技术领域
本发明涉及用于标记纸产品例如货币的方法和系统,以及通过该方法和系统制备的产品。
背景
本文中使用的术语“纸”指的是用于书写、印刷、包装和其它应用的广泛种类的纤维素基片材。纸可以用于例如但不限于以下应用:作为纸币、银行票据、股票和债券、支票、邮票等;用于书籍、杂志、报纸和艺术品;用于包装,例如纸板、瓦楞纸板、纸袋、信封、包装用薄页纸、盒子;用于家用产品例如卫生纸、薄纸、纸巾和餐巾纸;在复合材料中用作芯材的纸蜂窝;建筑材料;建筑用纸;一次性衣物;以及用于多种工业用途中,包括砂纸、沙纸、吸墨纸、石蕊试纸、通用试纸、纸色谱、电池隔板和电容器电介质。
在一些应用中,例如当纸用作货币时以及在金融应用中,通常希望能够用肉眼不可见和/或不能容易地被伪造者制造的特殊标记“标记”或“标签”纸。标记可以例如用于防止或检测货币、艺术品和其他有价值文件的伪造。标记也可在货币上使用以允许货币被追踪和/或识别,例如如果其被盗或者用于犯罪交易。
发明内容
本发明部分基于这样的发现:通过以合适的水平照射纸,可以改变照射的纸的官能化,由此使得纸可例如通过红外光谱(IR)或其它技术与未照射的纸区分。在一些情形中,纸还可与已照射的、但在其它加工条件下的纸区分。结果,纸产品例如货币可以通过本文所述的方法“标记”。在一些实施方案中,标记对肉眼不可见,例如其通过使用仪器检测。在另一些实施方案中,标记对肉眼可见。一般而言,在没有相对尖端的设备下难以复制标记,由此使得伪造更困难。
通过“官能化”,我们是指存在于纸上或内的官能团。
在一个方面,本发明特征在于制备标记纸产品的方法。一些方法包括在选择为改变纸产品的至少一个区域的官能化的条件下照射纸产品。
一些实施方案包括一个或多个以下特征。纸可用电离辐射照射。电离辐射的剂量可以为至少例如0.10MRad,例如至少0.25MRad。电离辐射的剂量可以控制在约0.25-约5MRad的水平。照射可以包括用γ辐射和/或用电子束辐射或者其它粒子照射。电子束中的电子可以具有至少0.25MeV,例如约0.25MeV-约7.5MeV的能量。
该方法可以进一步包括猝灭照射的纸产品。例如,猝灭可以在选择为与照射的纸产品中存在的自由基反应的气体存在下进行。
在一些情形中,仅照射纸产品的一部分。在一些情形中,仅一部分照射区域或者整个纸产品仅一部分被猝灭。例如,可以屏蔽保持未标记和/或未猝灭的区域。
照射可以在纸产品形成期间进行。形成可以包括将纸浆材料混合成湿纸幅。照射可以在湿纸幅上进行或者在形成湿纸幅之前进行。形成可以进一步包括将湿纸幅干燥,并且照射可以在干燥之后进行。在一些实施方案中,在形成纸之前、期间或之后可以单独或者组合施加粉末、颗粒、化学溶液、染料、油墨或气体。
在另一个方面,本发明特征在于标记纸产品,其包括纤维素或木质纤维素纤维材料,所述纤维材料含有由其获得标记纸产品的天然形成纤维素或木质纤维素纤维材料中不存在的官能团。
纸产品中的纤维素或木质纤维素材料可以例如选自源自木材和回收纸的纤维,植物纤维材料,例如棉、大麻、亚麻布、稻、甘蔗、甘蔗渣、稻草、竹子、洋麻、黄麻和亚麻,和它们的混合物。在一些实施方案中,金属或无机填料也可与纤维素或木质纤维素材料一起包括或者包括在一部分照射的纸产品中。
在另一个方面,本发明特征在于一种识别纸产品是否标记的方法。该方法包括将样品纸产品的官能化与标记纸产品的官能化比较。
在一些情形中,该方法包括使用红外光谱(IR)确定样品纸产品的官能化。该方法可以包括将样品纸产品中存在的羧酸基的数目与标记纸产品中存在的羧酸基的数目比较。
在一些情形中,使用原子力显微镜(AFM)、化学力显微镜(CFM)或电子自旋共振(ESR)确定官能化。
纸产品可以是例如货币或艺术品。
在本文公开的任一种方法中,官能化可以包括增加纸中存在的羧酸基的数目。羧酸基的数目通过滴定确定。
照射的材料还可以包括选自以下的官能团:醛基、亚硝基、腈基、硝基、酮基、氨基、烷基氨基、烷基、氯烷基、氯氟烷基和烯醇基。
