The machine shown comprises a frame 1 in which are rotatably mounted two parallel shafts 2 and 3 of turrets 4 and 5. A cigarette hopper 6 automatically feeds three rows of cigarettes in turn in each of the equidistant compression cavities 7, arranged at the periphery of the turret 4.
The turrets 4 and 5 turn step by step in synchronism and in the opposite direction as indicated by arrows, so that each group of cigarettes contained in a compression cavity 7 is clamped therein and brought opposite one of a series of 8 equidistant hollow mandrels, arranged at the periphery of the turret 5.
The turret 5 rotates in the dextrorsum direction, step by step, and the workstations where the mandrels stop at the end of each movement are designated by the numbers from I to XII. When the turret 5 passes from the XII station to the VII incins station, each mandrel 8 is surrounded by a sheet and a label, and the sheet and the label are folded and folded back and glued at one end to form an open flexible pocket. at one end. When a pocket-holder mandrel reaches station IX, a compression cavity 7 is opposite this mandrel and a tight group of cigarettes is transferred from this compression cavity 7 inside the mandrel carrying the pocket by a piston 9 (fig. 2) animated by a back and forth movement.
A strip B formed by a layer of paper covered with metal wound on a coil 11 is brought between rollers 12 and 13, then between rollers 14 to a shear 15. The shears cut a juxtaposed sheet A in the strip. to the flat face of a mandrel 8 at station XII of the turret 5.
During its passage between the rollers 12 and 13, the strip B is cut obliquely by pressure on one of its edges to form converging slots a and a ', by blades 16 and 17 (Fig. 3) fixed on the roller 12 and cooperating with the elastic periphery of the roller 13. The roller 13 is driven from a shaft 18 (FIG. 1) by a chain 19 passing over a chain wheel 20 fixed to the shaft 13 'of the roller 13. A toothed wheel 21 fixed to the roller 13 meshes with a toothed wheel 22 fixed to the roller 12 next to the blades 16 and 17.
One of the rollers 14 is driven by the roller 13 via chain wheels 23 and 23 'and a chain 23 "(Fig. 2). The rollers 14 are rotatably mounted in an oscillating frame 24 which pivots. around the axis of the roller 13 so as to appropriately adjust the continuous advance of the band B and the oscillating movement of the frame 24 to effect a momentary stop in the movement of the band B with respect to the shear 15. The shear 15 cuts the strip B at a predetermined location with respect to the converging slits a and a ', so that when folding the sheet A over a mandrel 8, the slits a and a' are located on opposite sides of the mandrel.
As the mandrel, to which a sheet A has been fed (fig. 1 and 16), advances in the dextrorsal direction, the sheet A is wound around the mandrel and the parts at one end of the mandrel are folded back to form a closed envelope. an extremity.
A sheet provided with advertising prints C is wound around the envelope to form a sleeve which preserves the shape of the envelope. The shell and sheath together form a flexible pouch open at one end in place on the mandrel.
The in. rolling of the sheets A and C on the mandrel and their folding to form the pocket between the stations XII and VII are carried out by the jaws of the grippers and of the pushers, not shown.
By the time a mandrel reaches station VIII, an open pocket has been completely made and the adhesive used to glue the liner seams is dry, so that at station IX a tight group of cigarettes can be threaded into the mandrel. maintaining the pocket.
A thin tape of cellulose acetate P ', provided with a thermoplastic adhesive layer on one of its faces, is wound on a roll P "carried by a spool 25 (Figs. 1 and 2) rotatably mounted on a bracket 26 mounted. on a housing 27. The housing 27 is mounted in an adjustable manner on an arm 28 having a base 29 cut out to be able to be adjusted on the bearing 2 'of the shaft 2 and bolted to it.
The tape P 'is wound with the thermoplastic surface facing towards the interior, so as to minimize the length of said surface exposed to the atmosphere during operation or shutdown of the machine.
The tape P 'is fed (fig. 1, 4, 9) from the roller P "on a tensioner roller 30, through a guide 31 and between a slotted feed roller 32 and a feed roller 33, covered. of rubber and comprising an eccentric part, as will be seen later.
