;s und mit Hilfe eines Reduktionsmittels zum katalytisch aktiven Metall reduziert wird. Zur Herstellung eines
geeigneten Trägermaterials werden bei diesem bekannten Verfahren Rußkügelchen mit einer Lösung eines
speziellen polymeren Furfurylalkohol versetzt, das erhaltene Gemisch wird extrudiert und das Extrudat bei
einer Temperatur von 600° C karbonisiert. Nach dem Einbringen in eine Rhodiumsalzlösung und entsprechender
Reduktion zum katalytisch aktiven Rhodiummetall enthält der Katalysator etwa 6% Rhodium.
■«■> Der Erfindung Hegt die Aufgabe zugrunde, das Verfahren gemäß dem Oberbegriff des Anspruchs 1 so auszubilden,
daß der erhaltene Katalysator bei erheblich verringertem Metallgehalt eine gute Aktivität aufweist.
Diese Aufgabe wird durch das Verfahren des Anspruches 1 gelöst.

Bei Verwendung von Polytetrafluorethylen als dem fluorhaltigen polymeren Bindemittel mit einem mittleren
Teilchendurchmesser von 30 bis 40 μίτι in einer Menge von 25 bis 35 Gew.-%, bezogen auf das Gemisch aus
■ls Polytetrafluoräthylen und Aktivkohle, und Vermischung unter Anwendung von Scherkräften, bildet das PoIytetrafluoräthylen
eine fadenartige, die Aktivkohleteilchen umschließende Faserstruktur. Der so erhaltene Katalysator
ist eine einheitliche, schwammartige Masse, die frei von erheblichen Anteilen an freien Aktivkohle- oder
Polytetrafluoräthylen-Teilchen ist und sich Insbesondere als Elektrodenbelag für Metall/Wasserstoff-Zellen
eignet.
-in Dieser Katalysator weist für verschiedene Hydrierungsreaktionen eine gute Aktivität auf, wobei gegenüber
bekannten Katalysatoren der Metallgehalt sehr gering 1st; beispielsweise enthält der Katalysator nur etwa
0,1 mg/cm2 Palladium.
Mit dem gemäß der Erfindung erhaltenen Katalysator wird beispielsweise eine effiziente, wiederaufladbare
elektrochemische Metall/Wasserstoff-Zelle, die über lange Zeit abwechselnd entladen und wieder aufgeladen
■ werden kann, erhalten. Darüber hinaus ist der so erhaltene Katalysator für eine Reihe anderer Anwendungen,
Insbesondere für Umsetzungen verschiedenster organischer Verbindungen mit Wasserstoff geeignet, so für die
Hydrierung von Aceton und Methyläthylketon zu den entsprechenden Alkoholen, für die Hydrierung von
Aldehyden, aliphatischen und aromatischen Nitroverbindungen und Kohlenstoffdoppelbindungen, sowie für die
Oxidation von Formaldehyd und Ameisensäure.
so Durch das erfindungsgemäße Verfahren erhält man einen verhältnismäßig billigen Katalysator, der dauerhaft,
effizient und leicht herstellbar 1st.
Das Vermischen von Trägermaterial, Aktivkohle und Bindemittel Polytetrafluoräthylen kann auf beliebige
Welse erfolgen, vorzugsweise jedoch mechanisch zu einem praktisch homogenen Gemisch. Danach kann dieses
Gemisch unter Druck, d. h. unter Anwesenheit von Scherkräften, welter gemischt werden, indem man es
s5 beispielsweise durch einen Bandmischer und Mikropulverisator führt, so daß man ein Im wesentlichen homogenes
poröses Gemisch erhält. Das so erhaltene Gemisch geht durch ein Sieb mit einer lichten Maschenweite von
0,3 mm hindurch.
Die Katalysierung erfolgt durch Einbringen eines Salzes eines der im Patentanspruch genannten Metalle der
achten Gruppe, vorzugsweise Rhodium, Ruthenium, Palladium oder Platin, Insbesondere Palladiumnitrat,
mi Rhodiumnitrat, Kaliumhexachlorplatlnat, Rhodiumsulfat oder Ruthenlumchlorid In die Poren des Trägermaterlals.

