Description
Die Erfindung betrifft ein neues Verfahren zur Herstellung von Hydroxythiolen, insbesondere H-Hydroxy-^-mercaptoäthan,
bekannt unter dem Mamen Mereaptoäthanol* Diese Verbindung
ist wertvoll als Korrosionsinhibitor, ale Bestandteil von
Textilausrüstungen und als Zwischenprodukt zur Herstellung
von pharmazeutischen Produkteno
Die bekannten Herstellungsverfahren beruhen auf der*Einwirkung
von Äthylenoxyd oder von dessen flüssigen oder gaeförmigeh
Homologen*auf Überschüssigen, flüssigen oder gasförmigen
Schwefelwasserstoff in Gegenwart unterschiedlicher

Katalysatoren, beispielsweise Eisensulfid oder Kaolin. Dae Ver
fahren wird bei 350 0C durchgeführt (vgl. Chemical Abstracts,
Bund 21 (1940), Spo 1970). Wenn die Reaktion gut kontrolliert
wird, ist die Ausbeute praktisch quantitativ. Die einwandfreie Kontrolle der Reaktion bei 350 0C ist jedoch in technischem
Masstab kaum mögliche Es ist auch bekannt, in Gegenwart von
lösungsmitteln zu arbeiten, beispielsweise von Thiodiglykol,
welches die Bildung von Hydroxythiol katalysiert. Jedoch führt diese Verfahrensmassnähme zu verhältnismäseig niedrigen Ausbeuten an Hydroxythiol, welche im allgemeinen 50 % nicht überschreiten;
andererseits erhält man in der Hauptsache Thiodiglykole.
Erfindungsgemäss werden Hydroxythiole durch Umsetzung dee entsprechenden
Epoxyde mit Überschüssigem Schwefelwasserstoff in
Gegenwart eines Katalysators hergestellt, indem man als Kata-Iysator
ein Ionenaustauecherharz einsetzt und bei Temperature»
zwischen 0 und 100 0C arbeitet.
Durch die Verwendung von Ionenaustauscherharzeη anstelle von
anorganischen Katalysatoren wird nicht nur das Arbeiten bei
tieferen Temperaturen als bei dem bekannten Verfahren eraöglicht.
Man erhält euch flüssige Produkte, welche bis zu 80 %
dee gewünschten Hydroxythiole enthalten können. Auseerden eind
die anoeldungegemäee verwendeten Katalysatoren viel einfacher

zu handhaben und erfordern keine spezielle HerstellungBweise.
Die Katalysatoren sind im Handel erhältlich und führen zu
zufriedenstellend reproduzierbaren Ergebnissen*
Unter den verschieden bekannten Kationen- und Anionenaustauschert'arzen,
beispielsweise den Harzen auf der Basis von sulfoniert
te* Phenol-Formaldehyd-Produkten, den Polyaminen, Polyaminen
von iltyrol-Divinylbenzol-Mischpolymerisaten, Methaerylharzen,
quatertisierten Ammoniurcdariv&ten von Sfcyrolmischpolymerieaten
oder Harnstoff-For maläehyd» diie untei den Handelsbezeichnungen
Amberlite® oder Dowexö'bekannt Bind, eignen sich die Austauscher·
harze auf der Basis von Polyaminen besonders zur Durchführung des erfindun^fcgemässen Verfahrens«
Vorzugsweise ist somit der Katalysator ein leicht saures oder basisches Kationen« oder Anlonenaustauscherharz. Es können auch
mehrere dieser Harzt zusammen verwendet werden« Unter den verwendbaren
Katalysatoren seien die im Handel unter den Handelebezeichnungen
Doweß/2/OH" (Polyamin), AmberliteSj wie IR 45/OH**
(Polyamiη einee Styrol-Divinylbenzol-Mischpolymerisates), IHA
4Cf1/Cl~ (quaternäres Ammoniumderivat eines Styrol-Di'vinylbenzol-Hieohpolymerisatee)
unci IH 50/H+ (Methacrylharz) bekannter Auetaueoher
genannt. .

