Machine for forming a folding line in a sheet of fibrous material The present invention relates to a machine for forming a folding line in a sheet of fibrous material, for example a sheet of cardboard, and which can be used in particular for the manufacture of boxes, containers, cartons and the like.
Machines are already known for producing fold lines in sheets. These machines have the drawback of requiring very high molding pressures to produce a bend line or of causing a change in the physical dimensions of a blank by stretching the material laterally into the area of the line. of folding produced. With existing machines, it is, therefore, difficult to work a blank so as to simultaneously produce several fold lines spaced from each other in this blank.
The machine forming the object of the present invention is characterized in that it comprises at least one unit comprising a first and a second rotary shaping member, each having a peripheral edge intended to come into contact with the same side of the sheet, a third rotatable former having a peripheral edge for contacting the opposite side of the sheet in an area between the areas of contact of said first and second sheet-forming member, and supports disposed of each side of the peripheral edge of the third shaping member and intended to support the sheet, the supports being able to be moved so that the projection,
that the part of the peripheral edge of the third shaping member situated opposite the two first shaping members forms with respect to these supports, can vary in importance to take account of the differences in thickness of the sheet introduced into the machine.
The drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the machine according to the invention.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of said embodiment.
Fig. 2 is a partial elevational view with parts in section and on a larger scale. Fig. 3 is a partial sectional view in side elevation, on a larger scale, of a carriage shown in FIG. 1.
Fig. 4 is a partial sectional view along IV-IV of FIG. 2; and fig. 5 is a partial sectional view, along V-V of FIG. 3. The machine shown comprises a frame 1 from which columns 2, only one of which is visible in FIG. 1, extend upwardly to support a table 3 for receiving and supporting blanks 4 made of a fibrous sheet material.
The blanks 4 can be advanced on the table 3 towards a longitudinal horizontal opening 5 limited upwards by a rail 6 which extends horizontally and downwards by a similar rail 7 (fig. 2), not shown in the figure. fig. 1. These rails serve to support sliding between them several carriages 8 which are each divided into two parts, an upper part 8A and a lower part 8B, so as to allow a blank to be advanced through each carriage, between its two parts 8A. and 8B (fig. 2).
Each of the carriages 8 carries rotary shapers 9, 10 and 11 (Fig. 4). To understand the operation of the machine, it will suffice to describe the construction of one of the carriages 8.
A carriage 8 is arranged so as to slide between the opposed rails 6 and 7 and capable of being moved by means of rack and pinion mechanisms 12A and 12B disposed in the top and in the bottom of this carriage.
The rack and pinion mechanism 12A mounted on the upper rail 6 comprises a pinion 15 which cooperates with a rack 13 fixed to the rail 6 by means of bolts 14 of which only one is shown. The pinion 15 is attached to one end of a shaft 16 which is supported by a bearing 17 formed in an upwardly extending portion 18 of a frame 19 of the upper portion 8A of the carriage 8. A sleeve 20 having an annular flange 21 is fixed to the other end of shaft 16 by means of a key 22. A helical gear 23 is mounted on sleeve 20 to which it is fixed by means of bolts 21A which pass through through ledge 21.
The pinion 23 cooperates with a worm 24 (fig. 3) mounted on a shaft 25. This pinion and this worm are housed inside a casing 26 formed in part 18. A plate 27 is provided. to close the casing 26 and it is fixed to the walls thereof by means of bolts 28 (fig. 3). This plate has a boss 27A which carries a ring 29 provided with a lever 29A which extends laterally from this ring. Another plate 30 having an arcuate slot 30A (FIG. 3) is carried by the boss 27A and it is fixed to the plate 27 by bolts 30B. The plate 30 has graduations 30C which cooperate with a projection 31 carried by the lever 29A and which extends through the slot 30A.
A graduated dial 32 is mounted on the end of the shaft 16 so as to bear against one of the ends of the sleeve 20. This dial is held in position by means of a nut 33 screwed onto a threaded portion 34 of the end of the shaft 16. The graduations of the dial 32 co operate with the projection 31.
The worm 24 is keyed on the shaft 25 by means of a key 43, so that this shaft can move axially with respect to the worm, but the latter cannot rotate around the shaft. The shaft 25 extends vertically and is mounted in bearings formed in the frame 19. The upper end of the shaft 25 carries a collar 35 whose lower surface 36 abuts against the bottom of a housing 37 formed. in the frame 19. The lower end of the shaft 25 is shaped so as to have an annular flange 38 in which a transverse groove 39 is formed. A coil spring 40 is disposed on the part of the shaft 25 which extends beyond the underside 41 of the frame 19.
The spring 40 bears against the upper surface 42 of the annular flange 38 and against the surface 41 so as to bring the lower surface of the collar 35 into contact with the bottom of the housing 37.
The lower rack and pinion mechanism 12B comprises a rack 44 fixed to the rail 7 by bolts 45, only one of which is shown. A pinion 46 cooperating with the rack 44 is mounted on a shaft 47. The shaft 47 is rotatably mounted in a bearing formed in a part 48 of a frame 49 of the part 8B of the carriage. A helical gear 50 is fixed to the shaft 47 by means of a key 51 and it is held in position by a nut 52 screwed onto a threaded portion 53 of the shaft 47.
