Verfahren zur Herstellung von (Hydroxymethyl)-alkyl-,
-cycloalkyl- und -aralkylphosphinen
Die vorliegende Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von (Hydroxymethyl)-alkyl-, -cycloalkyl- oder -aralkylphosphinen
der allgemeinen Formel
(RR')nP(CH20H)3_n,
worin η = 1 und 2 sein kann und R bzw. RT gleiche oder verschiedene,
substituierte oder nichtsubstituierte Alkyl-, Cycloalkyl- oder Aralkylrest mit 1 bis 18, vorzugsweise
bis 4, insbesondere 1 oder 2 C-Atomen bedeuten.
Bekanntlich lassen sich (Hydroxymethyl)-alkylphosphine
durch Umsetzung-von primären und sekundären Phosphinen
mit Paraformaldehyd unter Druck im Autoklaven bei Temperaturen von 60 bis 90 C herstellen (E.I. Grinstein,
A.B. Bruker und L.Z. Soborovskii, Doklady Adk. USSR 139, 1359 (1961); SU-PS 138 617 (1960); Zh. Obshch. Khim.
36, (2) 302, 1966).
Diese Verfahrensweise besitzt mehrere Nachteile. Einmal tritt bei erhöhten Temperaturen und bei Druckerhöhung
die Buckler-Tripett-Umlagerung zu den isomeren Alkylphosphinoxiden verstärkt auf, die bei der erforderlichen
Aufarbeitung des Reaktionsproduktes durch Vakuumdestillation nicht vollständig abgetrennt werden
können (H. Hellmann, J. Bader, H. Birkner und 0. Schumacher, Lieb. Ann. 659, 49 (1962); S.A. Buckler,

J. Amer. Chem. Soc. 82, 4215 (i960). Außerdem stellt die
Druckreaktion wegen der extremen Giftigkeit der Alkylphosphine
und deren Brennbarkeit an Luft sowie wegen der aus Sicherheitsgründen begrenzten Ansatzmengen und dadurch
bedingten geringen Raum-Zeit-Ausbeuten ein in technischem Maßstab nur wenig geeignetes Verfahren dar.
Auch gemäß der US-PS 3 66O 495 werden Hydroxymehtylphosphine
durch Umsetzung von wässrigen Formaldehydlösungen mit Phosphorwasserstoff erhalten, wobei man jedoch, wenn
hohe Ausbeuten erzielt werden sollen, in Gegenwart von Tetrakis-(hydroxymethyl)-phosphoniumchlorid als Katalysator
und außerdem unter Druck arbeiten muß, was mit den oben bereits erwähnten Nachteilen verbunden ist.
Ein zusätzlich bei der Vervrondung wässriger Formaldehyd-Lösungen auftretender Nachteil ist die Bildung des jeweiligen
Hydroxymethylphosphinoxids, welches, wie aus der DT-OS 1 930 521 bekannt ist, bevorzugt unter Druck durch
Reaktion mit Wasser unter Formaldehyd-Katalyse gebildet wird.
Es wurde nun überraschenderweise gefunden, daß man die eingangs genannten (Hydroxymethyl)-alkyl,-cycloalkyl- oder
-aralkylphosphine in kontinuierlicher oder diskontinuierlicher Verfahrensweise drucklos, schnell und risikolos
in quantitativer Ausbeute und praktisch frei von Nebenprodukten erhält, wenn man die entsprechenden Mono- oder
Di-,-alkyl-,-cycloalkyl- oder -aralkylphosphine mit Formaldehyd, Paraformaldehyd oder Trioxan in Gegenwart von polaren
organischen Lösemitteln, die gegenüber dem Reaktionsprodukt inert sind, bei Atmosphärendruck und Temperaturen
unterhalb k00C umsetzt und das Lösemittel anschließend abtrennt

