<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>
<Desc/Clms Page number 15>
<Desc/Clms Page number 16>

"Bag binding machine"
The present invention relates generally to improvements in machines for closing flexible bags such as polythene bags which are widely used for the packaging of various products such as foodstuffs and bakery articles. . More particularly, the invention relates to improvements and new closing techniques applied to general types of machines known in the old art.
Generally speaking, the present type of machine functions to receive bags, containing a
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
product, the neck portions of which are open and for bringing these necks together and closing by the application to the latter of fastening means, all at a high production rate.
In accordance with the prior art, it has been adopted practice to keep bag collars closed by applying adhesive tape thereto and then adhering the ends of applied tapes to the opposite sides of the collars. This form of fastening, although suitable for keeping the bags closed, has the disadvantage that the ribbons are relatively difficult to open at the start and to reapply by hand between samples taken from the contents. of the bag.
A subsequent improvement has been to replace the adhesive tape with plastic clips similar to split pliers to receive bag necks gathered together and removable and reapplied to bag necks between partial uses of the packaged product.
The present invention has been conceived with the desire to have a form of closure which can be removed from the bag and then reapplied to it last, more easily and more conveniently than the adhesive tape or clamp forms which are used. previously used.
It has been found more convenient to hold sao collars with a twistable tape of a material capable of maintaining its twisted condition. Accordingly, as used herein, the term "tape" is to be understood as meaning a suitable tape-shaped material capable of maintaining a twisted state around.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
bag collars. It has been found that suitable for this use is a ribbon-like material consisting of paper or plastic and which can be internally reinforced, for example by a metallic thread.
More particularly, the object of the invention is to provide an improved machine having essentially the following characteristics: (1) means for advancing the bags with an open neck towards a binding station; (2) means at this station, in the bag advancement path, acting to completely collect the bag collars; and (3) means, at the binding station, operating in a predetermined synchronous relationship with the advancement of the bag and with the compact folding of the neck for wrapping with the binding tape and for twisting said tape around of the collar.
According to the present invention, there are provided at the binding station means such as wheels with neighboring peripheries, with a locking means operative to stop the bag necks having advanced between the wheels and to fold them into a compact form and it is further provided at the binding station is a rotary winder which functions to receive cut lengths of tape and to twist them around the bag necks, all in a closely synchronized relationship with the advancement of the bag; with the movement of the locking means bringing the said means into the path of the bag and out of this path, and it is finally provided at the binding station
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
a cutting mechanism which acts to cut predetermined lengths of tape.
Another object of the invention relates to the relationship between the tape projected in the bag advance path and the effect of the bags themselves in producing the initial lining of the lengths of tape around the bag necks. immediately before the twisting operation.
In order to achieve this aim, provision is made to advance the ribbon in the flexible state in the path of the bag so that it can be deflected by the bag as it advances towards the blocking means, all of this in the process. such that the movement of the bag produces an effect of doubling the tape. Provision is further made to accommodate the free ends of the doubled tape in such a way that they are accessible to be linked together by the twisting mechanism.
The invention has various features and additional objects such as arranging the tape supply in such a way that it functions only in the presence of bags to be sealed. All this, together with the foregoing objects, will be understood more fully with the aid of the detailed description which follows and the representation, in the accompanying drawings, of an embodiment of the invention given at. as an example.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a view showing the machine in end elevation, part of the casing having been torn off to show the interior structure; Figure 1A is a fragmentary view in

The machine is shown as comprising a casing 20 containing a vertical support 21 (see Figures 1 and 6) which is used au'montage of certain shafts, according to the description which will be given later. Preferably, although it is not necessary, the entire machine is supplied with energy by a single motor 22 which drives, by means of a belt 23, a pulley 24, keyed to the main shaft 25, which is driven. - stretches 4 through bearings 26, casing 20 and support 21. Shaft 25 carries an end chain wheel
27 which controls, by means of a chain 28 and a chain wheel 29, a combination cam and a conveyor shaft 30.
