Waterproof watch case The object of the present invention is a waterproof watch case comprising a middle part formed of a thin outer shell of a hard metal, covering at least the visible parts of said middle part, and a body of soft material. , injectable, conforming to the shape of said shell; said case further comprises a bottom fixed to said caseband and for this having in the vicinity of its periphery an annular sleeve, a part of which is engaged in a groove presented by the internal face of said caseband.
The casting or injection of plastic material or of a soft metal inside a thin hard metal shell is a particularly economical manufacturing process for parts of boxes and in particular for middle parts. Said thin metallic outer shell gives these middle parts the appearance of usual middle parts, made entirely of the same metal, while the interior, and in particular the internal faces of said middle parts, have the properties of the material which forms the body. .
If the materials used to form the body of said middle parts have, on the one hand, the advantage of simplifying the manufacture and, on the other hand, that of ensuring a tight seal by simple contact with a part of the back, they also have the disadvantage of compromising the tightness of the fastening of the back to the middle, if not this fastening itself. These materials have a tendency to deform permanently, so that, after opening and closing the case several times, the parts of the middle part stressed by these operations no longer tighten the corresponding parts of the back in a suitable manner.
The aim of the present invention is to remedy this drawback. For this, a thin hard metal ring, with a diameter slightly greater than the diameter of the bottom of the groove made in the internal face of the caseband for the notch fixing of the caseback, is embedded in the material forming the body of the case. middle part, in the vicinity of its internal face, at the height of said groove.
Two embodiments of the box forming the subject of the present invention are shown, by way of example, in partial axial section, in the accompanying drawing of which FIGS. 1 and 2 respectively represent the first and the second embodiment.
The box shown in fig. 1 comprises a middle part 1, which is composed of a thin shell 2 of relatively hard metal (brass, stainless steel, gold), in which is placed a body 3 of softer material (synthetic material, injected cast iron, etc.). Said middle part is arranged so that the shell 2 covers all the visible faces thereof, while the internal faces of this middle part are formed by the surface of the body 3.
There are several processes for forming the shell 2 and for injecting therein the material forming the body 3. In each of them, the injected material is brought in the liquid state or at least pasty, inside the shell. 2, in order to be able to exactly match its shape.
In the box shown, a thin metal ring 4, preferably made of stainless steel, is placed inside the shell 2 before injection. This ring 4 is held coaxially with the shell 2.
It can, for example, be mounted on a cylindrical core movable axially and forming part of the injection mold. After a first phase of the injection operation, this core is withdrawn so as to release said ring and to allow a second phase of said operation, during which the ring 4 is embedded in the body 3. Its diameter is slightly larger than that of the inner face

of the middle.
It forms a rigid and practically undeformable wall, which is located in the immediate vicinity of the lower part of the internal face of the middle part, part which has, on the other hand, a groove 5. Like the rest of the middle part, this groove 5 is formed when the material forming the body of the middle part 1 is supplied, by a part specially designed for this purpose of the mold used for the manufacture of the middle part. This means that the middle part does not undergo any retouching or any subsequent machining.
A back 6 is notched to the caseband 1. It has an annular sleeve 7 located in its internal face, near its periphery. In the outer face of this sleeve 7 is formed a groove 8 of rectangular profile, in which is engaged a sealing gasket 9 made of synthetic material, the outer face of which is convex and is arranged so as to engage in a notch in the throat 5, when. the back is fixed to the caseband.
The bottom 6 also has a peripheral rim 10, which extends outside the sleeve 7, so as to partially cover the underside of the middle part. This rim therefore hides the seal between the internal edge of the shell 2 and the internal face of the body of the middle part, while making it possible to grasp the bottom to separate it from the middle part.
In the second embodiment (Fig. 2), the middle 11 is formed in the same way as the middle 1 of the fi-. 1. It comprises in particular a thin shell 12, which covers all the visible faces of the middle part, and a body 13, injected, which forms the body of this middle part. However, while, in the first embodiment, the body of the middle part could also be made of metal, it must here be of synthetic material.
A thin metal ring 14 made of stainless steel is embedded in the body 13, near the lower part of the internal wall of the middle part. In said lower part of the wall of the middle part, located inside the ring 14, a groove 15 is formed, the bottom of which is rounded. The bottom 16 has a sleeve 17, the outer face of which forms a bead 18, which engages in the groove 15. Unlike the first embodiment, there is here no plastic ring interposed between the sleeve 17 and the groove 15. The sleeve 17 is entirely metallic.
Thus the bead 18, by engaging in the groove 15, establishes contact between a metal part (18) and a synthetic material part (13). As in the first embodiment, the back 16 has a peripheral rim 19 which extends outside the sleeve 17 and which covers the underside of the caseband so as to hide the seal between the shell and the body. in synthetic material, while allowing the back to be gripped to separate it from the caseband.
The advantages of the cases described are as follows. It has already been noticed that it is difficult, if not impossible, to achieve perfect sealing in watch cases between two metal surfaces. applied against each other. On the other hand, the application of a plastic surface against a metal surface makes it possible to easily achieve a tight seal without the pressure exerted on the two surfaces being very great.
In the second embodiment, the body of the middle part being made of plastic material, sealing can be ensured by simply pressing the outer face of the bottom bead against the face of the groove which is made of plastic. It is therefore not necessary to insert a seal between these two parts. On the other hand, it is necessary for the notch fixing to be done with a certain pressure both to ensure the fixing and to ensure the sealing.
Thanks to the ring 14, this pressure remains maintained, even after several openings of the box. A great thickness of plastic material would indeed risk deforming over time, possibly by settling, so that the pressure of the back bead in the groove of the middle part would no longer be sufficient. On the other hand, the presence of the ring 14, which leaves: between it and the bottom of the groove 15 only a small thickness of synthetic material, prevents the latter from deforming permanently, which maintains the fixing pressure at a constant value.
In the first embodiment, on the other hand, if the body of the middle part is metallic, it is necessary that the part pressing against it is made of plastic material, in order to ensure perfect sealing. This is the reason why the rim 7 has a groove 8 in which a ring 9 is engaged. Even with a metal middle body, the ring 4 is essential. Indeed, the metal then forming the body of the middle part is soft.
It is a metal which is easily injectable, such as, for example, the alloys containing aluminum and zinc, known under the name of injected cast iron. However, these metals have only a very low capacity for elastic deformation, so that the pressure ensuring the sealing and the fixing of the base may decrease over time as a result of a permanent deformation of the metal of the body of the build.
The ring 4, placed at a small distance from the internal face of the caseband, inside the material forming the body 3, decreases the plastic deformation capacity of the material forming the bottom of the groove 5 and, thereby, prevents the pressure between the back and the caseband from decreasing, even after several consecutive openings and closings of the case.
Finally, it should be noted that the trim 9 provided in the first embodiment can also be of interest in the case where the body of the middle part is itself made of synthetic material. Depending on the material used for this body, it may in fact be advisable to use a lining 9 made of another synthetic material.