Zweckmäßigerweise verwendet man hierbei inerte Lösemittel mit einem Siedepunkt unter 120 C.
Als Lösemittel eignen sich Alkohole, Glykole, Äther, alkylierte Formamide, aliphatische oder aromatische Nitrile, halogenierte
aliphatische oder aromatische Kohlenwasserstoffe, cyclische und offenkettige Sulfone, Carbonsäureanhydride oder -ester, N-alkylierte
Carbonsäureamide, wie z.B. Methanol , Äthanol, Propanol,
Isopropanol, Chloroform, Methylenchlorid, Methyl- oder Äthylacetat oder Gemische aus diesen Lösemitteln.
Ferner hat sich gezeigt, daß sich die Reaktionszeiten wesentlich verkürzen lassen, wenn man zusätzlich einen
Katalysator verwendet. Katalysatormengen von 100 ppm bis 0,1 %, bezogen auf die Formaldehydmengen,sind in diesen
Fällen ausreichend.
Als Katalysatoren eignen- sich sowohl Metallsalze der zweiten oder achten Gruppe des Periodischen Systems der
Elemente als auch Phosphate, Phosphite, Hypophosphite oder Phosphoniumverbindungen des Typs (RpR-OP)X bzw.
(RR4P)X, wobei R und R' substituierte und nicht substituierte
organische Radikale und X = Cl, Br", J~, C]HUCOQ" oder HpPO^ bedeutet.
Von den genannten Metallsalzen werden insbesondere die des Plains , Rhodiums, Cadmiums oder Nickels, gegebenenfalls
in komplexer Form,und zwar vorzugsweise die Chloride,eingesetzt.
Es empfiehlt sich, daß man unter Schutzgasatmosphäre arbeitet, wobei als Schutzgas Stickstoff, Argon oder
Kohlendioxid dienen kann.
Kontinuierlich läßt sich das erfindungsgemäße Verfahren
am besten in einem Reaktor durchführen, der durch eine flussigkeitsdurchlassige Trennwand wie z.B. Filterplatte,

Fritte oder Diaphragma unterteilt und mit einer vorgelegten Lösung des herzustellenden (Hydroxymethyl)-phosphins
in dem organischen Lösemittel gefüllt ist.
Im ersten Teil des Reaktors wird dann in der genannten Lösung Paraformaldehyd suspendiert und unter intensivem
Rühren in diese Suspension gleichzeitig das jeweilige Mono- oder DL-,-alkyl-,-cycloalkyl- oder -aralkyl-phosphin,
Paraformaldehyd und Lösemittel kontinuierlich und in solchen Mengen eingetragen, die den neugebildeten Mengen an
(Hydroxymethyl)-pho.sphinlösung entsprechen, welche aus dem zweiten Teil des Reaktors ebenfalls kontinuierlich
abgezogen werden. Aus diesen Lösungen wird anschließend das Lösemittel abgetrennt und in den ersten Teil des Reaktors
zurückgeführt. Die Umsetzung wird vorzugsweise bei Temperaturen von 3o bis 35 C durchgeführt.
Das erfindungsgemäße Verfahren liefert je nach Ausführungsform bis zu 8o %ige Lösungen der (Hydroxymethyl)-alkyl-,
-cycloalkyl- oder -aralkylphosphine, die durch Entfernen des jeweiligen Lösemittels im Vakuum leicht in 1oo %iger
Form erhalten werden können.
Die Verwendung von Katalysatoren verkürzt die Reaktionszeiten bis zu 3o %.
Bei diskontinuierlicher Verfahrensweise wird Paraformaldehyd bzw. Formaldehyd oder Trioxan im organischen Lösemittel
vorgelegt und vorzugsweise unter Schutzgasatmosphäre und intensiver Durchmischung bei 3o bis 35°C das als Ausgangsprodukt
verwendete Phosphin eingeleitet. Flüssige Phosphine werden entweder verdünnt oder unverdünnt zugetropft oder bei
ausreichender Flüchtigkeit.im Inertgasstrom zugeführt. Die Abführung der Reaktionswärme erfolgt durch Außenkühlung. Gegebenenfalls
wird noch Katalysator zugesetzt. Die Umsetzung ist beendet,