在一些实施方案中,照射的材料可以包括排列在分子链中的多个糖单元,并且每5个糖单元中约1个至每1500个糖单元中约1个包含亚硝基、硝基或腈基,例如每个链的每10个糖单元中约1个至每1000个糖单元中约1个包含亚硝基、硝基或腈基,或者每个链的每35个糖单元中约1个至每750个糖单元中约1个包含亚硝基、硝基或腈基。在一些情形中,照射的材料包含腈基和羧酸基的混合物。
在一些实施方案中,糖单元可以基本上仅包括单种基团,例如羧酸基、腈基、亚硝基或硝基。
本文使用的术语“纸”意在包括含纤维素的片材和包含纤维素的复合片材。例如,纸可以包括塑料基质中的纤维素,或者与添加剂或粘合剂组合的纤维素。
在本文公开的任一种方法中,辐射可以由地下室中的设备提供。

详述
如上所述,本发明部分地基于如下发现:通过以合适的水平照射纤维材料,即纤维素和木质纤维素材料,可以改变纤维材料的至少纤维素部分的分子结构,改变纤维材料的官能化。除了标记纸外,改变官能化也可以有利地影响纸产品的表面性能,例如表面对涂料、油墨和染料的接收性。
此外,分子结构的改变可以包括纤维素部分的平均分子量、平均结晶度、表面积、聚合、孔隙率、支化、接枝和相区(domain)尺寸中任一个或多个的改变。分子结构的这些改变可以反过来导致纤维材料所表现的物理特征的有利改变。这些改变详细论述于2009年4月3日提交的U.S.序列号12/417,707中,其的全部公开内容在此引入作为参考。
辐射可以在造纸工艺的一个或多个选定的阶段施加。在一些情形下,通过增加制备纸的纤维素纤维的强度,照射将改善纸的强度和抗撕性能。此外,用辐射处理纤维素材料可以对材料消毒,这可以降低纸促进真菌、霉菌等生长的趋势。通过选择使用的辐射的类型和/或施加的辐射的剂量,照射通常以受控和预定的方式进行,以提供对于特定应用的最优性能。
可以在以下情形中例如在制浆后和在将制浆的纤维混合成纸幅之前施加低剂量的电离辐射;将低剂量的电离辐射施加于湿纤维纸幅,在干燥期间或干燥后施加于纸幅,或者施加于经干燥的纸幅,例如在随后的处理步骤例如施胶、涂布和压光之前、期间或之后。通常优选的是当纸幅具有相对低的水分含量时将辐射施加于该纸幅。在图1所示的实例中,可以在干燥和精制期间,例如在施胶、干燥、压制和压光操作之间,或者在后处理期间进行照射,例如照射于成卷、切割卷(slit roll)或纸张形式的成品纸。
如上所述,在一些实施方案中,在生产工艺期间在多于一个点上施加辐射。例如,可以以相对高的剂量使用电离辐射以形成或帮助形成纸浆,之后以相对较低的剂量使用以改变纸的官能化。如果希望,可以在纸幅的选定区域向成品纸施加高剂量辐射,以形成局部弱化的区域,例如提供撕裂区。
作为实际问题,使用现有技术,通常最希望的是将照射步骤整合到造纸工艺中,或者在制浆之后并在将纸浆引入造纸机之前,在纸幅已离开造纸机之后,通常是在干燥和施胶之后,或者在纸幅加工成最终产品期间或之后。在一些情形下,可以照射成品或现有的纸产品,例如货币、艺术品或文件以标记产品。然而,如上所述,照射可以在该工艺中在任何期望的阶段进行。
照射以影响材料官能团
在用一种或多种电离辐射,例如光子辐射(例如X射线或γ射线)、电子束辐射或者用带正电或负电的比电子重的粒子(例如质子或碳离子)的照射处理后,纸变成电离化;即纸以可以例如用电子自旋共振光谱仪检测的水平包括自由基。在电离之后,可以使纸猝灭以降低电离材料中的自由基水平,例如使得自由基不再可用电子自旋共振光谱仪检测。例如,可以通过向电离材料施加足够的压力和/或将电离材料与和自由基反应(猝灭)的流体例如气体或液体接触而使自由基猝灭。可以使用多种气体,例如氮气或氧气,或者液体以至少帮助自由基的猝灭,以及将电离材料用期望的官能团官能化。因而,照射然后猝灭可以用于提供具有期望的官能团的纸浆或纸,所述官能团包括例如以下的一种或多种:醛基、烯醇基、亚硝基、腈基、硝基、酮基、氨基、烷基氨基、烷基、氯烷基、氯氟烷基和/或羧酸基。这些基团提高它们所存在的材料区域的亲水性。在一些实施方案中,在诸如涂布和压光的处理步骤之前或之后对纸幅照射并猝灭,以影响纸中和/或表面上的官能性,从而影响纸的吸墨性和其它性能。