The rollers 32 and 33 advance the tape P 'at a constant speed over a shearing table 34 (fig. 4, 7, 8) which has an edge 35 which cooperates with an oscillating shear blade 36 which cuts the tape P' transversely with respect to its longitudinal edges to form a pulling tab P at about the same time as one of the angles of the latter is gripped by jaws 37 and 38 of pliers (fig.
4 and 8) of the transfer mechanism which turns the pull tab upside down and places it against the edge of the envelope of a pocket on a mandrel 8. The edge of the tape P 'is guided between the jaws of the gripper by a spring guide 39.
The pulling tongue transfer mechanism (fig. 1, 4, 6, 8, 9) comprises a disc 40 fixed to a hollow shaft 41 and provided with three peripheral bosses 42 each of which has a fixed jaw 37 which is integral with it. . Each movable jaw 38 is complementary to a jaw 37 which it covers, and it forms part of a lever 43, U-shaped, articulated to a boss 42 by a head pin 44. In the branch of each lever 43 opposite to its jaw 38, is rotatably mounted the shaft 45 'of a roller 45 which is placed in the plane of oscillating discs 46 and 47 adjacent.
Projecting cams 46 'and 47' provided on the peripheries of the discs 46 and 47 cooperate with the respective rollers 45 to oscillate the levers 43 and open the jaws 38 when the latter are in the desired positions. to grip and release the pull tabs P. The jaws 38 are normally held in the closed position by the action of springs 49 attached to studs 50 fixed in the disc 40, and which exert a pull on the shafts 45 'so as to rotate the lever 43 mounted on the shaft 44, in the desired direction to close the jaw 38.
The disk 46 has a split hub 51 by means of which it can be clamped in an adjustable manner on an oscillating shaft 52 concentric with the hollow shaft 41 and passing therein. The disc 47 has an opening large enough to receive the internal extension of the hub 51 and it can be clamped in an adjustable manner on the disc 46 by bolts 54 which pass through arcuate slots made in the disc 46 (fig. 4). . It is thus possible to adjust the cams 46 'and 47' in a precise manner with respect to each other and with respect to the other mechanisms.
The disc 40 rotates in synchronism with the turret 5 so that when a mandrel 8 approaches the station XI and stops there, a pair of jaws 37, 38 carrying a pull tab P are placed at the center. -above one side of the mandrel 8 such that one end of the tongue P is substantially opposite the free edge of the envelope of the pocket carried by the mandrel. The other end of the pull tab P is held by the jaws out of contact with the label C, while part of this tab is stuck to the marginal part of the casing between the slots a and a ',
by the action of a heated oscillating presser finger 55 (fig.
9). The heated end of the presser finger 55 presses the tab P until the thermoplastic surface thereof is softened and sticks the tab
P to the envelope.
Immediately before the next movement of the turret 5, the end of the finger 55 is raised and the pocket on which the pull tab is glued is brought to station XII. At station XII (FIG. 3), a piston head 56 advances so as to push the cigarettes contained in the mandrel 8 to the bottom of the pocket which is placed on the mandrel. The piston 56, continuing its movement through the mandrel, pushes the cigarettes out of this mandrel, and the pressure exerted by the cigarettes on the bottom of the bag detaches the latter from the mandrel and leads it, filled with cigarettes to a chute. 57.
Oscillating edge folding fingers 58 and 59 at the top and bottom of chute 57 fold back the edges of the casing that extend beyond the edge of label C on the narrow sides (fig.
3) and a new sheet A is then fed to the mandrel from which the pocket has just been driven out, the free end of the tongue P is held by a pressure plate 60 (FIG. 16). A folding element 61 (fig. 2) then advances to fold the part of the edge of the envy loppe which contains the slit a against the already folded edges, and the pocket is then pushed along the chute 57 so that the part the edge of its envelope containing the slot a 'comes into contact with the folding edge 61' of the chute 57 (Fig. 20) and is folded by it.
The pull tab P and the part of the folded edge to which it is fixed are therefore partially covered by the flaps formed by the end closure. These flaps are then fixed in their folded position by a sealing strip S (fig. 21, 22 and 23) fixed to the sheath C and placed so as to cover the slots a and a 'by its edge.
The various elements for making and installing the pull tab (fig. 2, 3, 5, 6, 7) are driven from the shaft 13 'by means of a chain wheel 62 and a chain 63 to a chain wheel 64 mounted in an adjustable manner on a hub 65 keyed so as to be able to slide on a shaft 66 rotatably mounted in bearings 67, 67 '(fig. 6) of the housing 27. The chain 63 is tensioned by means of a tensioner roller 68 mounted rotativent on an oscillating shaft 69.
