<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

Method and apparatus for wrapping cylindrical objects.
The present invention relates to an improved method and apparatus for wrapping cylindrical objects, in particular cylinders of gelatinous or plastic mine explosives or other plastics or semi-plastics which are delicate in handling. Currently, gelatinous blast cylinders are wrapped manually, or the gelatinous material is extruded into pre-prepared cylindrical cases. It has also been suggested to wrap plastic explosive cylinders in paper by means of a machine where a sheet of paper lying flat and stationary is picked up by a plastic explosive cylinder rolling on this sheet.
For the machine to work, the grip must be
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
occurs between the cylinder and the edge of the sheet that it first meets on its path, and if the cylinder is not itself made of a sufficiently sticky substance it must be covered with an adhesive.
The main aim of the present invention is to provide a method and an apparatus for wrapping cylindrical objects, the application of which to the packaging of gelatinous or plastic mine explosives avoids the drawbacks of the methods listed above, in particular the slowness of packaging by hand, the disadvantages of the extrusion process in pre-made cylindrical cases (prior preparation of the cases, limited scope of the process), and the use of an adhesive.
It should also be noted that conventional gelatinous or plastic blasting explosives are not tacky enough to produce the adhesion of waxed paper or the like generally used to wrap them.
In accordance with the preferred form of the present invention, the cylindrical articles are wrapped by entraining them together with wrapping sheets of the desired size and shape, at suitable intervals in succession in the same direction along the substantially horizontal web. - zontal of an endless conveyor which changes direction and goes downwards at a suitable point, so that the end of the wrapping sheet protrudes from the horizontal part of the conveyor belt.
The cylindrical objects are fed in such a way that a single object is stopped at this point by one of several driven rollers, this roller being located near the conveyor belt. Immediately; .after, another driven roller comes to stand behind the cylindrical object which is trapped
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
in this way and to which a rotational movement is imparted by the driven rollers. The wrapping sheet is then driven by the conveyor and it passes under the roller which came to be placed behind the cylindrical object, and under this object itself, the protruding edge of the sheet is raised by one of the driven rollers. and the sheet wraps around the cylindrical object.
The parts of the sheet extending on either side of the ends of the wrapped article are then folded inwards and closed by folding and pressing devices.
Two of the driven rollers then move to release the wrapped object which is discharged along the sloping part of the belt by the movement of the belt.
The apparatus will be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figures 1, 2 and 3 are diagrams showing the succession of movements of the rollers which perform the wrapping operations. The drawings show three wrapper rollers, which is the preferred number in practice, but more could be used.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation showing the general arrangement of a machine according to the invention.
Figures 5, 6 and 7 are details of the devices for closing the ends of the package.
Fig. 8 is a schematic front view taken looking in the direction from which the object is fed.
An endless belt 1 having a width equal to the length of the cylindrical object to be wrapped and driven at a suitable constant speed, passes over a roller 2 rotating freely on the shaft 23, and then runs downwards.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The driven roller 3 is carried by arms 6 and 16 while the rollers 4 and 5 are carried by arms 7 and 20, and these rollers are driven by the flexible or cardan transmission shafts 24 and 29, as well as by a .other shaft not shown, which drives the roller 3. The arms shown oscillate around a common shaft 8, but this feature is not essential and the shafts could also be arranged so as to oscillate on separate shafts. The oscillating movement of the arms 6, 16, 7 and 20 around the shaft 8 is obtained by means of the cams 9, 32, 10 and 56 mounted on a shaft 11, but other means can be employed to actuate arms. Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4 show only arms 6 and 7.
Cylinders 12, of gelatinous or plastic material, previously cut to the desired length, are fed by suitable devices at regular intervals on the belt of the endless conveyor which moves in a substantially horizontal direction until it passes over - the roller '2., these cylinders being brought in such that their axes are and remain substantially parallel to the axes of the rollers. Suitably spaced wrapping sheets 13 and sufficiently wide to wrap the rolls 12 and to form ends protruding at the ends, are fed onto the belt, by suitable devices, in the correct position with respect to the direction of movement of the belt.
The movable arms 6 and 16 carrying the driven roller 3 are controlled so as to lift it at regular intervals in the position shown in FIG. 1, allowing the passage of the cylinder 12 under the roller; the stone
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
then goes back down to the desired position to perform the wrapping operation as shown in figure 2. In this position, the wrapping sheet can pass under the roller 3.
The conveyor belt 1 drives the cylinder 12 a little beyond the roller 3 and then goes down after passing over the roller 2, while the cylinder 12 stops by meeting driven rollers 4 and 5 on the arms movable 7 and 20, suitably inclined to produce contact between the rollers 4 and 5 and the object 12. The partial rotation of the arms respectively carrying the roller 3 and the two rollers 4 and 5 is obtained by means of the cams 9 and 32 , 10 and 56. Part of the circumference of the roller 5 lies below the plane of the horizontal part of the conveyor belt, and at this point the roller 5 is very close to the belt where it changes. direction, so that the cylinder 12 is held above the horizontal part of the conveyor belt and begins to rotate.
In the meantime, the arms 6 and 16 carrying the roller 3, under which the cylinder 12 has passed, fall down, bringing the roller 3 into contact with the cylinder 12.
The sheet of paper or other material 13 passes freely under the roller 3, and then under the cylinder 12.
This sheet is then lifted and brought back by the roller 5 and it is wound around the rotating cylinder 12 under the combined action of the rollers 5, 4, 3 and the belt 1. After the cylinder 12 has been thus wrapped. , folding and pressing devices 14 and 57, 15 and 58 are put into action and effect the complete closing of the ends of the envelope. The arms 7 and 20 carrying the rollers 4 and 5 are
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
then moved to the position shown in Figure 3 and allow the evacuation of the wrapped cylinder, by the movement of the belt 1 and by its own weight.