In dem das Salz Ionisierbar ist, eingebracht werden. Beispielswelse kann Aceton mit Palladiumnitrat
und 1,3-Dloxan und Chloroform können mit Platln(IV)tetrachlorld verwendet werden.
''5 Die Katalyse wird beendet, indem man das in dieser Weise eingeführte Salz mit einem bestimmten Reduktionsmittel
dafür reduziert. Ein bevorzugtes Reduktionsmittel 1st Hydrazin. Auch Natrlum-bls-(2-methoxyäthoxy)-alumlnlumhydrld
Ist ein bevorzugtes Reduktionsmittel. Die Einführung des Reduktionsmittels erfordert
normalerweise die Verwendung eines Trägers dafür. Beispielswelse kann eine wäßrlg-alkallsche Lösung (pH 9
bis 10), die etwa 10 Gew.-% Hydrazin enthält, in die Poren des Kohlenstoffs in dem Gemisch eingebracht
werden, wodurch das Salz innerhalb der Poren zu dem gewünschten Metall katalysator reduTjert wird. Die
verwendete Menge an Reduktionsmittel muß ausreichend sein, um das Salz in den Poren des Trägermaterials
vollständig zu reduzieren.
Nach Beendigung der Reduktion des Salzes werden andere Reaktionsprodukte als das katalytische Metall aus
den Poren des Gemisches entfernt, beispielsweise indem man das Gemisch mit Wasser wäscht oder durch
Extraktion, vorzugsweise mit einem mit Wasser mischbaren Lösungsmittel, wie Aceton. Nach Beendigung des
Waschens zur Entfernung von Alkali, Wasser, nlcht-umgesetztem Hydrazin oder sonstigem Reduktionsmittel
wird das Gemisch 30 Minuten lang bei etwa 100° C getrocknet und dann bei etwa 360° C etwa 30 Minuten lang
gesintert.
Entweder vor oder nach der Katalyse kann das poröse Gemisch in eine geeignete Form, die von seiner Letztverwendung
abhängt, gebracht werden. Beispielsweise kann das Gemisch kalt zu einer Folie mit einer mittleren
Dicke von etwa 0,4 mm und einem Gewicht von etwa 180 mg/cm2 verpreßt werden. Dann kann es auf ein
flaches leitendes Metallgitter, wie ein expandiertes Nickelsieb, das zuvor mit einem Überzug aus einem
Fluoräthylenpolymer versehen ist, aufgeschichtet werden. Eine solche Aufschichtung kann bei erhöhter Temperatur
und unter erhöhtem Druck, beispielsweise bei etwa 350° C und unter einem Druck von 313 bar/cm2 für
eine ZeK von 2 Minuten erfolgen, wenn eine Anode für eine Metall/Wasserstoff-Zelle hergestellt werden soll.
Diese Anode hat einen Katalysatorgehalt von etwa 0,1 mg/cm2 Palladium (hergestellt aus Palladiumnitrat), die
verwendete feinteillge Aktivkohle als Trägermaterial hat Peaks der Porendurchmesser bei 4 nm, 20 nm und
600 nm, das Porenvolumen beträgt etwa 0,95 ml/g. Die Aktivität der Elektrode, ausgedrückt als Absorptionsvermögen
für Wasserstoff, ist etwa 4mal größer als diejenige einer Elektrode mit Platinoxid als Katalysator, die
9 mg Platin/cm2 enthält.
Nach dem Verfahren gemäß der Erfindung wurden unter Verwendung der in Tabelle I angegebenen Materialien
eine Anzahl Wasserstoffelektroden hergestellt:

Jede der Elektroden 1, 2, 3 und 4 wurde hergestellt, indem Bindemittel und Trägermaterial miteinander
vermischt wurden und das Gemisch dann durch einen Bandmischer und Mikropulverlsator geführt wurde, bis
eine praktisch homogenes poröses Produkt erhalten war. Dieses Gemisch wird im Falle der Elektrode 1 katalyslert,
bevor es zu einem selbsttragenden Körper verformt wird, während Im Falle der Elektroden 2, 3 und 4
vor der Katalyse ein selbsttragender Körper aus dem Gemisch hergestellt wird. Die Katalyse erfolgt durch
Einführen des Salzes In dem nicht-polaren Lösungsmittel in das Gemisch, Insbesondere in die Poren des selbsttragenden
Materials, wonach das Salz in die Poren durch Kontakt mit dem Reduktionsmittel zu dem gewünschten
Katalysator umgewandelt wird. In jedem Fall wird das Gemisch anschließend an die Katalyse mit Wasser
gewaschen und bei 100° C getrocknet.
Das katalysierte oder nicht-katalyslerte Gemisch wird dann kalt zu einer flachen Folie von etwa 0,5 mm

polymer versehen ist, aufgeschichtet. In jedem Fall erfolgt die Aufschichtung bei etwa 350° C und unter einem
Druck von etwa 333 bar/cm2 für 2 Minuten. Die Temperatur wird erforderlichenfalls auf die Sintertemperatur
des Bindemittels eingestellt, um dar erforderliche Sintern zu bewirken. Nach dem Kühlen wird die Katalyse
durchgeführt, sofern sie nicht bereits an dem Gemisch durchgeführt wurde. Die fertige Wasserstoffelektrode
wird in einer elektrochemischen Zelle getestet, wobei in jedem Fall eine Kathode aus einer gesinterten Silberplatte
verwendet wird. Der Elektrolyt ist eine Lösung von 35 Gew.-96 Kaliumhydroxid. Das Verhalten der vier
Elektroden ist in Tabelle Il zusammengestellt:

Jede der Elektroden 1 bis 4 arbeitet also zufriedenstellend bei ihrer Verwendung als Wasserstoffelektrode in
einer elektrochemischen Metall/Wasserstoff-Zelle. Die Konzentration an Katalysator liegt in jeder Wasserstoffelektrode
beträchtlich unter derjenigen herkömmlicher Wasserstoffelektroden. Außerdem haben die nach dem
Verfahren gemäß der Erfindung hergestellten Wasserstoffelektroden gegenüber herkömmlichen Wasserstoffelektroden
mit Edelmetallen als Katalysatoren eine höhere elektrische Aktivität und Haltbarkelt.
Beispiel II
Jede der Elektroden 1 bis 4 von Beispiel I eignete sich auch als Katalysator für die Hydrierung bestimmter
organischer Verbindungen. So wurden unter Verwendung der Katalysatoren von Beispiel I Aceton und Methyläthylketon
in die entsprechenden Alkohole übergeführt, während die Hydrierung von Acetaldehyd und Benzaldehyd
Äthylalkohol und Benzylalkohol ergab. Reduktionstests mit Allylalkohol und Maleinsäure zeigten, daß
gewisse Katalysatoren ziemlich aktiv hinsichtlich der Hydrierung der C=C-Doppelblndungen waren. Der Katalysator
4 war für diesen Zweck besonders aktiv. Der Katalysator 2 war außerordentlich aktiv bei der Hydrierung
von Nitrogruppen an aromatischen Ringen, d. h. bei der Reduktion allphatlscher Nitroverbindungen. Jede
Hydrierung (oder Reduktion) wurde nach dem folgenden allgemeinen Verfahren durchgeführt:
Die katalytlsche Wirkung der verschiedenen Katalysatoren wurde bestimmt, Indem man Ihr Reduktionsvermögen
durch Kontakt der organischen Verbindungen mit dem Katalysator in Gegenwart stöchlometrischer
Mengen an Wasserstoff testete. Die Reaktionen wurden in einem Druckreaktor durchgeführt.
Die Ergebnisse der Hydrierung sind für jeden Katalysator 1 bis 4 in Tabelle III zusammengestellt. Auch die
Bedingungen der Hydrierung, die Reaktionsprodukte und die geschätzten Ausbeuten sind In Tabelle III angegeben.

Die Ergebnisse der Tests zeigen, daß nach dem Verfahren gemäß der Erfindung hergestellte Katalysatoren
nicht nur als Wasserstoffelektroden für elektrochemische Zellen, sondern auch für viele verschiedene Hydrierungen,
einschließlich der Hydrierung von Ketonen, Aldehyden und bestimmten aromatischen und aliphatischen
Nitroverbindungen verwendbar sind.
Claims (2)
1. Verfahren zur Herstellung eines aus einem der Metalle Eisen, Kobalt, Nickel, Rhodium, Ruthenium,
Palladium oder Platin auf einem Trägermaterial bestehenden Katalysators für Hydrierungsreaktionen mit
einem Metallgehalt von wenigstens 0,1 mg/cm2, wobei in die Poren des Tragermaterials ein Salz dieser
Metalle in einem nicht-polaren Lösungsmittel, in dem das Salz ionisierbar Is1:, eingebracht und dort mittels
eines Reduktionsmittels zum katalytisch aktiven Metall reduziert wird, das Trägermaterial anschließend
gewaschen, getrocknet und gesintert wird, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß zur Bereitstellung des
Trägermaterials feinteilige Aktivkohle, die eine Oberfläche von 500 bis 600 rnVg und eine mittlere Porengröße
von 5 bis 10 μπι aufweisi, mit einem pulverförmigen Polytetrafluoräthylun, fluoriertem Äthylen/Propylen
oder Polyvinylidenfluorid, dessen mittlerer Teilchendurchmesser 30 bis 40 μπι beträgt, in einer Menge
von 10 bis 40 Gew.-%, bezogen auf das Gemisch aus Aktivkohle und Polytetrafluorethylen, fluoriertem Ethylen/Propylen
oder Polyvinylidenfluorid, unter Einwirkung von Scherkräften vermischt wird, so daß ein
homogenes poröses Gemisch erhalten wird.
2. Verwendung des nach Anspruch 1 erhaltenen Katalysators als Elektrodenbelag.