图2说明了通过用电离辐射例如用足够能量的电子或离子将材料电离而对纤维材料预处理,以提供第一水平的自由基,从而改变纤维材料例如纸原料、纸前体(例如湿纸幅)或纸的分子和/或超分子结构。如图2所示,如果电离材料保持在大气中,它将被氧化至例如通过与大气氧的反应生成羧酸基的程度。由于自由基可以在照射后“存活”一定的时间,例如长于1天、5天、30天、3个月、6个月或者甚至长于1年,材料性能可能继续随着时间变化,因此这在一些情况下可能是不希望的。
通过电子自旋共振光谱检测经照射的样品中的自由基和这样的样品中的自由基寿命在Bartolotta等,Physics in Medicine and Biology,46(2001),461-471,以及Bartolotta等,Radiation Protection Dosimetry,Vol.84,Nos.1-4,pp.293-296(1999)中论述。如图2所示,可以将电离材料猝灭以使电离材料官能化和/或稳定。
在一些实施方案中,猝灭包括向电离材料施加压力,例如通过材料的机械变形,例如直接在一维、二维或三维上对材料机械压缩,或者向材料所浸没的流体施加压力,例如等静压。可以例如通过使纸通过辊隙(nip)而施加压力。在这样的情况下,材料自身的变形使得经常束缚在结晶相区中的自由基足够接近,以便自由基再组合或与另一基团反应。在一些情况下,压力的施加与加热同时进行,例如热量足以将材料的温度升高到电离材料的组分例如木质素、纤维素或半纤维素的熔点或软化点以上。加热可以改善材料中的分子流动性,这可以有助于自由基的猝灭。当使用压力进行猝灭时,压力可以大于约1000psi,例如大于约1250psi、1450psi、3625psi、5075psi、7250psi、10000psi,或者甚至大于15000psi。
在一些实施方案中,猝灭包括使电离材料与流体例如液体或气体,例如能够与自由基反应的气体,例如乙炔或乙炔在氮气中的混合物、乙烯、氯化乙烯或者氯氟乙烯、丙烯或者这些气体的混合物接触。在其它具体实施方案中,猝灭包括使电离材料与液体接触,例如可溶解于电离材料或者至少能够渗透到电离材料中并且与自由基反应的液体,例如二烯,例如1,5-环辛二烯。在一些具体实施方案中,猝灭包括使电离材料与抗氧化剂例如维生素E接触。如果希望,该材料可以包括分散于其中的抗氧化剂,并且猝灭可以来自于将分散于材料中的抗氧化剂与自由基接触。
用于猝灭的其它方法是可能的。例如,Muratoglu等的美国专利公开No.2008/0067724和Muratoglu等的美国专利No.7,166,650中描述的用于将聚合物材料中的自由基猝灭的任何方法可以用于猝灭本文所述的任何电离材料,所述文献的公开内容以它们的整体在此引入作为参考。此外,Muratoglu的任一文献中描述的任何猝灭剂(在上述Muratoglu的公开内容中描述为“敏化剂”)和/或任何抗氧化剂可以用于猝灭任何电离材料。
可以通过使用重带电离子增强官能化。例如,如果希望增强氧化,可以将带电氧离子用于照射。如果期望氮官能团,可以使用氮离子或者包括氮的任何离子。类似地,如果期望硫或磷基团,可以在照射中使用硫或磷离子。
在一些实施方案中,在猝灭后可以将经猝灭的电离材料用一种或多种另外的辐射剂量,例如电离或非电离辐射进行处理,和/或可以氧化用于额外的分子和/或超分子结构改变。
在一些实施方案中,在猝灭之前在惰性气体例如氦或氩的覆盖下照射纤维材料。
可以例如通过选择电离粒子的特定类型和剂量而控制官能团的位置。例如,γ射线往往影响纸中的分子的官能度,而电子束辐射往往优先影响表面的分子的官能度。
在一些情况下,材料的官能化可以与照射同时发生,而不是作为独立的猝灭步骤的结果。在这种情况下,可以以多种方式影响官能团的类型和氧化程度,例如通过控制覆盖待照射材料的气体,照射束穿过该气体。合适的气体包括氮气、氧气、空气、臭氧、二氧化氮、二氧化硫和氯。
在一些实施方案中,官能化导致在纤维材料中形成烯醇基团。当纤维材料是纸时,这可以增强纸对墨水、粘合剂、涂料等的接收性,并可以提供接枝点。烯醇基团可以帮助降低分子量,尤其是在添加的碱或酸的存在下。因而,这样的基团的存在可以帮助制浆。在成品纸产品中,通常pH足够接近中性,因而这些基团将不会造成分子量的有害的降低。