Then the rotation of the shaft 11 moves the arms
6 and 16, 7 and 20 via cams 9 and 32, 10 and
56 and returns the rollers 3, 4 and 5 to the position shown in Figure 1, to allow the operations to be repeated.
It will be noted that the movement of the various arms to lift the respective rollers is obtained by means of the corresponding cams, but that the movement of the arms in the opposite direction is carried out under the action of gravity and can be helped by springs. when the various arms are released by the movement of the corresponding cams.
Figure 4 of the accompanying drawings shows the general arrangement of a machine according to the present invention. In this drawing are shown devices for cutting sheets of packaging material having suitable dimensions and shape, and for cutting plastic cylinders having the required length.
The main frame 25 of the machine carries a drive shaft 26. The endless belt 1 of the conveyor passes over drive rollers on this shaft and over the shaft 28 and is carried by free rollers mounted on the shafts 23 and 27.
The motor shaft 26 drives the shaft 28 by means of the chain sprockets 52 and 53 connected by the chain 54.
The shaft 28 carries a chain wheel 38 which, by means of a chain 55 and a wheel 39 on the shaft 21, actuates one of the rollers 40 serving to cut the packaging material. The other cutting roller, 41 is driven by the roller 40 by means of interrupted gears. These pebbles carry
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
helical knives (not shown) for cutting the packaging material into diamonds.
The wrapping material, preferably paper, unwinds from a roll 22 and is guided by a tensioned guide 42, between the guide rollers 43 and 44 and the cutter rollers 40 and 41 which cut the material in. sheets of the desired shape and cut them at the desired intervals on the conveyor belt 1. In this way a number of sheets of packaging material are cut to the required shape and size, and are successively fed onto the belt 1. It is preferable to employ sheets cut in the shape of a diamond.
The plastic material to be wrapped is extruded using any suitable extrusion machine. A machine of this type is shown in Figure 4 where the material is extruded through the opening 17 under the effect of the pressure applied by a rotating screw (not shown).
The extruded material is cut into lengths of the required length by knives at the ends of a pair of rotating arms 18 separated by a distance equal to the desired length of the extruded cylinder. These knives serve not only to cut the plastic cylinders to the desired length, but also to direct the cut cylinders from the platform 19 onto the belt 1.
A chain pinion 45 mounted idly on the shaft 21 is driven in the opposite direction to the direction of rotation of this shaft 21 by gears mounted on the shaft 28 and on this chain pinion 45. These gears are not shown.
The shaft 30 on which the cutting arms 18 are mounted is driven by the chain wheel 45, the chain 46 and the chain sprocket 47.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
Likewise, the camshaft 11 is driven by the shaft 30 by means of the chain 48 and the sprockets 49 and 50.
These chains and wheels make it possible to obtain the desired synchronism of the supply of the packaging material and the cylindrical object on the belt and of the up and down movement of the wrapping rollers. Shafts 21, 30 and 11 must make one turn for each object wrapped. If the shaft 30 carries two or more sets of knives and if multiple cams are mounted on the shaft 11, these shafts could be driven at reduced speeds.
A chain sprocket 72 mounted on the shaft 11 drives the shaft 69 shown in FIG. 8 by means of a chain not shown and a chain wheel 73; this shaft 69 carries a pinion 59 in mesh with a pinion 60 on a hollow shaft 61.
Another pinion 62, not shown, is mounted on this last shaft. This pinion 62 actuates the pinion 63 mounted on the shaft 64 which drives the roller 4 by means of the flexible shaft 24.
Pinion 62 also actuates roller 5 via pinion 65 and shafts 66 and 29. Pinion 62 also drives roller 3 via a transmission and shafts, not shown. These rollers rotate so that their peripheral speed is close to the driving speed of the belt 1. It has been found that it is preferable that the peripheral speed of the rollers is a little higher than that of the belt.
Figures 5 and 6 show various views of the folding fingers which rotate intermittently in the same direction as the freely rotating roller 2 on the shaft 23 on which the fingers are mounted. The shaft 23 on which the folding machines 57 and 14 are mounted is driven by an inter-
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
mittent by means of toothed wheel 67 and an interrupted toothed wheel 68 mounted on shaft 69, the ratios of these wheels being chosen to produce one revolution of shaft 23 which then stops. The fingers 31 are chamfered at their front edges as shown at 33 in Figure 5 .. After having folded the ends of the wrapped object the fingers are returned to their rest position, thus releasing the folded ends.
The fulling rods 15 and 58 shown in detail in FIG. 7 then advance towards the folded ends. The cup-shaped portion 34 of the rod firstly presses against the bent end of the material rolled up on the cylindrical object, and when the pressing rod 35 continues to advance, the end 36 of this rod comes down. - Punch against the center of the folded material, retained at its periphery by the portion 34 in the form of a cup. Part 34 returns to the position indicated in FIG. 7 under the action of spring 37 when presser rod 35 moves away from the wrapped object. The advancement of the fulling rods 15 and 58 is obtained by means of the cones 70 and 71 mounted on the shaft 69, which abut against the heads of the fulling rods. An unspecified spring returns the presser rod when the cam has passed the head 51.
In this way the operation of the folding and crushing devices is synchronized with the end of the wrapping operation.
The present invention is especially suitable for wrapping cartridges made of gelatinous or plastic materials and has the advantage of a rapid flow rate and of a very small size compared to this flow rate. A machine constructed in accordance with the present invention can be operated by a single worker.