In Figures 1 and 6, in particular, it can be seen. that the bag conveyor assembly, generally designated by the numeral 31, is shown as comprising a fixed table 32 'with a smooth surface having along its inner edge a vertical plate 33

guide of the neck of the bag, the table being interrupted or split at 34 to accommodate fasteners 35 which connect a succession of equally spaced push bars 36 to an endless chain 37 controlled by a chain wheel 37a mounted on the 'tree 30.
Therefore, during the operation of the machine, the push bars 36 move at a uniform speed to advance the bags B containing the product along the surface of the table, with the bags being placed on their side faces, their sides. neck B 'being unfilled and open. As can be seen, the bags advance with uniform spacing, at a speed which is in a fixed relation to the rotational speed of shafts 25 and 30, so that the operation of other parts of the machine apart from . @ of these trees occurs according to a predetermined relationship with the advancement of the bags and their arrival at the binding station which will be described later.
On the support 21 is mounted a shaft 38 which is controlled from the shaft 25 by means of chain wheels 39, 40 and a chain 41, this shaft serving to mount and rotate two wheels 42 and 43, axially spaced. On the support 21 is mounted a second fixed shaft 44 which carries a bracket consisting of arms 45 connected by a connecting piece 46 (see fig. 6) and inside which is carried a pair of wheels 47, 48. which can turn, but which are not controlled, these wheels being in close peripheral proximity of '? controlled wheels 42 and 43, or in contact with them.
One or the other of these pairs of wheels or both pairs can
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
wind have a rubber surface or the like, so as to prevent the sao from slipping.
According to Figures 6, 9 and 12, there is provided, mounted on the casing 20, a horizontal shaft 50, the outer end of which carries a locking element which is designated as a whole by the reference 51 and which oscillates with the tree or around the tree. On this element is rigidly fixed an arm 52 which is moved by a cam acting at the notch of the resistance of a spring 53. Element 51 is shown as comprising a body 54 which comprises at 55 (see Fig. 5) a shoulder for locking the bag beyond which the body carries an extension 56 forms a passage opening 57 through which the cord or ribbon passes through + in the manner which will be described later.
The area generally designated by the numeral 58 and accommodating the end portions of the locking element, the contacting surfaces of the wheels 42-43 and 47-48, as well as the end of the twisting device which will be described later, is referred to as the bag binding station since it is at this location that the neck of the bag is gathered and that the previously cut length of tape is twisted around it.
The arm 59 is also used to mount an oscillating crank, consisting of the arms 59 and 60 (see fig. 9), the latter arm being articulated at 61 with a connecting rod 62 which, in turn, is articulated at 63 with a connecting rod 64 fixed at 65 to a body or cylinder 66 of the twist.
The shaft 30 carries a pair of cams 67 and 68, the first of which is engaged by a roller 69 of the arm 52
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
of the locking element while the surface of the cam 68 is attacked by a roller 70 carried by the arm 59.
Therefore, during a complete rotation of the shaft 30, the locking element 54 oscillates around the shaft 50 between the extreme high position of Figure 9 and the extreme lower position of Figure 3. At the same time and in In the operating relationship which will be described later, the cam 68 moves the arm 59 and the body of the twist 66 between the oscillation limits, lower and upper, which correspond to Figure 9 and Figure 12.
The body or cylinder 66 contains a rotatable twist shaft 71 which carries at its outer end a frustoconical friction cone 72 and an arm 73 (see fig. 7) which is connected to the spring 74, the arm 73 being able to rotate with the twist in response to the command which will be described later and the spring 74 serving to re-establish the normal or inactive oscillation position of the twist when the command is interrupted. As can be seen in particular in Figures 5,14 and 15, the twist shaft 71 has one end which is flat at 75 and towards the end of that end the shaft has an opening at 76 of. ribbon passage and an end hook 77.
