No 3243449.
EMI0002.0018
/a <SEP> benzène <SEP> Sélectivité

<tb> 1 <SEP> 92,0
<tb> 3 <SEP> <B>91,5</B>
No 3243449.
No 2515279.
Continuous process for the preparation of boric esters of cycloalkanols A major improvement in the oxidation of cycloalkanes to cycloalkanols and cycloalkanones has consisted in carrying out the oxidation in the presence of a boron compound, such as metaboric acid or boron oxide. In fact, in the oxidation of cyclohexane, the selectivity to cyclohexanol and to cyclohexanone is increased by about 200% by the addition of boron compounds. While this improvement in selectivity is a significant advance, even better selectivity is desired, as a more selective reaction decreases waste production.
For example, when the oxidation reaction products are dehydrogenated to phenol in a plant producing 18 million kg of phenol per year, a 20 / o increase in selectivity results in a saving of $ 50,000 in costs. raw material costs.
The term <c cycloalkane as used herein encompasses substituted and unsubstituted cyclic alkanes, for example cyclohexane, methylcyclohexane and dimethylcyclohexane.
In accordance with the invention, it has been found that further improvements in selectivity can be obtained by carrying out the oxidation reaction in the presence of critical amounts of benzene-type compounds.
A subject of the present invention is therefore a continuous process for the preparation of boric esters of cycloalkanols, by oxidation of a cycloalkane or of an alkyl-cycloalkone with a gas containing molecular oxygen in the presence of a. boron compound which esterifies with said cycloalkanol, characterized in that, after initiation of the reaction, the oxidation is carried out in the presence of 0.01 to 50% by weight of benzene or of an alkyl benzene, the said percentages being related to the cycloalkane or to the alkylcycloalkane.
The term <B> </B> compound of the benzene type is understood here to mean benzene and alkyl-substituted benzenes. Ire preferably, these compounds have boiling points between 80 and 1450 C, as is the case for benzene, toluene and xylene. Benzene is the most advantageous compound in the case of the oxidation of cyclohexane.
The proportions of compounds of the benzene type which are less than the critical range give poorer selectivities, while the higher proportions abruptly inhibit the oxidation reaction.
The finding that the presence of definite percentages of benzene-like compounds promotes the selectivity of the oxidation is surprising and unexpected. It was known that benzene generally tends to decrease the amount of free radicals present in a liquid system, thus inhibiting oxidation reactions. For example, in the paraffin oxidation process described in U.S. Patent <B> Ne </B> 2721180, it is noted that it is desirable to remove the aromatics substantially completely. Even more characteristic is U.S. Patent No. 2,931,834, which relates to the oxidation of cyclohexane.
This patent indicates that the concentration of aromatic compounds should not be more than 0.2% by weight, and that even greater purity is desirable.
At the initiation of the continuous process, the critical proportions of the benzene-type compound may be between about 0.01 and 0.8% by weight, preferably between 0.1 and 0.5% by weight. weight, based on cycloalkane. It may even be present in a proportion which can reach 5 0 / o by weight, provided that the initiators, defined below, are introduced into the reaction mass. In addition to improving the selectivity, these concentrations of benzene-type compounds make the use of highly refined raw materials superfluous.
As examples of such initiators, there may be mentioned hydroperoxides, organic peroxides, ce tones and aldehydes, such as di-t-butyl peroxide, methyl ethyl ketone peroxide, t-butyl hydroperoxide, etc. acetaldehyde and cyclohexanone, as well as mixtures thereof. The proportion of initiator present is 0.00001 to 0.01% by weight, preferably 0.0001 to 0.001% by weight, relative to the weight of the starting hydrocarbon. Other initiators may be employed, for example certain compounds which readily form peroxides when in contact with a gas containing molecular oxygen under the conditions of the reaction.
The starting cycloalkane can be prepared by hydrogenation of a benzene-type compound and the hydrogenation conditions are preferably chosen such that the hydrogenation product contains the desired proportion of the ben-zene-type compound. The hydrogenation can also be carried out so as to convert almost all of the benzene-type compound to the cycloalkane. In this variant, the unoxidized cycloalkane is returned to the oxidation reactor.
