Abstract
本发明揭示一种液晶显示板,提供能够提高取向稳定性,提高显示均匀性,提高显示质量的液晶显示板。在促进液晶材料取向稳定,并且诱发扭转取向,以使均匀显示成为可能的同时,提高光学特性平衡。特别是取晶室厚度d为7微米以上,取液晶分子的扭转角度为240度以下,以此可以得到稳定的取向界限。
Description
本发明涉及用于作为一种图像显示器件的液晶显示器件中的液晶显示板。
液晶显示器件是采用液晶显示板的显示器件,该显示板利用液晶从初始取向方位改变到其他取向状态的光学特性变化。这种液晶显示器件和已有的显示器件相比,能够以较低的电压驱动,适用于由LSI进行的驱动,是低耗电类型的器件,可以使设备薄型、轻便,因此近年来借助于大屏面化、大容量化,以安装在OA(办公室自动化设备)和AV设备上使用为目标,正在进行着开发研究和商品化的工作。
现在,液晶显示器件这种利用液晶被加上电场而发生排列状态变化的器件,也就是利用电光学特性的单纯矩阵制的超扭转向列(STN)型液晶显示器件和有源矩阵制的薄膜晶体管(TFT)型液晶显示器件等按照各自的特征安装于各种商品上。
表示上述那样的液晶显示器件上使用的液晶显示板的基本结构的结构图示于图8。在图8中,1是刻段侧的玻璃基板,2是共用侧的玻璃基板,3是放入支撑体的密封剂,4是用透明电极膜形成的共用侧的ITO(氧化铟锡)电极,5是用透明电极膜形成的分段侧的ITO(氧化铟锡)电极,6是纵向黑阵、7是取向膜,8是支撑体,9是液晶,10是滤色镜。
这样,液晶显示器件上使用的液晶显示板具有在形成透明电极图案的2片玻璃基板中间夹着液晶的夹层状结构。在透明的电极膜上形成用于使液晶取向的高分子薄膜。在STN型的液晶显示板上,基板之间的晶室厚度d通常为5~7微米左右。这种液晶显示板用在高分子薄膜上摩擦的方法控制液晶的取向,使其具有3~8度左右的预倾角。而STN型利用液晶的双折射和光的旋光性,在两片基板之间使液晶的取向方向扭转180~270度以便能够取得显著陡峭的阈值特性。因此STN型的晶室厚度d要求有0.05~0.1微米的精度。
又,为了使液晶分子在规定的晶室厚度d内只扭转所述角度,添加微量的手性试剂,以此引发液晶扭转一定的角度。这时的添加量因取向膜及预倾角、液晶材料、手性试剂、扭转角度等而不同,通常添加1wt%左右。
液晶显示板的光学特性由液晶分子具有的双折射特性、介电常数的各向异性Δε等得到。此外,调整所使用的液晶材料的组成、其成份的比例,包括黏性、弹性常数等,将改变液晶显示板的光学特性。现在已经开发研究出各种各样的液晶材料,可以借助于液晶材料的调配得到所希望的特性。
这时根据考虑了驱动液晶显示板用的LSI的耐压的液晶阈值电压、驱动波形、晶室厚度d、扭转角度、其他光学特性的平衡,自然而然设定了Δε。最终,由液晶具有的双折射率Δn和液晶层的厚度(晶室厚度)d的乘积Δn×d与相位差膜构成的光学补偿结构的组合决定液晶显示板的特性。
如上所述的STN型液晶显示器件使用的已有的液晶显示板中,为了使夹在该玻璃基板之间的向列型液晶分子只扭转规定的扭转角度,通常添加手性向列型液晶或胆甾醇衍生物。前者的手性向列型液晶,分子形状及化学、光学上的稳定性虽然类似向列型液晶,但是上面所述那样的手性添加剂其性质基本上与所谓向列型液晶不同,因此使液晶显示板产生种种问题。
具体地说,由于手性试剂其分子末端基具有立体性非常强的非对称碳原子,会产生妨碍液晶体或界面的液晶分子的取向的有序度,引起微小的显示斑点的问题。而且有用于保持晶室厚度d的支撑体周围的取向也引起相同的显示斑点的问题。
而且,一旦添加手性试剂,从向列型液晶层转变为各向同性液体的温度(Tni点)即下降,因此温度特性变坏,为了得到相同的温度特性,就有与特性平衡(对比度、响应速度)下降有关的问题。
本发明是为解决上述问题而作出的,提供能够提高取向稳定性,提高显示均匀性,提高显示质量的液晶显示板。