As regards the twist control, the shaft 25 (fig. 1) carries a fixed pulley 80 which controls by means of a belt 81 a pulley 82 mounted on the shaft 83 which can rotate in bearings 84 (see fig. 6) and which carries a chain wheel 85. The chain wheel 85 controls by means of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
chain 86 a chain wheel 87 wedged on the shaft 88 which is supported in the support 89 mounted on the side of the casing 20.
The shaft 88 carries a frictional frustum 90 which can be engaged by the like friction member 72 in the position of Fig. 12 to transmit the twisting twist rotation to the twist shaft 71. In this case, the position of Figure 3, the friction element 72 and the friction element 90 are not in contact so that the rotation of the twist shaft is stopped in a predetermined rotational position by the action of the spring 74 to properly locate the end opening 76 of the shaft for the reception of the tape, as will appear later.
The support 89 supports a second shaft 91 carrying at its end a brush 92 to which a rotational movement is communicated by the shaft 83 through the pulleys 93 and 94 which carry the belt 95. The brush 92. aims to straighten the parts of the neck of the bag as they approach the binding station. Consequently, according to figure 6, when the bags perform an advancing movement communicated to them by the conveyor, the open necks in B @ nnent below the brush 92 which, by its routing in the same manner. indicated, tends to smooth @ @e generally to flatten the necks of bags.
If we now consider the tape feed, and firstly Figure 3, we see that a reel 96, carrying for example a strip 97 of laminated plastic material which contains a stiffening metal wire 98 (see fig. 8) is mounted on a support 99,
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
a suitable braking device 100 being used to limit the rotation of the reel in such a way that the tape is fed without slack in the tape. Coming from the unwinder 96, the tape passes over a grooved pulley 101 and it then goes down, i.e. towards the binding station, passing through a feed and cut mechanism which is generally designated by the reference 102.
As can be seen in FIG. 8, the tape 97 passes downwardly through a cavity 103 formed in a member 104 arranged vertically and this in a manner allowing the free lower end of the tape to pass through the cavity. cavity 76 formed in the twist and through the opening 57 formed in the locking element 54, as can best be seen in FIG. 9.
The tape is fed intermittently to the binding station, in predetermined equal lengths, by the wheel 105 carried on the shaft 106 which also carries a chain wheel 107, controlled by the chain 108 which is carried by the chain wheel 109 wedged on the shaft 30 and which also passes over an idler chain wheel 110 mounted on the shaft 111. The position occupied by the chain wheel 107 with respect to 4 the direction of movement of the chain consequently makes turn the wheel 105 clockwise, observing Figures 3, 9 and 12. The wheel 105 has a pad corresponding to a circular sector, the extent of which is equal to the lengths of the individual ribbons to be cut.
The pad is made of rubber or other material that will not slip against the tape.
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
Element 104 contains a cavity 113 within which is a pressure roller 114 which is carried by the lower ends of a pair of links 115 which are hinged at 116 to support 104 and whose ends The upper arms are hinged at 117 with the solenoid shaft 118. Normally, or when the solenoid is not energized, the links 115 are held by the spring 119 in the position, shown in Figures 3 and 12, in which the roll 114 is drawn back and is therefore not in pressure contact with the tape 97.
Solenoid 118 is suitably connected by its conductors 120 with a mercury switch 121 which is carried by the underside of a bar 122 (see Fig. 6) hinged at 123 and normally projecting through a slot 124. , provided in the table 32, for a distance such that a bag B which advances lowers the bar and closes the switch 121 to energize the solenoid 118. However, the bag pushers 36 avoid the bar 122 and do not act. not on her. Consequently, the solenoid is in a state such that it produces the cooperation of the roller 114 with the feed wheel 105 by advancing the tape towards the binding station, only by the presence on the conveyor. a bag capable of closing the switch 121.
As a result, ribbon feeding does not occur when the machine is running without bags or during any interval of conveyor operation during which a bag may be missing.