屏蔽
在一些情形中,可能希望仅照射和/或猝灭小面积的纸产品,例如以产生“水印”或者照射印刷在纸上的特定符号,例如货币上的“E”。在这种情形下,可以屏蔽纸产品的剩余部分,其将保持未标记。
如果将仅照射小部分,则剩余部分用射线不透过材料例如铅或其他重金属屏蔽。屏蔽应该具有足够的厚度以防止辐射通过,或者充分减少通过的辐射以防止标记。如果希望屏蔽特定的符号例如货币上的E,则纸产品应该与屏蔽对齐(registration)以使得待标记的符号与屏蔽中的开口对齐。用于这种屏蔽的技术是公知的,例如在半导体工业中。
如果将仅猝灭小部分,则纸产品的剩余部分可以在猝灭期间例如用抑制纸产品与猝灭中使用的液体或气体接触的材料屏蔽。
在流体中粒子束暴露
在一些情况下,纸或者其的纤维素或木质纤维素起始材料可以在一种或多种附加的流体(例如气体和/或液体)的存在下暴露于粒子束。在一种或多种附加的流体的存在下材料向粒子束的暴露可以提高处理的效率。
在一些实施方案中,材料在流体例如空气的存在下暴露于粒子束。例如,在加速器中加速的粒子可以通过输出口(例如薄膜,例如金属箔)耦合出加速器,通过流体占据的一定体积的空间,然后入射到材料上。除了直接处理材料,一些粒子通过与流体粒子(例如由空气的多种组分如臭氧和氮氧化物生成的离子和/或自由基)的相互作用而生成额外的化学物质。这些生成的化学物质也可以与该材料相互作用。例如,产生的任何氧化剂可以将该材料氧化。
在某些实施方案中,附加的流体可以在粒子束入射到材料上之前选择性地引入粒子束的路径。如上所述,粒子束的粒子与引入的流体的粒子之间的反应可以生成额外的化学物质,该化学物质与材料反应并可以帮助材料的官能化,和/或以别的方式选择性地改变材料的某些性质。该一种或多种附加的流体可以从例如供应管导入粒子束的路径。引入的流体的方向和流速可以根据期望的暴露速率和/或方向进行选择,以控制整个处理的效率,包括基于粒子的处理所产生的效果以及由于引入的流体动态生成的物质与材料相互作用而产生的效果。除了空气,可以引入离子束的示例性流体包括氧气、氮气、一种或多种稀有气体、一种或多种卤素和氢气。
冷却经照射的材料
在用电离辐射对如上所述的材料处理期间,尤其是在高剂量速率下,例如大于0.15Mrad每秒的速率,例如0.25Mrad/s、0.35Mrad/s、0.5Mrad/s、0.75Mrad/s或者甚至大于1Mrad/秒,材料可以保留大量的热量以使得材料的温度变得升高。尽管在一些实施方案中较高温度可以是有利的,例如当期望较快的反应速率时,但是有利的是控制该加热以便保持对电离辐射引起的化学反应例如交联和/或接枝的控制。
例如,在一种方法中,将材料在第一温度下用电离辐射例如光子、电子或离子(例如单个或多个带电的阳离子或阴离子)照射足够的时间和/或足够的剂量,以将材料升高到比第一温度高的第二温度。然后将经照射的材料冷却到第二温度以下的第三温度。如果希望,经冷却的材料可以用辐射例如用电离辐射处理一次或多次。如果希望,可以在每次辐射处理后和/或期间将材料冷却。
在一些情况下,冷却可以包括将材料与温度低于第一或第二温度的流体例如气体接触,例如77K或约77K的气态氮。在一些实施方案中甚至可以使用水,例如温度低于标称室温(例如25摄氏度)的水。
辐射类型
可以例如通过以下手段提供辐射:1)重带电粒子,例如α粒子;2)电子,例如在β衰变或电子束加速器中产生的电子;或者3)电磁辐射,例如γ射线、x-射线或紫外线。不同形式的辐射通过辐射的能量所确定的特定相互作用将纤维素或木质纤维素材料电离。
重带电粒子包括α粒子,其与氦原子核相同并且通过多种放射性核的α衰变产生,所述放射性核为例如铋、钋、砹、氡、钫、镭、多种锕系元素例如锕、钍、铀、镎、锔、锎、镅和钚的同位素。
电子通过电子速度的变化产生的库仑散射和轫致辐射而相互作用。电子可以通过发生β衰变的放射性核产生,所述放射性核例如为碘、铯、锝和铱的同位素。作为选择,电子枪可以通过热离子发射而用作电子源。