为了解决上述课题,本发明的液晶显示板,其特征在于,促进液晶材料的稳定取向,而且诱发扭转取向,以使均匀显示成为可能,同时改善光学特性的平衡。
本发明权利要求1所述的液晶显示板,在形成于一主面上的透明电极图案上进行了取向处理的两片基板之间夹着液晶而构成,其特征在于,添加于所述液晶的手性试剂的添加量取0.5重量%以下,而且使添加1重量%手性试剂时的HTP(扭转螺距)和晶室厚度d取满足关系式1.1×P≤d的数值。
采用上述结构,液晶显示板中的取向稳定,显示的均匀性得以提高,并且光学特性变好。
权利要求2所述的液晶显示板是根据权利要求1所述的液晶显示板,其中所述晶室厚度d取7微米以上。
采用上述结构,取向界限与扭距变动的相关性减少,以此可以得到稳定的取向界限。
权利要求3所述的液晶显示板是根据权利要求1或2所述的液晶显示板,其中所述液晶分子扭转的扭转角度取240度以下。
采用上述结构,得到宽广的取向界限,相对于d、P的变动,维持稳定的取向状态。
根据以上所述,本发明的液晶显示板能够促进液晶材料稳定取向,并且诱发扭转取向,以使均匀显示成为可能,同时提高光学特性平衡。
图1是以本发明的液晶显示板评价的从向列型液晶到各向同性液体的转变温度变化和手性试剂添加量的关系图。
图2是以晶室厚度d取7微米、HTP取5微米、扭转角度取240度时的电压为0伏特,对同上实施例在加静态波形时显示斑点消失的电压加以比较的比较图。
图3是同上实施例在加静态波形、透射率最低时相对于不同手性试剂添加量的绝对透射率比较图。
图4是在同上实施例评价的从向列型液晶向各向同性液体转变的转变温度变化与d/HTP的关系图。
图5是以晶室厚度d取6微米、HTP取5微米、扭转角度取250度时的电压为0伏特时,在不同的d/HTP对同上实施例在加静态波形时显示斑点消失的电压加以比较的比较图。
图6是同上实施例在加静态波形、透射率最低时相对于d/HTP的绝对透射率比较图。
图7是同上实施例的液晶显示板的基本形态的说明图。
图8是表示同上实施例的液晶显示板的基本结构的结构图。
下面参照附图对表示本发明的实施例的液晶显示板进行具体说明。这里也使用具有图8所述的结构的液晶显示板进行说明,但是关于该液晶显示板的基本结构,其概略情况已经在已有技术中进行过说明,因此这里省略。
图7是本实施例与比较例的说明图。该图7表示用作样品的各液晶显示板的条件一览表及均匀性感应评价结果。如图7所示,液晶材料使用在全部液晶显示板添加相同的酯系的手性向列型液晶,采用这时HTP分别为5微米、5.5微米、6微米、7微米,且电介质各向异性为正的向列型液晶。又,折射率各向异性Δn全部为0.14,晶室厚度d取6微米或7微米,Δn×d的数值取0.84,扭转角度取250度或240度。
根据以上形态构成11.3型的SVGA显示板,在该SVGA显示板上施加占空比为1/300、偏置1/18bias、120Hz的驱动波形,以标准黑的结构进行均匀性的目视感应评价。该项评价结果示于图7的最下栏,亦即均匀性栏,如该栏所示,最佳条件是手性向列相添加0.393wt%的情况,HTP分别为5微米,晶室厚度d为7微米的情况。还有,扭转角度250度和240度均为最佳,但是在理想的是240度以下。
不好的是手性向列相添加0.642wt%时,HTP分别为7微米,单元厚度d为6微米的情况。而手性向列相添加0.458或0.504wt%,HTP为5或5.5微米,单元厚度d为6微米的情况为良好的情况。
在该SVGA显示板上又施加64Hz的静态驱动波形,以目视对微小斑点消失的电压进行比较,还一并测定从向列型液晶转变到各向同性液体的转变温度(Tni)在添加手性试剂之前和添加之后如何变化。该测定结果示于图1~图6。