On the shaft 66 (fig. 6, 7, 9, 10, 14) is keyed a straight toothed wheel 70 engaged with a toothed wheel 71 keyed on a shaft 72 rotatably mounted in bearings 73 and 74 of the housing 27. A Right toothed wheel 75 fixed on the shaft 72 meshes with a toothed wheel 76 rotating t on a stud mounted in a boss 77 of the head 27. On the toothed wheel 76 is fixed, concentrically t to it, a right toothed wheel 78 which meshes with a toothed wheel 79, which meshes with a toothed wheel 80 (fig. 7, 11) fixed on a shaft 81 rotatably mounted in a boss 82 of the housing 27.
The shaft 81 comprises a recess 83 provided with a transverse pin 84 intended to removably receive the forked end of a shaft 85 of the split feed roller 32 mentioned above.
The shaft 85 is mounted in ball bearings housed in a bracket 88 projecting from the housing 27. The complementary rubber-covered roller 33 rotates by means of ball bearings mounted on a shaft 87 having an eccentric part 88 mounted. rotatably in the console 88, in which it is held by a head 89.
By virtue of a handle 90 fixed to the outer end of the shaft 87, it is therefore possible to vary the pressure between the rollers 32 and 33 to ensure the desired continuous friction advance of the tape P 'on the shear plate 34.
On the shaft 66 is also fixed a drum cam 91 (fig. 6, 7, 9, 10, 12 and 13) provided with a boss 92 cooperating with a roller 93 carried by an arm 94 of a shaft 95 rotatably mounted. in. a housing bearing 27 (fig. 4, 7, 12). An arm 98 subjected to the action of a spring is mounted on the shaft 95 and connected by a connecting rod 97 and an arm 98 to a shaft 99 subjected to the action of a spring; the above-mentioned shear 36 is attached to this shaft 99. Therefore, a rotation of the shaft 66 which causes the continuous advance of the tape P 'also ensures the intermittent operation of the shear blade 36 for cutting the tape P 'in pull tabs P.
On the shaft 72 is keyed a toothed wheel 100 (fig. 6, 7, 9 and 14) which meshes with a toothed wheel 101 which can rotate freely on the shaft 52. A bevel gear 102 is fixed to the toothed wheel 101. and meshes with a bevel gear 103, rotating on an axis 104 projecting on a hub 105 freely mounted on the shaft 52. The bevel gear 103 meshes with a bevel gear 108 cut on the hollow shaft 41 to which it transmits a movement. intermittent. The hub 105 comprises a radial arm provided with a toothed wheel 107 in the form of a sector which meshes with another similar toothed sector 108 fixed to the arm of a hub 109 freely rotating on the shaft 72. The hub 109 carries an arm 110 provided with a roller 111 housed in a groove 112 'in the form of a cam, cut in the face of a disc 112 keyed on the shaft 66.
The rotation of the cam disc 112 causes the toothed sector 108 to oscillate so as to cause the axis 104 and the pinion 103 to oscillate around the axis of the shaft 52, first of all in the direction of the rotation of the toothed wheel. bevel 102, then in the reverse direction Therefore when the axis 104 moves the pinion 103 in one direction, no movement is transmitted from the bevel gear 102 to the bevel gear 106 or to to the shaft 41 and to the disc 40 connected to this shaft.
But, when the shaft 104 moves the pinion 103 in the other direction, the bevel gears 102 and 103 rotate the bevel gear 106, the shaft 41 and the disc 40, at high speed so as to make the. com piémentaires jaws 37 and 38 from one position to another, namely from the initial clamping position of the jaws shown in the upper part of FIGS. 4 and 8 to that shown on the left in FIGS. 4 and 8 and up to the delivery position of the jaws, shown below. filg. 4 and 8.
On the toothed wheel 70 is fixed a cam disc 113 (FIG. 6) comprising a peripheral boss 114 for moving a roller 115 capable of rotating on the end of an arm 116 keyed on the end of the shaft 52. The rotation of the shaft 66 therefore causes the shaft 52 and the discs 46 and 47 to oscillate and causes the camles 46 'and 47' to oscillate in front of the respective rollers 45 for controlling the pairs of jaws 37 and 38.