wenn der Aldehyd quantitativ verbraucht ist. Man erhält
eine klare Lösung, aus der nach Entfernen des Lösemittels im Vakuum in quantitativer Ausbeute das jeweilige (Hydroxymethyl)-alkyl-,-cycloalkyl-
oder -aralkylphosphin erhalten wird.
Die Vorteile des erfincLungs gemäß en Verfahrens gegenüber
den bekannten Verfahrensweisen liegen neben der einfachen und praktisch gefahrlosen Durchführbarkeit, vor allem in
den hohen Ausbeuten, nahezu quantitativen Umsätzen, der hohen Reinheit und Einheitlichkeit der Reaktionsprodukte,
sowie in der Tatsache, daß es eine kontinuierliche Arbeitsweise erlaubt.
Die nach dem erfindungsgemäßen Verfahren hergestellten
Phosphine stellen wertvolle reaktive Zwischenprodukte
für die verschiedenartigsten Synthesen dar, insbesondere für Synthesen von Flammschutzmitteln, Arzneimitteln und
Textilhilfsmitteln.Sie sind außerdem als Aktivatoren bei der Herstellung flammfester Polyurethane von Bedeutung.
Die folgenden Beispiele sollen das erfindungsgemäße Verfahren
näher erläutern.
Beispiel 1 (Diskontinuierliche Verfahrensweise)
In einem 1 1 Reaktionsgefäß werden 240 g (8 Mol) Parafoimal.dab.yd
in 287 g Methanol unter Stickstoff suspendiert. Der Reaktor ist ausgerüstet mit einem Intensivrührer, einer
Temperaturmessung, Gaseinleitungs- und Ableitungsrohr,
Rückflußkühler- und einer Kühlschlange, Der Apparatur ist eine auf -78°C gekühlte Kühlfalle nachgeschaltet. Aus
Sicherheitsgründen steht die gesamte Apparatur in Verbindung mit einem Abgas-Verbrennungssystem.
Es werden 194 g Methylphosphin unter intensiver Durchmischung
eingeleitet. Die Temperatur wird durch Kühlung

auf 30 C gehalten. Nach 4 Stunden erhält man eine klare r
60 %ige methanolische Lösung von Bis-(hydroxymethyl)-methy!phosphin,
aus der durch Entfernen des Lösemittels im Vakuum bei Temperaturen bis 300C leicht das reine
Phosphin erhalten wird. Das Lösemittel wird quantitativ zurückgewonnen und karr, erneut eingesetzt werden. Man erhält
431 g 100 %iges Bis-(hydroxymethyl)-methylphosphin,
eine farblose, im Vakuum destillierbare Flüssigkeit, Kp 3 Torr 89 - 900C, τξ° 1.5328.
Das nach vorliegendem Verfahren hergestellte Bis-(hydroxymethyl)-methy!phosphin
entspricht vollständig einem nach dem Druckverfahren von E.I. Grinstein hergestellten Ver—
gleichsprodukt in seinem IR- und NMR-Spektren.
In der nachgeschalteten Kühlfalle befinden sich 2 g nicht umgesetztes Methylphosphi-n, welches erneut eingesetzt werden
kann. Der Umsatz, bezogen auf Methylphosphin, beträgt
99 %.
Gehalt: (jodometr. Titration im sauren Medium) 100 %
Analyse: C5H9O2P
berechnet: C 33,3 %; H 8,3 %; P 28,7 %.
gefunden: C 33,5 %; H 8,5 %; P 28,4 %.
Die Wiederholung des Versuches unter Einsatz des Methanols durch Äthanol sowie durch Methylenchlorid führte zu gleichartigen
Ergebnissen. Auch der Ersatz des Paraformaldehyds
durch Formaldehyd (40 %ige methanolische Lösung) bzw. durch Trioxan führt zum gleichen Produkt.
Es wird wie im Beispiel 1 beschrieben verfahren, nur wird der Reaktionsmischung wasserfreies Cadmiumchlorid (0,01$)
als Katalysator zugesetzt. Die Reaktionszeit verkürzt sich

auf 3 Stunden, was einer Zeitersparnis von 25 % entspricht.
Das erhaltene Bis-(hydroxymethyl)-methylphosphin entspricht dem nach Beispiel 1 hergestellten Produkt. Die Ausbeute beträgt
praktisch 100 %. Das Produkt enthält keine Verunreinigungen.
In der nachfolgenden Tabelle sind weitere Katalysatoren,
die im erfindungsgemäßen Verfahren eingesetzt werden können, und die jeweiligen Reaktionszeiten und prozentualen
Reaktionszeit-Verkürzungen zusammengestellt. Die im Beispiel 1 angeführte Ausführungsform des erfindungsgemäßen
Verfahrens dient als Standard.