图1是以本实施例评价的液晶显示板中,从向列型液晶到各向同性液体的转变温度变化与手性试剂添加量的关系图。所谓向各向同性液体转变的转变温度变化是不添加手性试剂的情况下从向列型液晶转变为各相同性液体的转变温度与添加手性试剂的情况下的转变温度的比较值。转变温度变低则液晶性能变坏。因此,转变温度变化小的液晶显示板性能好。因此得出手性添加剂的添加量少则性能好的结论。图中“d=6”表示晶室厚度为6微米,“250度扭转”表示使用扭转角度为250度的液晶。“+”号表示使用晶室厚度为7微米,扭转角度为250度的液晶的液晶显示板,“◇”号表示使用晶室厚度为7微米,扭转角度为240度的液晶的液晶显示板。
图2是表示在本实施例的液晶显示板加静态波形时显示斑点消失的电压、HTP和单元厚度d的关系图的比较图。在“◇”的条件(晶室厚度d取7微米、HTP取5微米、扭转角度取240度)下没有显示斑点,没有必要加电压,因此电压为0伏特。在“+”的条件下产生显示斑点,因此,与“◇”的条件相比,只需要加0.01V的电压。在“□”的条件下为了消除显示斑点,与“◇”的条件相比,只需要加0.03V的电压。从该图1可知,HTP为5微米左右,晶室厚度d取7微米,扭转角度为240度的条件为最佳。
图3是在本实施例的液晶显示板加静态波形、光透射率最低时相对于手性试剂添加量的绝对透射率比较图。绝对透射率是透过透射率最低的液晶显示板的光量与透过之前的光量的比,绝对透射率小的液晶显示板是明暗清晰的优异的液晶显示板。如该图3所示,手性试剂添加量小的显示板绝对透射率低。而晶室厚度7微米的比6微米的好,扭转角度240度的比250度的好。
图4是本实施例评价的液晶显示板从向列型液晶向各向同性液体转变的转变温度变化与d/HTP的关系图。d/HTP为0.11的点转变温度变化最大。
图5是表示在本实施例的液晶显示板加静态波形时显示斑点消失的电压与d/HTP的关系的关系图。晶室厚度d取6微米、HTP取5微米(d/HTP=1.2)、扭转角度取250度时显示斑点消失,消除显示斑点的电压为0V。从该图可知,在d/HTP>1.1时电压变化为0、显示斑点消失,性能良好。但是在d/HTP<1.1时产生显示斑点,因此,为了使显示斑点消失,必须加电压。
图6是在本实施例的液晶显示板加静态波形、透射率最低时绝对透射率与d/HTP值的比较图。绝对透射率如以图3所作的说明所述,透射率小的液晶显示板透过的光量少,是明暗反差清晰的优异的液晶显示板。因此,d/HTP>1.1的显示板是优异的液晶显示板。
实验结果1
如从图7所了解的那样,以抑制手性试剂添加量的方法确认均匀性及取向稳定性,并且也可以使Tni变化小,因此容易谋求特性平衡。在这种情况下,把手性试剂添加量抑制在0.5%以下,并且设置d/HTP≥1.1的限制条件,尤其证实有效。
实验结果2
只是对液晶的Δn进行调整,Δn×d、取向界限、HTP(5微米)相同,取晶室厚度d为7微米,还有,扭转角度取240度,与实验结果1进行相同的评价。其结果是,d越厚,而扭转角度取得越小,则可以使取向界限扩大,从而证实均匀性得到提高。而且其效果由于设置d/HTP≥1.1的限制条件而更加提高。
采用上述方法,可以提高取向稳定性和显示的均匀性,同时可以提高显示质量。特别是晶室厚度d取7微米以上,液晶分子的扭转角度取240度以下,可以得到稳定的取向界限。借助于此,可以使上述效果进一步提高。
上述各实施例叙述手性试剂使用酯系的手性向列型液晶的情况,但是已经确认使用联苯系等其他种类的手性试剂也有同样的效果。
Claims (3)
1.一种液晶显示板,在形成于其相对面上的透明电极图案上进行了取向处理的两片基板之间夹着液晶而构成,其特征在于,添加于所述液晶的手性试剂的添加量取0.5重量%以下,而且使添加1重量%手性试剂时的扭转螺距P和晶室厚度d取满足关系式1.1×P≤d的数值。
2.根据权利要求1所述的液晶显示板,其特征在于,晶室厚度d取7微米以上。
3.根据权利要求1或2所述的液晶显示板,其特征在于,液晶分子扭转的扭转角度取240度以下。