On the shaft 66 is also fixed a drum cam 117 (fig. 6, 7, 9, 15) cooperating with a roller 118 which can rotate on an arm 119 which is fixed on a shaft 120 rotating in the bearings of the housing 27 (fig. . 15). On the shaft 120 is fixed an elbow arm 121 subjected to the action of a spring, this arm being connected by a connecting rod 122 to an arm 123 fixed to a shaft 124.
The aforementioned pressure finger 55 has bosses 55 'rigidly mounted on the shaft 124. The pressure finger 55 contains an electric heating element 125 heating the finger so that the thermoplastic surface of the tab P is softened when the pressure is applied. finger tip 55 presses on it.
The operation of the machine described is as follows. The sheet for forming the envelope cut from the strip B is brought to an entry position on a mandrel 8 at station XII. The converging slots a, a 'with which this sheet is provided are cut during the passage of the strip from the reel 1 1 to the entry position at the station XII. This sheet is used for the formation of the pocket during t movement of the mandrel 8 around the axis of the turret 5, through positions I to VII inclusive. After the cigars have been introduced into the mandrel carrying the pocket at station IX, the draw tab P is attached, after which each pocket is ejected, filled with cigarettes from its mandrel.
The mechanism for making and installing the pull tab is actuated in synchronism with the advance movement of the sheets A and the movements of the turret 5 via the chain 63 which rotates the shaft 66 constantly. in the same way. The shaft 66 rotates the feed roller 32 constantly through the pieces 70, 71, 72, 75, 76, 78, 79, 80, 81, 84, 85. While the tape P 'is continuously advancing , it is cut intermittently by the shear blade 36 which oscillates under the action of the shaft 66 through parts 91, 93, 94, 95, 97, 98 and 99.
At the same time, or immediately before severing a pull tab P from the tape
P 'of the roller, the tongue elst clamped between the pair of jaws 37 and 38, the latter of which opens to receive the tongue under the action of the oscillating movement of the cams 46' and 47 'acting on a roller 45. This movement oscillating is effected from the shaft 66 through the parts 113, 114, 115, 116, 52, 46, 47.
When a jaw 38 closes on a pull tab P, the disc 40 rotates step by step to turn the tab over and move it in a direction transverse to the length of a pocket placed on a mandrel 8 between the ends of the tab. this mandrel and in such a way that its edges b and b '(fig. 8), which formed the longitudinal edges of the tape P', are parallel to the edge which surrounds the opening of the pocket and that the cut edge b " of the tongue is perpendicular to the edge surrounding the opening of the pocket.
These movements are carried out from 17shaft 66 via parts 70, 71, 100, 101 and 102 and via parts 112, 111, 110, 109, 108, 107, 105, 104, 103 , so that the parts 106, 41 and 40 receive an intermittent movement which is in synchronism with the cam movement 46 ', 47' and with that of the turrets 4 and 5.
While a tab P is held by pliers, facing the side of a pocket on a mandrel 8, the shaft 66 acts via the parts 117, 118, 119, 120, 121, 122, 123, 55 'to bring the heated finger 55 into pressure contact against the portion of the tongue P adjacent to the opening of the pocket, while the opposite end of the tongue is kept spaced from the pocket.
The bag is then ejected, filled with cigarettes, is folded, and provided with the sealing strip and the outer casing, so that a package similar to that shown in FIG. 22.
When the top of the outer casing is detached, the tab P is pulled out and the folded edge of the casing to which it is attached is unfolded along its fold adjacent to the top of the sleeve C. This unfolding of the edge folded pulls the flaps from under the edge of the sealing strip S and unfolds the flaps along their folds adjacent to the upper edge of the sheath C, so as to form a chute capable of being folded back, as shown in FIG. 22, so as to allow easy extraction of a cigarette.
CLAIMS
I. A method of packaging articles, in particular cigarettes, characterized in that by means of a sheet cut from a strip, a pocket is formed by folding having an open end and a bottom, which is formed into a tab. pulling from a ribbon by cutting the latter transversely to its longitudinal axis and fixing this pulling tab on the pocket in such a way that the cut edge of said tab is perpendicular to the edge of the open end of said pocket.
