Apparatus for Melting a Helical Screw Thread on a Conical Workpiece The present invention relates to an apparatus for machining a helicoidal screw thread on a conical workpiece, for example to form, by grinding or milling, a helicoidal screw thread having practically a constant pitch height of of conical screw.
Until now, it has been common practice for forming threads of screws of constant conical pitch of pitch, to maintain a constant angular relative position between the workpiece and the cutting or forming tool. This has the effect of varying the shape of the thread profile along the thread, due to an actual change in the angle of the thread that is formed, this angle increasing as the diameter of the thread dimi- naked. Such a changing thread profile has various drawbacks and particularly undesirable for worm threads.
The present invention aims to remedy to these disadvantages and the apparatus which is the subject thereof, comprising a base and means on this base for supporting said part intended to rotate around a determined axis, is characterized by a shaft mounted to rotate about an axis intersecting said defined determined axis and in a plane comprising this axis determined, a device fixed on said shaft and movable therewith for supporting a rotary tool for rotating about a third axis arranged at an angle with respect to said determined axis, so that the periphery of the tool is arranged according to a desired advancement angle,
means on said base for advancing the support of the workpiece with respect to said shaft axially and transversely with respect to said determined axis with a view to relatively moving the tool and the workpiece and determining the screw pitch thread, and means acting simultaneously with said means for relatively rotating said shaft about the second axis in order to modify the angle between said determined axis and said third axis to modify the position of the periphery of the tool according to the variable advancement angle of the thread to formed when the tool and the part are displaced axially relative to said part.
The appended drawing represents, by by way of example, an embodiment of the apparatus forming the subject of the present invention.

Fig. 8 is an elevational view of a detail showing how the grinding wheel or cutting tool can be tilted relative to to the axis of the workpiece to < / B> work.
The same components are designated in all the figures by the same de reference indices. The apparatus 10 shown comprises a base 12 having a front headstock 14 and a rear headstock 16 of known construction mounted on said base and respectively comprising spikes 18 and 20 to support a part to to be machined 22. The part 22 comprises a conical section 24 in which must be formed threads 26 of height of not constant conical. A training tool 28 which can be constituted by a grinding wheel as shown, a milling cutter or any other similar tool, is mounted to form the threads 26 as will be described. below.
In fig. 1 to 5, the grinding wheel is shown mounted to rotation on an axis parallel to the axis of the part to work, this for the clarity of the drawing, but in reality the grinding wheel is mounted in such a way that its axis of rotation can be arranged at an angle with respect to to the axis of the part as shown in in fig. 8 while grinding a tapered helical screw thread or the like.
In addition, the support of the grinding wheel or cutting tool is arranged in such a way that the angle between the axis of the grinding wheel and the workpiece can be constantly changed in a determined manner, to in advance, when the workpiece 22 and the grinding wheel are moved axially relative to each other.
To achieve this, the grinding wheel is carried by a bracket 30 which is pivotally mounted on a carriage 32 movable transversely with respect to to the part 22 and disposed in its turn on a slide 34 movable axially relative to the part 22. The slide 34 comprises a plate 36 disposed on guides s 'extending longitudinally on the base 12 and a guide 38 extending transversely and having an eagle-tail guide projection 40.
The slide. 34 is advanced axially with respect to to part 22 by means of a screw 42 screwing into a nut 44 integral with the plate 36. We will now describe the means to drive the feed screw 42.
The carriage 32 comprises a sliding block 46 having an eagle tail groove intended to receive the projection 40 also in eagle tail of the guide 38. < / B> To advance the carriage 32 and thus the cutting tool or the grinding wheel transversely with respect to to part 22, the block 46 is actively connected to a fixed cam 48 which serves to move said block along the guide 38 when the slide 34 is advanced in a general axial direction with respect to to part 22. More particularly, a threaded rod 50 extends to through a bore made in the guide 38 and has its inner end screwed into a nut 52 integral with the block 46.
The outer end of the rod 50 passes through an assembly 54 fixed to the end of the guide 38 by several screws 56 </ B> and constituting an adjustment member. As shown in fig. 2, 3 and 4, a sleeve 58 is slidably mounted in the assembly 54 and receives an outer end of the rod 50 which can turn.