电磁辐射通过三种过程相互作用:光电吸收、康普顿散射和电子偶生成。主要的相互作用由入射辐射的能量和材料的原子序数决定。对纤维素材料中吸收的辐射有贡献的相互作用之和可以通过质量吸收系数表示。
电磁辐射细分为γ射线、x-射线、紫外线、红外线、微波或无线电波,这取决于它们的波长。
参见图3和4(区域R的放大视图),γ射线可以由γ线照射器10提供,γ线照射器10包括γ射线源408例如60Co颗粒、用于固定待照射材料的工作台14以及例如由多个铁板制成的贮藏库16。所有这些组件容纳在混凝土防泄露室(地下室)20中,该地下室在铅衬门26的远处(beyond)包括迷宫入口22。贮藏库16限定多个通道30,例如16个或更多个通道,这些通道使得γ射线源在它们的与工作台邻近的路线上通过贮藏库。
在操作中,将待照射的样品放置在工作台上。将照射器配置成递送期望的剂量速率,并将监视装置与试验区31连接。然后操作器离开防泄露室,穿过迷宫入口并穿过铅衬门。操作器操作控制板32,指示计算机33使用连接到液压泵40上的液压缸36将辐射源12提升到工作位置。
γ射线具有显著的穿透深度的优点。γ射线源包括放射性核,例如钴、钙、锝、铬、镓、铟、碘、铁、氪、钐、硒、钠、铊和氙的同位素。
x-射线源包括电子束与金属靶的撞击,所述金属靶为例如钨或钼或合金,或者压缩光源,例如Palo Alto,CA的Lyncean Technologies,Inc.商业生产的那些。
用于紫外线的源包括氘或镉灯。
用于红外线的源包括蓝宝石、锌或硒化物窗陶瓷灯。
用于微波的源包括速调管、Slevin型RF源或使用氢、氧或氮气的原子束源。
在一些实施方案中,将电子束用作辐射源。电子束具有高剂量速率(例如1、5或者甚至10MRad每秒)、高生产量、低防泄露(containment)和低束缚装置的优点。电子也可以在导致断链方面更有效。此外,具有4-10MeV的能量的电子可以具有5-30mm或更高,例如40mm的穿透深度。
电子束可以例如通过静电发生器、级联发生器、变压发生器、具有扫描系统的低能加速器、具有线状阴极的低能加速器、线性加速器以及脉冲加速器而产生。可以使用电子作为电离辐射源,例如对于相对薄的材料,例如小于0.5英寸,例如小于0.4英寸、0.3英寸、0.2英寸或小于0.1英寸。在一些实施方案中,电子束的各个电子的能量为约0.25MeV至约7.5MeV(百万电子伏),例如约0.5MeV至约5.0MeV,或者约0.7MeV至约2.0MeV。电子束照射设备可以从比利时Louvain-la-Neuve的Ion Beam Applications或San Diego,CA的TitanCorporation购买。典型的电子能量可以为1、2、4.5、7.5或10MeV。典型的电子束照射设备功率可以为1、5、10、20、50、100、250或500kW。典型的剂量可以取1、5、10、20、50、100或200kGy的值。
在考虑电子束照射设备功率规格时涉及的因素包括运行成本、资本成本、折旧和设备轨迹。在考虑电子束照射的暴露剂量水平时涉及的因素将会是能量消耗和环境、安全和健康(ESH)问题。发生器通常容纳在例如铅或混凝土地下室中。
电子束照射设备可以产生固定束或者扫描束。扫描束具有大扫描长度和高扫描速度可以是有利的,因为这将有效地替代大的、固定的束宽度。此外,可以获得0.5m、1m、2m或更大的可用扫描宽度。
在其中用电磁辐射进行照射的实施方案中,电磁辐射可以具有例如大于102eV,例如大于103、104、105、106或者甚至大于107eV的每光子能量(电子伏)。在一些实施方案中,电磁辐射具有104至107,例如105至106eV的每光子能量。电磁辐射可以具有例如大于1016hz、大于1017hz、1018、1019、1020或者甚至大于1021hz的频率。在一些实施方案中,电磁辐射具有1018至1022hz,例如1019至1021hz的频率。
