Process for the preparation of a vat dye The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of a vat dye of the benzanthrone-anthraquinone-acridine series.
The benzanthrone-anthraquinone-acridine compounds mentioned in this description are numbered according to the nomenclature of the corresponding ring system in The Ring Index, 1940, by Patterson and Capell, published by Reinhold Publishing Corporation, page 571, no. 3888.
In a British patent, a process for the treatment of anthraquinonyl-aminobenzanthrones, which contain several anthraquinonylamino radicals and one of which is in the Bzl position, with alkaline condensing agents is disclosed, with the products thus obtained, if desired, being disclosed acidic condensation products, e.g. B. sulfuric acid or aluminum chloride treated.
In said British patent, the treatment of di- (1'-anthraquinonyl) -6, Bz1-diaminobenzanthrone with a mixture of caustic potash and alcohol is described as an alkaline condensation agent, an olive-brown vat dye being obtained in this way.
This patent also discloses that by treating the product obtained in this way (which is hereinafter referred to as 3-a-anthraquinonylaminobenzanthrone - anthraquinone acridine) with conc. Sulfuric acid as an acidic condensation agent leads to a green vat dye.
It has now been found that this green vat dye has a disadvantage in that fabrics dyed with it have extremely poor fastness properties compared to washing in soda, in that a pronounced color change takes place and undyed fabric that comes into contact with it is heavily soiled. If the 3-a-anthraquinonylamino-benzanthrone-anthraquinone-acridine is treated with a mixture of aluminum chloride and sodium chloride at a temperature of about 150 ° C., a vat dye is obtained which stains tissue in unsightly green-gray shades.
It has now been found in an extremely surprising way that a greenish khaki vat dye which dyes fabric in shades of extremely good fastness properties to boiling in soda solution is obtained when 3-α-anthraquinonylamino-benzanthrone-anthraquinone-acridine with aluminum chloride treated in the presence of an oxidizing agent at elevated temperatures.
The process according to the invention is thus characterized in that 3-a-anthraquinonylamino-benzanthrone-anthraquinone-acridine is heated with aluminum chloride in the presence of an oxidizing agent.
It is expedient to heat to a temperature of not less than 100 C and not more than 200 C; a temperature of 125 to 155 ° C. will preferably be used.
Examples of oxidizing agents that can be used in the present process are: oxygen, manganese dioxide, sodium nitrate, nitrobenzene, m-dinitrobenzene and m-nitrobenzenesulfonic acid.
Among these oxidizing agents, aromatic nitro compounds, in particular nitrobenzene and its derivatives, are preferably used. Above all, sodium m-nitrobenzenesulfonate, which is itself water-soluble and is converted into a water-soluble product during the reaction, will preferably be used, which property can easily be removed from the mixture again when the product is isolated.
If the anthraquinonylamino-benz-anthrone-anthraquinone-acridine is first treated with aluminum chloride and the oxidizing agent is then added, a product is obtained which is quite similar to that which is obtained in the absence of the oxidizing agent; This is because in this case a dye is obtained which gives a dull green / light gray hue. It is therefore advisable to first mix the oxidizing agent with the aluminum chloride and only then to add the anthraquinonylamino-benzanthrone-anthraquinone-acridine to this mixture.
By varying the amount of oxidizing agent, a slight shift in the hue can be achieved, while a change in the reaction time with respect to the final hue has a lesser effect. If sodium m-nitrobenzenesulfonic acid is used as the oxidizing agent, at least 1/5 of the weight of the anthraquinonylamino-benzanthrone-anthraquinone-acridine should be used.
If the weight of the sodium m-nitrobenzenesulfonate used has reached half or more than half the weight of the anthraquinonylamino-benzanthrone-anthraquinone-aeridine, only a slight change in color will be noticed.
The inventive method is preferably carried out in the presence of one or more such salts which form low-melting mixtures with aluminum chloride, which makes it possible to carry out the reaction in a liquid medium at the preferred temperatures. Examples of suitable salts are the alkali and alkaline earth metal halides, such as sodium chloride, potassium chloride and calcium chloride, for example.
The dye obtained by the present process dyes cellulose material from an olive-green vat in greenish-khaki shades of exceptional fastness to aftertreatment and especially to cooking in soda solution. It has a high stability against heating in the vat from temperatures of more than 85 C and is therefore particularly suitable for the recently developed methods of continuous dyeing, in which the vat liquids have to be heated to temperatures of more than 85 C for a long time such as for dyeing in the method described in British Patent No.
620584 described machine.
In the following examples, the parts mean parts by weight.
Example 1 30 parts of 3-α-anthraquinonylamino-benzanthrone-anthraquinone-acridine are slowly introduced into a mixture of 270 parts of aluminum chloride, 10 parts of sodium m-nitrobenzenesulfonate and 41 parts of sodium chloride at 120.degree. The temperature is slowly increased to 130 C and held between 130 and 140 C for 5 hours. The reaction mixture is then poured into a mixture of water and dilute hydrochloric acid, the suspension obtained is heated to boiling and the precipitate is filtered off and washed with water.
The dye thus obtained dissolves in conc. Sulfuric acid forms a very dull, greenish-blue solution and dyes cotton from an olive-green vat greenish-khaki. Example 2 The procedure is as in Example 1, using 20 parts instead of 10 parts of sodium m-nitrobenzenesulfonate and heating for only 3 hours at a temperature between 130 and 140 C.
The dye thus obtained dyes cotton in a somewhat lighter and greener shade than the dye of Example 1.
Example 3 A mixture of 270 parts of aluminum chloride and 41 parts of sodium chloride is stirred at about 130 ° C. and a stream of oxygen is allowed to flow through the molten mixture for 30 minutes.
30 parts of 3-α-anthraquinonylamino-benzanthrone-anthraquinone-acridine are then added to the mixture in such a way that the temperature does not exceed 140.degree. Then, after the addition has ended, the mixture is stirred at 140 ° C. for 3 hours, oxygen being allowed to flow in during this addition and the subsequent heating process.
The dye is then isolated in the manner described in Example 1. It dyes cotton in a similar shade to the dye according to Example 2.
Example 4 30 parts of 3-α-anthraquinonylamino-benzanthrone-anthraquinone-acridine are introduced into a molten mixture of 270 parts of aluminum chloride, 10 parts of m-dinitrobenzene and 41 parts of sodium chloride in such a way that the temperature is 150.degree does not exceed. The reaction mixture is stirred at a temperature of 140-150 ° C. for 5 hours and the dye is then isolated in the manner described in Example 1. It dyes cotton in a similar shade to that obtained according to Example 2.
Example 5 30 parts of 3-α-anthraquinonylamino-benzanthrone-anthraquinone-acridine are introduced into a molten mixture of 270 parts of aluminum chloride, 41 parts of sodium chloride and 20 parts of nitrobenzene in such a way that the temperature does not exceed 170.degree increases. The reaction mixture is stirred for 3 hours at a temperature of 150 C and the dye is then isolated in the manner described in Example 1 enclosed. It dyes cotton in a similar shade as the dye according to example 2_