A collar 60 is disposed on the rod 50 and can slide in a counter-bore 62 formed in the guide 38 </ B > and a sleeve spacer 64 58 abuts against the collar 60 and prevents relative axial movement in one direction between the sleeve and the rod 50 . A hand handwheel 66 is attached to the outer end of the rod 50 and abuts against the end outer sleeve 58 preventing relative axial movement between the rod and said sleeve in the opposite direction.
To prevent the sleeve 58 from rotating, a groove 68 is made in it and a cover plate 70 </ B > is fixed on the assembly 54 and has a key 72 extending into the groove 68. An index 74 is mounted to face a graduated scale 76 on the handwheel with hand 66 to indicate the position. at which the cross slide 32 < / B> is set and the index 74 has a base 78 disposed in the groove 68 and fixed to the sleeve 58 by means of screws < B> 80.
A block 82 is fixed to the lower side of the sleeve 58 by several screws 84, this block having an ankle 86. The ankle 86 is tightly fitted in a follower 88 sliding in a cam-shaped groove 90 formed in the cam 48. As shown to < / B> fig. 3, the groove 90 extends along, the relative to the axis of the part 22, this angle an ang being equal < B> at the angle of taper of the workpiece .
Thus, when the carriage and the cutting tool are moved generally axially with respect to part 22, the follower 88 slides along the groove 90 and moves the sleeve 58 which, at in turn, moves the rod 50 </ B > and the transverse carriage 32. This has the effect of simultaneously advancing the cutting tool and the grinding wheel axially and transversely with respect to to the workpiece to work in a diagonal path parallel to the conical surface of part 22.
The cam 48 is mounted on a bar 92 which, in in turn, is supported by the base 12 by a pair of consoles 94, only one of which is shown. Several screws 96 allow the cam 48 to be fixed in an adjustable manner on the bar 92. In the embodiment shown, the adjustment member 54 has a groove 98 looking down and slidably receiving cam 48, so to ensure correct lateral spacing of the cam to the cross slide and a bottom cover plate 100 can be fixed to the bottom of the assembly by means of screws if desired.
As shown in fig. 1, 2, 3 and 5, the cross slide 32 includes a bearing block 102 mounted on the block sliding 46 and supporting to rotation a shaft 104. The shaft 104 is retained axially with respect to the bearing 102 by a stop bearing which comprises two spaced apart rings 106 and 108 separated from each other by a spacer ring 110 and attached to one end of the bearing 102 by screws 112. A flange 114 of the thrust bearing is secured to the end of shaft 104 by screws 116 and extends between the rings 106 and 108 as shown to in fig. 5.
The 30 console comprises a sleeve 118 surrounding the shaft 104 and retained axially by a pair of collars 120 and 122 fixed to the shaft by screws 124 and 126. The 30 console also includes a 128 platform on which an electric motor 130 is mounted for training of the cutting tool or of the grinding wheel and a 132 arm extending laterally. A hollow block 134 is attached to the arm by screws 136 and receives a tubular sleeve 138 which rotatably supports a shaft 140. The grinding wheel 28 or the cutting tool is fixed on the shaft 140.
Pulleys 142 and 144 are mounted on the motor shaft and shaft 140, respectively, and an endless belt 146 extends around these pulleys to establish a drive connection between the motor and the motor. ar ber 140.
It will be noted that the axis of the shaft 104 intersects and is perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the part 22 and that the rotary axis of the grinding wheel 28 or cutting tool cuts and is perpendicular, to the axis of, shaft 104. In addition, the 30 bracket and the Grinding wheel supporting members are formed to position the wheel 28 of such that it cuts and is shared by the axis of the shaft 104. Thus, when the wheel is tilted relative to part 22 as described below, it pivots about a point on the axis of shaft 104, so that the point of contact between the grinding wheel and the part < B> to work is always practically in a plane, comprising the axis of rotation of part 22 and the axis of rotation of shaft 104.