As can be seen better in the figures
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
8 and 9, there is provided, mounted inside the support 104, the upper end of a knife 126 which is split below at 127 to receive the periphery of the wheel 105. The lower end of the knife carries a blade 128, which can be moved from the outer ribbon passage position, shown in Figure 10 to the cutting position shown in Figure 11, in which the blade 128 comes in the immediate vicinity of the lower surface of support 104. Considered longitudinally. the knife 126 normally assumes the deflected position shown in Figures 9 and 10, the position in which it is remote from the support 104.
The actuation of the knife to cut the ribbon results from the knife being attacked by a roller 129 carried by the wheel 105. Thus: The rotation of the wheel brings the roller against the knife next to its slot 127 to deflect the knife by overcoming the elasticity of the latter, towards the cutting position of the tape, shown in FIG. 11.
The operation of the machine will be understood by considering the succession of operations on a bag B which begins by passing below the brush 92 which straightens the neck. The conveyor advances the bag, the neck of which is directed along the guide 33, so that the front edge of the bag enters between the pairs of wheels 47-48 and 42-43, as can best be seen in the figure 9. Just before the bag B 'reached the throat of the wheel, the locking element 54 was raised according to the cam 67 and the end of the twist was raised according to the cam 68, to
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
receive the tape 97 through the opening 76 of the twist and the opening 57 of the locking member.
The corresponding positions of the parts are shown in Fig. 18 which shows the beginning of the feeding of sections of tape. The locking element and the twist then lower to the respective positions shown in Figs. 10 and 11, in which positions the locking shoulder 55 is brought into the path of the neck of the bag, these lowerings. carrying out at the same time as the feeding of the tape downwards to its final position.
When it passes between the wheels 47-48 and 42-43, the neck of the bag is flattened so that it is reduced to the thickness of its material and the front edge of the bag is pushed against the locking element 45. As the wheels continue to turn, they gradually advance and fold the neck of the bag compactly between the locking shoulder, as shown in Figures 10 and 11. At this time, one can observe that the edge of the bag is in contact at the beginning with the tape which hangs down from the locking shoulder, and at about the middle of the length of tape to be cut, the cut point being determined by the cutting deviation of the knife 126 produced by the roller 129 in the manner explained above.
According to Fig. 11, the completion of the compact folding of the neck of the bag takes place at about the same time as the cutting of the tape or shortly before said cutting, all in such a way that the tape is found lined around the gathered neck of the bag, part 97a of the ribbon being received inside
<Desc / Clms Page number 15>
the opening 57 of the locking member while the other part 97b of the tape is held within the opening 76 of the twist.
The oame 68 then operates to rotate the twist to the position shown in Figure 13, where the strands of the tape are brought into contact with each other, while the hook 77 is placed at an angle. certain height below the lower strand 97a of the tape. As the twist performs its downward pivoting, the friction control members 70 and 92 contact each other, causing the twist to rotate and with respect to the core as shown in the figures. 14 and 15, in order to twist the ribbon a certain number of turns, sufficient to secure the grip of the gathered bag neck (see fig. 16).
The cam 68 then produces an upward release of the twist, which stops its rotation, and the cam 67 causes the locking element 54 to pivot downwards, to the position of FIG. 17, out of the path of the roller. neck of the bag so that the latter can be advanced by the conveyor from the binding station.
With regard to the ribbon supply, the presence of the bag on the conveyor has excited the solenoid 118 so that the latter presses the Roller 114 towards the ribbon. Therefore, starting with the state shown in Fig. 18, the commencement of the ribbon feeding occurs when the pad 112 of the feed wheel rotates to a point opposite the tape. roller 114, the friction contact, which continues, of the roller against the band producing the advance-
<Desc / Clms Page number 16>
ment ae the latter over a length which corresponds to the extent of the buffer.
The operating cycle ends when the locking element is restored to its elevated position following the removal, in accordance with figure 17, of the bag. Cam 67 then rotates the locking element. to the position shown in Figures 9 and 18 for receiving a new length of tape and then brings the element down to the locking position shown in Figures 10 and 11 '.