Unter den analogen Bedingungen von Beispiel 1 werden 126 g
Dimethylphosphin mit 60 g Paraformaldehyd in 3 Stunden bei
20 bis 25°C umgesetzt Nach dem Entfernen des Methanols im Vakuum erhält man 180 g (97,8 % Ausbeute) (Hydroxymethyl)-dimethylphosphin.
Der Umsatz an Dimethylphosphin beträgt 97,5 %
Gehalt: (jodometr. Titration im sauren Medium) 99%
Analyse: C7H9OP
berechnet: C 39,1 %; H 9,9%; P 33,7%. gefunden: C 39,4 %; H 10,2%; P 33,4%.
Das nach dem erfindungsgemäßen Verfahren hergestellte
(Hydroxymethyl)-dimethylphosphin stellt eine farblose, im
Vakuum destillierbare Flüssigkeit dar; Kp Λη Φ^^^ 5O-51°C,
ppi lu xorr
n^ I.5OI6. .Es entspricht in seinen chemischen und physikalischen
Eigenschaften vollständig einem nach dem Autoklav-Verfahren von E.I. Grinstein hergestellten Vergleichs
produkt.
Bei Verwendung der genannten Katalysatoren kann auch hier
die Reaktionszeit je nach der verwandten Katalysator-Menge bis zu 30 % reduziert werden.
YIIe im Beispiel 1 beschrieben werden 64 g Äthylphosphin
mit 60 g Paraformaldehyd in 3 Stunden bei 30 bis 35°C umgesetzt. Nach dem Entfernen des Methanols im Vakuum
erhält man 122 g (100 % Ausbeute bez. auf Paraformaldehyd) Bis-(hydroxymethyl)-äthylphosphin. Der Umsatz an Diäthylphosphin
beträgt 96,8 %.

gefunden: C 39,6 %; H 9,2 %; P 25,5 %.
Das nach dem erfindungsgemäßen Verfahren hergestellte
Bis-(hydroxymethyl)-äthylphosphin stellt eine farblose, im Vakuum destillierbare Flüssigkeit dar;
Kp 1 Torr 81 - 83°C, n^° 1.5253. Es entspricht vollständig
einem nach dem Autoklav-Verfahren von E.I.
Grinstein hergestellten Vergleichsprodukt.
Mit den erfindungsgemäßen Katalysatoren kann auch in
diesem Fall die Reaktionszeit erheblich verkürzt werden.
Beispiel 5 (kontinuierliche Verfahrensweise)
In einem etwa 80 cm langen kühlbaren Doppelmantelreaktor mit einem Durchmesser von 8 cm, an dessen unterem
Ende ( ca. 3 cm über dem Boden) eine Filterplatte eingebaut ist, der mit Intensivrührer und Temperaturstutzen
ausgerüstet ist und an dessen oberem Ende sich je eine Dosiervorrichtung für Methanol und Paraformaldehyd befindet,
wird eine Suspension von Paraformaldehyd in Methanol gegeben. Durch ein Gaseinleitungrohr werden
im Gegenstrom von unten 22,4 l/h Methylphosphin (1 Mol/h)
unter Inertgasatmosphäre (Stickstoff oder COp) und intensiver Durchmischurig bei gleichzeitiger kontinuierlicher
Zugabe von 60 g Paraformaldehyd pro Stunde (2 Mol/h) eingeleitet. Parallel dazu werden unterhalb der Filterplatte
kontinuierlich 200 g/h der entstandenen klaren Lösung von Bis-(hydroxymethyl)-methylphosphin in Methanol
abgezogen und das Lösemittel in einer sich anschließenden Destillationsstufe kontinuierlich im Vakuum abgetrennt
und zur Aufrechterhaltung konstanter stöchiometrischer Verhältnisse in den Reaktor zurückgeführt
(ca. 92 g/h Methanol). __ΛΛ_

Die Reaktion wird unter Sauerstoffausschluß bei einer Temperatur <! 40 C -durchgeführt.
Das erhaltene Bis-(hydroxymethyl)-methylphosphin wird
in praktisch 100 %iger Ausbeute erhalten. Das Produkt ist identisch mit dem im Beispiel 1 beschriebenen und
enthält kein Bis-(hydroxymethyl)-methylphosphinoxid.
Bei der kontinuierlichen Verfahrensweise können beispielsweise anstelle des Methylphosphins auch Dimethylphosphin
und Äthylphosphin und anstelle von Methanol, Äthanol oder Methylenchlorid mit Erfolg eingesetzt werden. Zur Beschleunigung
der Reaktion können, auch bei dieser Verfahrensweise die oben beschriebenen Katalysatoren eingesetzt
werden. Die Raum-Zeit-Ausbeuten können dadurch um bis zu 20 % gesteigert v/erden.