Therefore, the wheel can be adjusted to form the thread of the workpiece to to work by tilting the rotary axis of the wheel at an angle to the to axis. rotating part 22 practically equal to the desired angle of the thread to to form.
To initially set the console 30 and therefore the rotary axis of the grinding wheel to the desired angle with respect to to the axis rotary part 22, a worm 148, shaped on a shaft 150, meshes with a tangent wheel 152 cut in the shaft 104.
The shaft 150 is journaled in sleeves 154 and 156 mounted on the bracket 30, these sleeves also retaining the worm 148 axially . The sleeve 154 is fixed relative to to the console 30 by at least one screw 158. An end portion 160 </ B> projecting outwardly from the 150 shaft is shaped to receive a tool not shown, the 150 shaft which can there be driven in rotation to adjust in a rotary manner the console 30 with respect to shaft 104 .
The console 30 is easily locked in the desired set position with respect to the shaft 104 by a device shown in fig. 5 and 6. In particular, a bore 162 is formed in the bracket 30, this bore being cut by shaft 104. A sleeve 164 is disposed in the bore to provide a bearing for a shaft 166 which has a threaded inner end threading into a wedge block 168 </ B> tapped. A handle 170 is connected to the outer end of the shaft 166, so that by turning the handle, the block 168 can be moved to shaft 104 and locked against it to lock the shaft and bracket 30 against any relative rotational movement.
In order to constantly vary the angular relative position between the axes of rotation of the part 22 and the grinding wheel shown to in FIG. 8, when the grinding wheel is moved along the part 22, a positive device makes it possible to rotate the shaft 104 in a chronological position determined with respect to the advance movement of the grinding wheel. More particularly, a worm 172 is journaled in the bearing 102 as shown in fig. 15 3 and 5, to mesh with a tangent wheel 174 formed in shaft 102.
The worm shaft 172 is connected to using a connecting rod 174, which, to </ B> in turn, is connected to a support shaft 176. One end of the shaft 176 is supported by a bearing < B> 178 mounted on the plate 36 of the slide 34 and the opposite end of the shaft 176 is connected to a 180. speed change device.
is supplied to the device via a main shaft 182 to from an energy source not shown and the screw 42 as well as the shaft 176 drives are driven to from the main shaft 182 in a determined chronological relationship through the gear train of the gear change device 180. This gear change device can be of any known construction and, therefore, is not described in detail. It suffices to say that by using a correct gear ratio,
the worm 172 can be entered so that the grinding wheel angle adjustment closely follows the pitch change angle of any propeller as the grinding wheel is moved < B> le , part 22. As mentioned above, this has the effect of producing a conical helical screw thread which has a practically uniform profile.
The rotation is imparted to the part 22 by coupling it to the point 18 by a clamp, l8a (fig. 3 ). The tip 18 is driven by a d7en mechanism, usual handling not shown so to impart a rotation to the part 22 in a chronological relation with the movement of the organs described- described above.
Where the metal machining or forming tool is a grinding wheel as shown, a grinding device 190 may be mounted on the apparatus to maintain the desired shape of the grinding wheel. Such a grinding device comprises a support mounted on the bearing block 102. Tool holders 194 and 196 are adjustably mounted on said support for placing the tools 198 </ B > and 200 with a view to their engagement with a peripheral part of the grinding wheel.
The apparatus described makes it possible to easily and automatically produce helical threads or the like of constant conical pitch so as to obtain practically uniform profiles. More specifically, it is noted that the apparatus described makes it possible to produce such screw threads by constantly modifying the angular relative position between the axis of the part to to be worked on and the metal machining tool rotary, according to the change in angle of the fillet formed when the tool is advanced relative to the workpiece .
An advantage of the disclosed apparatus is that a relatively large diameter rotary cutting tool or grinding wheel can be used, which results in faster and more economical part production. In addition, screw threads of the type described having uniform profiles can more easily engage with the teeth of a member meshing with the workpiece. This apparatus is of simple construction and operation and can be manufactured as a relatively inexpensive accessory arranged to be mounted on a standard thread milling machine or analog machine.