可以用于将使用上述的源产生的离子加速的一种加速器为(可以从例如Radiation Dynamics Inc.获得,其现为比利时Louvain-la-Neuve的IBA的单位)。加速器1500的示意图显示于图5中。加速器1500包括注射器1510(它包括离子源)和包括多个环形电极1530的加速柱1520。注射器1510和柱1520容纳在被真空泵1600抽空的外壳1540中。
注射器1510产生离子束1580,并将束1580引入加速柱1520。将环形电极1530保持在不同的电势,使得当离子通过电极之间的间隙时被加速(例如,离子在间隙中被加速,而不是在电极中,在电极中电势是均匀的)。当离子在图5中从柱1520的顶部向底部行进时,离子的平均速度提高。相继的环形电极1530之间的间距通常是提高的,因而适应更高的平均离子速度。
在加速的离子已穿过柱1520的长度以后,经加速的离子束1590通过递送管1555耦合出外壳1540。选择递送管1555的长度以使得足够的屏蔽物(例如混凝土屏蔽物)可以位于与柱1520相邻的位置,将柱隔离。在通过管1555后,离子束1590通过扫描磁体1550。扫描磁体1550由外部逻辑单元(未示出)控制,该扫描磁体可以以受控的方式在垂直于柱1520的中轴线取向的二维平面中扫描经加速的离子束1590。如图5所示,离子束1590通过窗口1560(例如金属箔窗口或筛),然后被扫描磁体1550引导撞击到样品1570的选定区域上。
在一些实施方案中,施加到电极1530上的电势是例如通过DC电势源产生的静电势。在某些实施方案中,施加到电极1530上的电势的一些或全部是通过可变电势源产生的可变电势。大电势的合适的可变源包括放大场源,例如速调管。因此,取决于施加到电极1530的电势的性质,加速器1500可以以脉冲或连续模式运行。
为了在柱1520的输出端获得选定的加速离子能量,基于现有技术中公知的考虑因素选择柱1520的长度和施加到电极1530的电势。然而,值得注意的是,为了降低柱1520的长度,可以用多电荷离子代替单电荷离子。也就是说,对于带有两个或更多电荷的离子,两个电极之间的选定的电势差的加速效应大于对于带有1个电荷的离子。因而,任意离子X2+可以在比相应的任意离子X+更短的长度内加速到最终能量E。三电荷和四电荷离子(例如X3+和X4 +)可以在甚至更短的距离内加速到最终能量E。因此,当离子束1580主要包含多电荷离子物质时可以将柱1520的长度显著降低。
为了加速带正电的离子,选择柱1520的电极1530之间的电势差以使得图5中场强提高的方向为向下(例如朝向柱1520的底部)。相反,当加速器1500用于加速带负电的离子时,在柱1520中将电极1530之间的电势差反转,并且图5中场强提高的方向为向上(例如朝向柱1520的顶部)。向电极1530施加的电势的重新配置是直接的程序,使得加速器1500可以相对快速地从加速正离子向加速负离子转变,或者反之亦然。类似地,加速器1500可以快速地从加速单电荷离子向加速多电荷离子转变,并且反之亦然。
多种方法可用于生成适合于离子束的离子,所述离子束可用于处理纸或者起始的纤维素或木质纤维素材料。在生成离子后,它们通常在一种或多种各种类型的加速器中加速,并且然后导入以撞击在待处理的材料上。各种类型的加速器和离子束生成设备描述于美国序列号12/417,707中,其在上文引入作为参考。
剂量
在一些实施方案中,进行照射(使用任何辐射源或者辐射源的组合),直到材料接受至少0.05MRad的剂量,例如至少0.1、0.25、1.0、2.5或5.0MRad。在一些实施方案中,进行照射直到材料接受0.1-2.5MRad的剂量。其他合适的范围包括0.25MRad-4.0MRad、0.5MRad-3.0MRad,和1.0MRad-2.5MRad。
剂量越高,实现的官能化程度通常越高。
在一些实施方案中,以5.0至1500.0千拉德/小时,例如10.0至750.0千拉德/小时或50.0至350.0千拉德/小时的剂量速率进行照射。当希望高生产量时,例如在高速造纸工艺中,可以以例如0.5至3.0MRad/秒或者甚至更快的速率施加辐射,使用冷却以避免受照射的材料过热。
