Hydrocarbon gas generator and burner apparatus. The present invention relates to an apparatus for generating gas by means of hydrocarbons and for using the gases generated for heating furnaces etc.
The hydrocarbon used can be, for example, kerosene or else the various fluid hydrocarbons which are commonly used in lamps and fireplaces burning petroleum oils, etc.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention applied to a furnace for heating rivets and intended, for example, for the use of kerosene.
In this drawing, Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the apparatus; Fig. 2 is a side view of the same device; Fig.3 is a vertical section, on a larger scale, along 3-3, fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a plan of the generator and burner apparatus; Fig. 5 is an end elevation; Fig. 6 is a cross section, on a larger scale, along 6-15, fig. 4; Fig. 7 is a section, on a very agran die scale, of a gas zr adjustment.
The generator-burner apparatus shown is for using kerosene and has a U-shaped retort 1.which may be a detachably attached gas pipe, and is supported outside a room (the elongated hollow cast iron 2, the interior of which forms a burner chamber C, which is provided with an inlet port, 2a, closed on its upper side, near one of its ends, and connected with a gas mixer tube, 4, which will be discussed later.
The cast iron part 2 is of rec tangular section and it is arranged in a horizontal position; it has a <B> V, </B> 2 '' shaped channel, extending all around room 2; this channel is intended to be filled with an ignition fuel, such as alcohol, to start the burner at the start.
The retort 1 is fixed to the part 2, outside thereof, by flanges 11, fixed to this part by screws 1b, so that the retort is supported at a certain distance from the channel 2b '; the retort is maintained at a distance from the walls of the part 2 by vertical ribs 2r, formed on the outer walls of the cast iron part 2.
In the side wall and the inner end wall of the part 2, it is formed, in places adjacent to the retort 1 and in immediate proximity to the latter, (the many fine holes 2e, of the burner, very close together others as seen in Figs 3 and 6, through which gases escape from chamber C and are burnt to heat the retort, as will be explained below.
One of the ends of the retort 1 is connected, by an elbow 1e, to the upper end of a supply pipe 1dr, arranged vertically, which can be formed of ordinary gas pipe and which is connected with the 'one end of a tee, the, to the rod of which is connected the outlet end of a valve box, 1f, containing a needle valve that can be operated at the hub of a handle 1st. To the inlet of this needle valve box is connected a pipe 1b leading to a kerosene tank 7. A n drain valve li is connected to the lower end of the tee so as to allow emptying. when desired, retort 1 and feed pipe 1d.
The other end of the retort 1 is connected, by the reducing elbow 1j with one of the ends of a short pipe 1k, the upper end of which is connected to a small tee II (shown at much larger scale in Fig. 7), arranged in horizontal plane and closed at the external end by a 1m 'plug, while the internal end is closed by the removable nozzle In.
This nozzle 1n is provided with a central hole 1 which is very fine and preferably cylindrical and uniform in section, so that the hot gases, generated by means of the kerosene in the retort, will escape and) a fine jet, but with force, through port 1 in the open end, adjacent, of a mixing tube 4, which can be made of gas pipe and is shown supported in a horizontal position follows, and above part 2, and directly opposite the orifice 1 of the nozzle and in line with it.
As shown, the mixing tube 4 is provided, at a point remote from the nozzle, with a tee 4a, the rod of which is connected to the upper end of a short tube 4 ''. the lower end of which is firmly fitted and engaged in the inlet opening 2a of the chamber C This tu bulure 4b serves, at the same time, 1o to support the mixing tube 4, rigidly above the part 2 and thereon and, 2 to establish a communication between the mixing tube and the chamber C.
The discharge end of the mixing tube 4 is connected, by an elbow 4e, to a down pipe 4'i, which leads the gas mixture into the; heating chamber b 'of an oven 5, for heating the rivets, which will be described later and' -, Lu 'the top of which the generator-burner is supported.
T_Ta cover plate 2 is placed on top of the part 2 and extends beyond the edges thereof, approximately as far as the rim 2b. The edges of this 2 "plate are curved from top to bottom on the sides and at the inner end of the piece towards the sides and the end of the retort in the shape of <B> U, </B> 1 and (see fig . 3 and (i) the sides and the folded end of the plate 211 tend to confine the flames emanating from the burner or ignition rim 2b and from the jets 2e in the immediate vicinity of the retort 1 and to concentrate on this retort the heat of those flames.
The cover plate 2n is provided with an opening 2 to allow it to be easily placed on top of the part 2 after the tubing P has been connected to it and it can be loosely secured, in position on the part 2, by a <B> <U> '? P. </U> </B> screw
The amount of gas passing through the. chamber C by the mixing tube 4 must be in proportion to the diameter and capacity of the retort 1 and of the mixing tube 4 and, to allow the use of a single size of part 2, in the construction of the any of the number of generator-burners having different heating capacities, an interchangeable ring seal 4e is used, due to the rod of the tee 4a being placed and which rests on the upper end of the tee. the tubing 4b.
Drain part of the gas mixture from mixing tube 4, through pipe 4e, into chamber C of room 2 and, coming out of the small holes 2e, ignite so that the resulting flames keep the horn bare 1 at a temperature high enough to completely reduce to the gaseous state the kerosene admitted therein, the gases escaping with very great force from this retort through the small hole 1 of the nozzle 1n.
The kerosene is supplied under pressure and uniformly to the pipe 1'd, the quantity thus supplied being regulated by the needle 1g, and a very small opening of this needle ensures a sufficient supply of kerosene to the retort during the practical operation of the furnace. The retort should not be flooded or overfed with kerosene.
