and cooled by air circulation. This ring is brought to very high temperatures and, if the treated products are abrasive, subjected to significant wear. Its lifespan is therefore relatively short and the segments which constitute it must be replaced frequently. Since these segments are fairly complex parts, generally made of cast steel, their replacement is costly. In addition, certain types of attachment make disassembly of worn or damaged segments very difficult.

- the protective device which is the subject of the invention is characterized in that it consists of a refractory concrete ring which covers the internal surface of the end of the furnace shell and the front face of a flange forming part of a metal support fixed on the end of the furnace shell, this ring being attached to said support by anchoring elements fixed on the latter.
- the part of the shell covered by the concrete ring is limited, towards the interior of the furnace, by an annular stop, welded on the ferrule and serving as a stop for the briquetting of the furnace so as to eliminate parasitic thrusts on the 'ring.
- the connections between the anchoring elements and the ferrule or the flange have a certain clearance allowing the differential expansions of the ring, the ferrule and the flange; expansion joints are provided on the ring.
- a belt attached to the outer edge of the flange serves as a peripheral support for the ring.

- the outer part of the ring is formed from precast concrete blocks 44. These blocks are molded on a support to which they are attached by anchoring elements 38 mounted with play on this support.
- This support is formed of three welded parts: a cylindrical part 48 whose end rests on the shell 16 of the furnace and which is provided with lugs 49 fixed on this shell by means of pins 50 and keys 52, a part 54 arranged perpendicular to the part 48 and having the shape of a ring segment and a part 56 of cylindrical shape welded to the edge of the part 54, perpendicular to the latter.
- the pieces 54 form an outer flange whose plane is perpendicular to the axis of the furnace and the pieces 56 form a belt extending on either side of the flange.
- the rear part of this belt surrounds the adjacent end of the ferrule 24 with slight play.
- the end of the ferrule 22 is spaced from the flange so as to establish communication between the two annular section passages 30 and 32 formed by the ferrules 16, 22 and 24. Fresh air supplied by the external passage 30 can so come and lick the flange then the ferrule 16. to cool them.