在其中照射涂料纸的一些实施方案中,纸涂料包括可交联的树脂,例如二丙烯酸酯或聚乙烯。在一些情况下,当纸被照射时树脂交联,这可以提供协同效应以优化纸的耐磨损性和其它表面性能。在这些实施方案中,将辐射的剂量选择得足够高以实现纸希望的官能化,即至少约0.25至约2.5MRad,这取决于材料,同时足够低以避免有害地影响纸涂料。剂量的上限将取决于涂料的组成变化,但是在一些实施方案中优选的剂量小于约5MRad。
在一些实施方案中,使用两种或多种辐射源,例如两种或多种电离辐射。例如,可以以任何顺序用电子束然后用具有约100nm至约280nm波长的γ射线和/或UV光处理样品。在一些实施方案中,用三种电离辐射源处理样品,例如电子束、γ射线和高能UV光。
识别标记的纸产品
通过确定纸的官能度,已经使用本文所述的方法标记的纸产品可与看起来类似的未标记的纸产品区分。这可以例如通过以下方式完成:使用红外分光计制备目标纸的IR扫描,并且将该扫描与标记的纸的“对照”IR扫描比较。例如,如果标记的纸被官能化以增加纸中羧酸基的数目,则将观察是否类似地标记的待测试的纸的IR扫描,将具有与对照IR扫描中的羧基峰基本相同高度的羧基峰。
测试纸是否被或未被标记的选择性方法包括AFM、CFM和ESR。
纸添加剂
造纸工业中使用的很多添加剂和涂料中的任何一种可以添加或施加到本文中所述的纤维材料、纸或任何其它材料和产品中。添加剂包括填料,例如碳酸钙、塑性颜料、石墨、硅灰石、云母、玻璃、玻璃纤维、二氧化硅和滑石;无机阻燃剂例如三水合氧化铝或氢氧化镁;有机阻燃剂例如氯化或溴化有机化合物;碳纤维;以及金属纤维或粉末(例如铝、不锈钢)。这些添加剂可以增强、扩充或改变电学或力学性能、相容性能或者其它性能。其它添加剂包括淀粉、木质素、香料、偶联剂、抗氧化剂、遮光剂、热稳定剂、着色剂例如染料和颜料、聚合物例如可降解聚合物、光稳定剂以及杀生物剂。代表性的可降解聚合物包括聚羟基酸,例如聚丙交酯、聚乙交酯以及乳酸和乙醇酸的共聚物、聚(羟基丁酸)、聚(羟基戊酸)、聚[丙交酯-共-(e-己内酯)]、聚[乙交酯-共-(e-己内酯)]、聚碳酸酯、聚(氨基酸)、聚(羟基链烷酸酯)类、聚酐类、聚原酸酯和这些聚合物的共混物。
如果希望,可以加入各种交联添加剂。这类添加剂包括自身可交联的材料和将有助于纸中的纤维素或木质纤维素材料交联的材料。交联添加剂包括,但不限于,木质素、淀粉、二丙烯酸酯、二乙烯基化合物和聚乙烯。在一些实施方案中,这类添加剂以约0.25%-约2.5%,例如约0.5%-约1.0%的浓度包括。
当包括添加剂时,它们基于干重量计算可以以低于约1%至高达约80%的量存在,基于纤维材料的总重量。更典型地,该量为约0.5重量%至约50重量%,例如约0.5%至约5%、10%、20%、30%或更多,例如40%。
可以将本文中所述的任何添加剂封装,例如喷雾干燥或微囊化,以便例如保护添加剂在操作期间免遭热或水分。
合适的涂料包括用于在造纸工业中提供特定表面特征的很多涂料中的任何一种,所述特征包括特定的印刷应用所需的性能特征。
如上所述,多种填料可以包括在纸中。例如,可以使用无机填料例如碳酸钙(例如沉淀碳酸钙或天然碳酸钙)、霰石粘土、正交粘土、方解石粘土、菱形粘土、高岭土、膨润土、磷酸二钙、磷酸三钙、焦磷酸钙、不溶性偏磷酸钠、沉淀碳酸钙、正磷酸镁、磷酸三镁、羟磷灰石、合成磷灰石、氧化铝、二氧化硅干凝胶、金属铝硅酸盐络合物、钠铝硅酸盐、硅酸锆、二氧化硅或这些无机添加剂的组合。填料可以具有例如大于1微米,例如大于2、5、10或25微米或者甚至大于35微米的颗粒尺寸。
纳米级填料也可以单独地或者与任何尺寸和/或形状的纤维材料组合使用。填料可以为例如颗粒、片或纤维形式。例如,可以使用纳米尺度的粘土、硅和碳纳米管以及硅和碳纳米线。填料可以具有小于1000nm,例如小于900、800、750、600、500、350、300、250、200或100nm或者甚至小于50nm的横向尺寸。
在一些实施方案中,纳米粘土是蒙脱土。这样的粘土可从Nanocor,Inc.以及Southern Clay products获得,并且已描述于美国专利No.6,849,680和6,737,464中。粘土可以在混合到例如树脂或纤维材料之前进行表面处理。例如,可以对粘土进行表面处理以使得其表面为离子性的,例如阳离子或阴离子性。