As the pipe 1d is arranged vertically, it forms for the kerosene, between the valve or needle and the retort, a sufficient flywheel to compensate for any fluctuation in the supply; the back pressure of the retort gases acts on the ke rosene column in this tank and helps control the feed and although the gases in the retort are highly heated, tank 1d remains cold.
When the gas-burner gerépate apparatus is used concurrently with a cooking or heating oven, the gases leaving the mixing tube 4 could be conducted to the nozzles by pipes.
To start the appliance, fill the ignition channel 2b with alcohol or other suitable inflammable materials or oil and ignite this alcohol etc .; the resulting screaming flame rapidly heats the eornue until gases are generated in it cr sufficient to produce such a flammable mixture in mixing tube 4 and supply gas to jets 2e to maintain the retort temperature , after the ignition fluid has burned off.
The inlet valve 1g must be opened slightly to allow the reservoir V to fill with kerosene and a small quantity flows into the path 1 in which this kerosene is rapidly reduced to a gaseous state by heat and, as gas cannot escape backwards, they exit the bare horn 1 through the pipe 1k, and escape in a fine jet and with force, through the orifice 1 of the nozzle, into the open end of the mixing tube 4; the gas jet draws air with it into this tube and the air and gas which mix in it form a very combustible mixture.
Part of this mixture passes into chamber C and, escaping through 2e holes, is ignited by the ignited ignition fluid and helps. heat the retort and after that maintains the temperature of the retort after the ignition fluid has burned off. The main mass of the flammable mixture passes at the point of use. As shown in the drawing, it passes, through pipe 4d, into the heating chamber h 'of an oven <B> it </B> to heat the rivets, 5, in which it is lit and where it is burns without smoke or odor.
The rivet heater 5. which is shown in the drawing has outer metal side walls, 51, and a metal top plate 5i '. This top plate has sui, the tiri of the sides, an extension, 5 '', on which the.
cast-iron piece 2 is partially supported, so that the discharge pipe, 4s, extending from the mixing tube, can enter the chamber I 'through openings made in the upper wall of said hearth. This fireplace is lined with a thick lining of refractory masonry. 5th, which covers the sky, the walls, the sides and the bottom of the hay-, a, except for a door opening made in the facade to give access to the heating chamber.
This opening is closed by a door: 5-, folding back under the action of its own weight and suspended, so as to be able to slide, on a rod 5f supported on brackets 5h secured to the end walls of the oven.
Pipe 4d discharges gas from top to bottom into the upper part of chamber F, openings being formed in the furnace top plate and in the refractory masonry liner for the passage of pipe 4d which may be surrounded by Inside these openings by a gasket 4i of heat-insulating material, such as asbestos, to reduce the heating of the pipe, which is also protected by the fact that the gases which burn are of a non-oxidizing nature.
The oven 5 is shown provided with a metal base plate 5r and supported on the top plate 6, with a suitable metal frame having legs 6a, formed by angles and reinforced by tie rods 6b ', P and spacers. 6th. On these is mounted the reservoir 7 which is provided with a pressure gauge 7a and an air intake valve 7b, arranged to be connected with a suitable source of compressed air, such as a hand pump, not shown, or the usual compressed air pipe installed in buildings where the fireplace is used.
This tank 7 is also provided with a filler pipe 7e and a fuel outlet pipe 7d which extends to the bottom of the tank and may be provided, at its internal end, with a suitable filter or strainer. (not shown) and, at its outer end, a valve, 7e, to the outlet of which is connected the kerosene supply pipe 1r.
In the construction shown, the walls of the chamber F of the hearth and, in particular the bottom of this chamber, against which the flammable outgoing gas stream strikes, ensure an intimate mixture, therefore a complete combustion of this mixture. In operation, the furnace can be kept at a uniform high temperature and the objects placed in it can be heated to the desired temperature, but the combustion is so perfect that the flame is non-oxidizing and the metal rivets for example, placed in the oven and heated with incandescent can be maintained at this temperature without oxidation.
It is advantageous to choose the relative proportions of some of the parts of the apparatus suitably to obtain a good practical operation of the apparatus. In the apparatus shown in the drawing, the reservoir pipe 1d is approximately 15 cm long between its point of connection with the needle and its point of connection with the elbow 1c and it has an internal diameter of approximately 6 mm. Retort 1 is approximately 1 cm internal diameter. The pipe 1'k has about 3 mm internal diameter; the orifice 1 of the nozzle 1n corresponds approximately to the n 67 of the gauge B. and S. for cylindrical holes; the gas mixing tube 4 has about 31 mm internal diameter and the discharge pipe 4 \ j is the same size.
The tubing 4b should have about 17 '= mm internal diameter or, if it is of larger diameter, it can be provided, as shown, with a gasket or throttle ring, 4th, of variable diameter, for example approximately 17 mm internal diameter. The <B> Il </B> needle will have a point of about 15 degrees and 3 mm in diameter and the holes drilled in the cast iron part 2 will be about 3 rrrm in diameter and will be drilled very close to each other, so as to offer numerous jets constituting an almost continuous sheet of flame.
These holes are preferable to slits because the gases do not burn as well, or as evenly, coming out through slits as they do through small holes.
With the given proportions, the apparatus, if ordinary kerosene is used, after it is suitably started, operates continuously and gives a very hot non-oxidizing flame. When applied to an oven, as shown, it will keep the oven at a high temperature sufficient to soften the ruae @@ nnerir:
refractory said bottom of the chamber F @ of the furnace which is most directly exposed to the gases arriving through the pipe 41r.