Since the benzene-type compound does not react during oxidation, its concentration continuously increases in the cycloalkane recycle stream. By mixing in the desired proportions the recycle stream, containing a relatively high concentration of the benzene-type compound, and the cycloalkane stream exiting the hydrogenation zone, containing a relatively low concentration of the benzene-type compound, it It is easy to maintain a concentration of the benzene-type compound of not more than 4% in the raw material admitted to the oxidation reactor.
After some time, it becomes necessary to withdraw part of the recycling stream to remove benzene-type compound which has accumulated, in order to maintain the desired concentration of said compound. After purification, this withdrawn stream can be returned to the hydrogenation stage, where the cycloalkane acts as a diluent.
It will be appreciated that, within the limits mentioned above, a continuous process can tolerate higher percentages of benzene than in starting a reaction without an initiator. This is particularly important, because once the reaction has started, or when an initiator is employed, it is advantageous to be able to allow the benzene-like compound to reach higher concentrations in the raw material. In addition to the significant improvement in the selectivity obtained by this operation, this discovery allows the use of less pure raw materials and requires less withdrawal of the recycle stream.
Since the components of this stream are usually separated by distillation, and since this distillation is difficult due to the similarity of boiling points, for example of cyclohexane and benzene, the work of distillation is markedly simplified in this process.
The single figure of the appended drawing illustrates, by way of example, a particular implementation of the method according to the invention.
Benzene and cyclohexane are introduced into a hydrogenation zone 1 through lines 4 and 5, respectively. A draw-off stream, mainly containing cyclohexane with 0.560% benzene, is returned to the hydrogenation zone through line 6 and constitutes about 10% of the starting material. Preferably, this draw-off stream is previously stripped of its impurities. The weight ratio of cy- clohexane to benzene entering the hydrogenation zone 1 is 80 to 20. The hydrogenation zone 1 is maintained at 135 () C and under a relative pressure of 5.3 kg / cm2, and it contains a nickel on kieselguhr catalyst.
The hourly space speed of the liquid, referred to benzene, is 5 h-1. The hydrogen enters the reactor via line 7. Under these conditions, the stream leaving the hydrogenation zone consists essentially of cyclohexane with 0.05% by weight of ben zene. This stream passes through a pipe 8, it joins the cyclohexane recycling stream 9, and enters an oxidation reactor 2. The proportions of the recycling stream 9 and of the reactor effluent passing through the pipe 8 are adjusted. so that the cyclohexane supplied to the oxidation reactor contains 0.5% benzene. The oxidation is carried out in the presence of metaboric acid. A stream containing 8% oxygen and 9210 / o nitrogen is introduced into the oxidation reactor through line 10.
The material leaving the oxidation reactor 2 is sent to a cyclohexane separation tower 3 via line 11. Unconverted cyclohexane, containing approximately 0.56% of benzene, forms the top fraction exiting via line 9 and is recycled as described above. The reaction mixture, consisting mainly of boric esters of cyclohexanol, exits through line 12. This mixture is hydrolyzed, and cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone are isolated, as described in US Pat. No. 3243449. An analysis of the mixture of cyclohexanol and of cyclohexanone thus obtained shows that it contains 88.9% / o of cyclohexanol and 5.7% of cyclohexanone.
<I> Example </I> Cyclohexane and a suspension of metaboric acid in cyclohexane are continuously admitted into the first stage of a three-stage continuous reactor in series. A gas containing 8'0 / o oxygen is introduced into each stage. The temperature is 1650 C, the total relative pressure is 8.8 kg / cm2 and the dwell time is approximately 1 hour, divided equally between the floors. The reaction is carried out until 651 of oxygen is absorbed. The selectivity of the reaction, depending on the benzene content in the starting cyclohexane, is shown in the table below.

Limits of temperature and pressure, types and proportions of boron compound, etc., are described in U.S. Patent No. 3243449.