也可以使用聚集或凝聚的纳米级填料,或者组装成超分子结构例如自组装超分子结构的纳米级填料。聚集填料或超分子填料在结构上可以是开放或封闭的,并且可以具有多种形状,例如笼状、管状或球状。
木质素含量
本文所述的纸产品可以包含木质素,例如高达1、2、3、4、5、7.5、10、15、20或者甚至25重量%的木质素。该木质素含量可以是用于造纸的木质纤维素材料中存在的木质素的结果。作为选择或者另外,如上所述,可以将木质素加入纸中作为添加剂。在这种情况下,木质素可以作为固体,例如作为粉末或其它颗粒材料加入,或者可以溶解或分散并以液体形式加入。在后一种情况下,木质素可以溶解于溶剂或溶剂体系中。溶剂或溶剂体系可以是单相或两相或更多相的形式。用于纤维素和木质纤维素材料的溶剂体系包括DMSO-盐体系。这样的体系包括例如DMSO与锂盐、镁盐、钾盐、钠盐或锌盐的组合。锂盐包括LiCl、LiBr、LiI、高氯酸锂和硝酸锂。镁盐包括硝酸镁和氯化镁。钾盐包括碘化钾和硝酸钾。钠盐的实例包括碘化钠和硝酸钠。锌盐的实例包括氯化锌和硝酸锌。任何盐都可以是无水的或水合的。盐在DMSO中的典型含量为约1至约50重量%,例如约2至25重量%、约3至15重量%或者约4至12.5重量%。
在一些情况下,木质素在照射期间将在纸中交联,进一步增强纸的物理性能。
纸类型
纸经常通过重量表征。对于纸所称的重量是一令500张的重量,其尺寸是在纸切割成销售给最终消费者的尺寸之前的各种“基本尺寸”。例如,一令20lb,81/2x 11”的纸的重量为5磅,因为它已从更大的纸张切成四片。在美国,印刷纸通常为20lb、24lb或者至多32lb。封皮纸通常为68lb和110lb或者更多。
在欧洲,重量以每平米的克数表示(gsm或者只是g)。印刷纸通常为60g至120g。任何重于160g的纸被认为是制卡片的纸料。因此,一令的重量取决于纸的尺寸,例如一令A4(210mm×297mm)尺寸(约8.27”x 11.7”)纸的重量为2.5千克(约5.5磅)。
纸的密度为从薄纸的250kg/m3(16lb/ft3)到某些特种纸的1500kg/m3(94lb/ft3)。在一些情况下,印刷纸的密度为约800kg/m3(50lb/ft3)。
本文中所述的方法适合用于所有这些品级的纸,以及其它类型的纸例如瓦楞纸板、卡纸和其它纸产品。本文中所述的方法可以用于处理用于例如任何以下应用中的纸:用作邮票;用作纸币、银行票据、有价证券、支票等;用于书籍、杂志、报纸和艺术品;用于包装,例如卡纸、瓦楞纸板、纸袋、信封和盒子。该纸可以是单层或多层纸,或者可以形成层压制品的一部分。标记可以在商业上使用以显示购买、使用或其它事件。例如,标记可用于“取消”邮资,或者显示购买物品的地点和/或时间。
纸可以由任何期望类型的纤维制成,包括源自木材和回收纸的纤维,以及源自其它来源的纤维。植物纤维材料,例如棉、大麻、亚麻和稻,可以单独使用或者彼此组合使用或者与木材衍生的纤维组合使用。其它非木纤维来源包括但不限于甘蔗、甘蔗渣、稻草、竹子、洋麻、黄麻、亚麻和棉。可以将广泛种类的合成纤维例如聚丙烯和聚乙烯,以及其它成分例如无机填料加入纸中,作为赋予期望的物理性能的手段。在用于特殊应用例如纸币、精致文具、铜版纸和需要特定强度或美学特征的其它应用中,可能希望在纸中包含这些非木纤维。
纸可以在印刷之前或之后照射。
工艺用水
在本文中所公开的方法中,无论何时在任何工艺中使用水时,它可以是灰水,例如市政灰水,或者黑水。在一些实施方案中,灰水或黑水在使用之前消毒。消毒可以通过任何期望的技术来完成,例如通过照射、蒸汽或化学消毒。

6.权利要求5的方法,其中猝灭在选择为与照射的纸产品中存在的自由基反应的气体存在下进行,和气体与自由基反应。
7.权利要求1的方法,其中所述方法还包括用射线不透过材料屏蔽所述个别部分之外的纸产品的剩余部分。
8.权利要求1的方法,其中所述个别部分为水印或符号形式。