Man kann das Heaktionsmedium mit einem inerten, fliessfähigen
Kedium verdünnen o v/enn das Alkylenoxyd gasförmig
ist, wie Äthylenoxyd, so ist das fliessfähige Verdünnungsmedium ein Inertgas, wie Stickstoff oder Kohlendioxyd· Das
fliesefähige Verdünnungsmittel dient zur Abführung der durch die Umsetzung erzeugten Wärmemenge. Die exotherme Natur der
Umsetzung ist recht erhebliche
Das erfindungs^emässe Verfahren wird durch verschiedene FaIc
tores beeinflusst, insbesondere durch die Anteile der im Verfahren
anwesenden Gase, durch den Durchsatz (die ttauragesohwindigkeit)
dieser Gase, die Temperatur und die Natur des ausgewählt
en Katalysators.

Eine mit Einrichtungen zur Regulierung der Wärme ausgerüstete Kolonne füllt man mit Körnern der OH-Form eines Styrol-Divinylbenzol-Miachpolymeren
mit quaternären Ammoniumgruppen ala funktioneile Gruppen (Handelsbezeichnung Dowe»ö^2). Van
leitet eine Mischung aus Ä'thylenoxyd und Schwefelwasserstoff
im Molverhältnla von 1 s 2 durch das Bett dieses Harzes.
Man hält die Kolonne bei 40 0C. Der Durchsatz dea Gases beträgt
450 1/std. je Liter Katalysatorbett. Am Kolonnenausgang
erhält man Mercaptoäthanol (HS-CH2-CH2-OH) in einer
Ausbeute von.72 #.

Man beschickt die Kolonne des Beispiels 1 mit einem Polystyrolharz,
in das Polyamine eingeführt sind (Handelsbezeichnung Amber-UteX-ZlE
45) in der OH-Form. Die Arbeitsbedingungen sind äie
gleichen wie in Beispiel t» Man erhält das Mercaptoäthanol in
einer Ausbeute von 75 #.

Wenn man das Harz des Beispiels 2 durch ein Polystyrolharz in

der Cl-Form, in das quaternäre Amine eingeführt sind (Handelsbezeichnung
Amberlite*'IRA 4Oil ersetzt, so erhält man eine Ausbeute
von 62 560
Man verwendet statt des Harzes von Beispiel 1, jedoch unter den
in Beispiel 1 angegebenen Arbeitsbedingungen, eine Mischung von gleichen Teilen eines Polystyrols, in das Carbonaäuregruppen eingeführt
sind, (Handelsbezeichnung Amber-J-ite IR 50) in der H-Form
und des Harzes von Soispiel 2 (OH-Form)o Die Ausbeute beträgt
dann 50 7», ' ■
Beispiel 5 .
Weiset
Man stellt die Temperatur auf 25 0C und den Durchsatz auf 100
ein. Das Reaktionsmedium verdünnt man mit Stickn+off in einer
Menge von 1 Raumteil H2 ie Raumteil Äthylenoxyd, Man erhält
eine Ausbeute von 79,5 i» Meroaptoäthanol.
Man modifiziert die Verfahrensweise des Beispiels 2 in folgender Weiset

In der Verfahrensweise dta Beispiele 6 «erden die Verhältnisse
der Gase zueinander modifiziert, nämlich auf 3 VoIumenteile
HgS zu 2 Volumentellen Äthylenoxyd und 1J8 Volumenteilen
Stickstoff. Dies ergibt eine Ausbeute von 57 #.
In der Verfahrensweise des Beispiels 2 ersetzt ma^ uns
Xthylenoxyd durch Propylen-1,2-oxyd. Man erhält dann 1-Meroaptopropanol-(2)
in einer Ausbeute von 73 i>·
Statt wie in Beispiel 8 Propylerioxyd setzt man 1-Monochlorpropylen-2s3-oxyd
um und erhält 1-Chlor-3-mercaptopropanol-(2)»