Claims (14)
1) Verfahren zur Herstellung von (Hydroxymethyl)-alkyl-,
-cycloalkyl- oder -aralkylphosphinen der allgemeinen
Formel
(RR')nP(CH20H)3_n
worin η = 1 und 2 und R bzw. R1 gleiche oder verschiedene,
substituierte'oder nicht substituierte Alkyl-, Cycloalkyl-
oder Aralkylres-fe mit 1 bis 18, vorzugsweise 1 bis 4, insbesondere
1 oder 2 C-Atomen sein können, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man die entsprechenden Mono- oder Di-,
-alkyl-, -cycloalkyl- oder -aralkylphosphine mit Formaldehyd,
Paraformaldehyd oder Trioxan in Gegenwart'von polaren organischen Lösemitteln, die gegenüber dem Reaktionsprodukt
inert sind, bei Atmosphärendruck und Temperaturen unterhalb 40°C umsetzt und das Lösemittel anschließend
abtrennt.
2) Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß
man inerte
verwendet.

3) Verfahren nach Anspruch 1 oder 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet,
daß man als Lösemittel Alkohole, Glykole, Äther, alkylierte Formamide, aliphatische oder aromatische Nitrile, halogenierte
aliphatische oder aromatische Kohlenwasserstoffe, cyclische und offenkettige Sulfone, Carbonsäureanhydride
oder -ester, N-alkylierte Carbonsäureamide oder Gemische
aus diesen Lösemitteln einsetzt.
4) Verfahren nach Anspruch 3, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß
man Methanol, Äthanol, Propanol, Isopropanol, Chloroform, Methylenchlorid, Methyl- oder Äthylacetat einsetzt.
5) Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 4, dadurch gekennzeichnet,
daß man zusätzlich einen Katalysator.verwendet.

6) Verfahren nach Anspruch 5, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man die Katalysatoren in Mengen von 100 ppm bis 0,1 Gewichts%,
bezogen auf die Formaldehydmenge, einsetzt.
7) Verfahren nach Anspruch 5 oder 6, dadurch gekennzeichnet,
daß man als Katalysatoren Metallsalze der zweiten oder achten Gruppe des Periodischen Systems der Elemente, Phos-
- phate, Phosphite, Hypophosphite oder Phosphoniumverbindungen
des Typs /~R2R^P_7X bzw. /~RRiP_7x einsetzt, wobei
R und R' substituierte und nicht substituierte organische Radikale und X = Cl" f Br", J", CH^COO" oder H2PO^ bedeutet.
8) Verfahren nach Anspruch 7, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß
man als Metallsalze Salze des Platins, Rhodiums, Cadmiums oder Nickels einsetzt.
9) Verfahren nach Anspruch 8, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man die Metallsalze in komplexer Form einsetzt.
10) Verfahren nach Anspruch 8 oder 9, dadurch gekennzeichnet,
daß man als Metallsalze die entsprechenden Chloride einsetzt.
11) Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 10, dadurch gekennzeichnet,
daß man unter Schutzgasatmosphäre arbeitet.
12) Verfahren nach Anspruch 11, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß
man als Schutzgas Stickstoff, Argon oder Kohlendioxid einsetzt.
13) Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 12, dadurch gekennzeichnet,
daß man zur kontinuierlichen Durchführung des Verfahrens in einem durch· eine flüssigkeitsdurchlässige
Trennwand unterteilten sowie mit einer vorgelegten

Lösung von (Hydroxymethyl)-alkyl-, -cycloalkyl- oder -aralkylphosphin
in dem organischen Lösemittel gefüllten Reaktor, im ersten Teil des Reaktors in der genannten Lösung Paraformaldehyd
suspendiert, unter intensivem Rühren in diese Suspension gleichzeitig das jeweilige Mono- oder Di-, -alkyl-, -cycloalkyl-
oder -aralky!phosphin, Paraformaldehyd und Lösemittel
kontinuierlich und in solchen Mengen einträgt, die den neugebildeten Mengen an (Hydroxymethyl)-alkyl-, -cycloalkyl-
oder -aralkylphosphinlösung entsprechen, welche aus dem zv/eiten Teil des Reaktors ebenfalls kontinuierlich abgezogen
werden und aus denen anschließend das Lösemittel abgetrennt und in den ersten Teil des Reaktors zurückgeführt
wird.
14) Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 13, dadurch gekennzeichnet,
daß man die Umsetzung bei Temperaturen von 3o bis °C durchführt.