The pinion 50 carried by the shaft 47 meshes with a worm 54 capable of sliding on a shaft 55. A keyway 56 (Fig. 3) is formed longitudinally in the shaft 55 and another keyway ( not shown) is provided in the worm 54. A key (not shown) is engaged in the two grooves and prevents the worm from rotating relative to the shaft, while allowing the shaft to move. relative to the worm.
The shaft 55 extends vertically and is supported at its upper end in a support 57 formed on the upper part of the frame 49. The lower end of the shaft 55 is similarly supported in another support 58 formed on the part. lower of the frame 49. A spring 59 is engaged on the part of the shaft 55 included between the supports 57 and 58. The upper end of this spring bears against the lower surface 60 (FIG. 2) of the support 57 and its end lower presses against the upper surface 61 of a collar 62 fixed to the shaft 55 by a pin 63.
The spring 59 thus forces the collar 62 to abut against the upper surface 64 of the support 58, that is to say it pushes the shaft 55 downwards.
The upper end of the shaft 55 has a collar 65, the upper face of which has a rib 66. The rib 66 is dimensioned so as to cooperate with the groove 39 formed in the rim 38 of the shaft 25. The lower surface of the collar 65 abuts against the upper surface of the support 57.
The pinion 50 and the worm 54 are enclosed in a casing 68 formed in the frame 49. A plate 69 serving to close the casing 68 is fixed to the walls of the latter by bolts 70, only one of which is shown. The lower end of the shaft 55 is axially drilled to receive a plug-55A. The head of this stopper serves as a stop surface and is intended to cooperate with a horizontal bar (not shown), placed immediately below the shafts 55 of all the carriages 8.
This bar is arranged so that it can be moved upwards by means not shown, so that when it co-operates with the plugs 55A, all the plugs 55A and, consequently, all the shafts 55 are moved upwards. high. In order to allow the parts 8A and 8B of the carriage to be moved simultaneously and transversely, the lower shaft 55 is moved upwards with respect to the bearing supports 57 and 58 in which it is mounted, until its rib 66 comes up. engage in the groove 39, the parts 8A and 8B thus being coupled to one another. To allow easy adaptation of a crank on the shaft 25, the upper end of this shaft is square.
This crank, which can be easily separated from the shaft 25, allows the latter to turn. When the shaft 55 is coupled with the shaft 25, the rotation of the latter drives that of the shaft 55. The rotation of the shafts 25 and 55 causes a rotation of each of the worms 24 and 54 and the latter. in turn turn the pinions 23, 15, 50 and 46. The rotation of the pinions 15 and 46 causes a displacement of the carriage 8 along the horizontal rails 6 and 7.
The extent of the lateral translation of the cha riot 8, from an initial position can be measured by referring to the position of the indicator dial 32, which rotates during translation, relative to the projection 31 which remains in a position. determined. The way of arranging the dial 32 relative to the graduation 30C will be explained later.
A main drive shaft 71 passes through part 8B of the carriage. This shaft has a longitudinal keyway 72 and an annular member 73 is rotatably mounted inside part 8B of the carriage and disposed on the drive shaft 71, a key 74 of this member penetrating into the groove. of longitudinal key 72. A second annular member 75 similar to member 73 is also rotatably mounted in part 8B of the carriage and on the drive shaft 71.
However, this second annular member 75 is not keyed on the shaft 71, but it is rigidly connected to the first annular member 73 by bolts 76 which extend between the two members 73 and 75. These members are enveloped by the frame 49 and by a side member 76A which are fixed to each other by bolts 76B (fig. 3). Ball bearings 76C are arranged between the member 75 and the frame 49 and between the member 73 and the side member 76A. An annular shaping member 77 (Fig. 4) is housed between the two annular members 73 and 75, the bolts 76 extending through the member 77, so as to prevent any displacement of this member relative to one. either of the annular members 73 and 75.
The outer peripheral edge 78 of the annular shaping member 77 tapers so as to present a section substantially V-shaped, the apex of the V being rounded. In the embodiment shown, the opening angle of said V is approximately 600, it will however be understood that the value of this angle is not critical. Two rings 79 and 80 of channel-shaped cross section are arranged on either side of the forming member 77, so that their respective channels 81 and 82 are oriented towards each other and are placed on either side of the organ 77.
Walls 83 and 84 constituting the bottom of the channels 81 and 82 of the rings 79 and 80 lie in planes parallel to the general median plane of the annular swimming member 77 and portions forming flanges of smaller diameter 85 and 86 of said rings engage planar surfaces 87 of said member 77. Larger diameter rim portions 88 and 89 of rings 79 and 80 terminate on the peripheral edge of shaping member 77 and are themselves cut. bevelled so as to fit over the annular V-shaped peripheral edge 78 of the former 77.
In this way, the two rings 79 and 80 surround the shaping member 77, except its end peripheral part 90, that is to say the part close to the rounding of the part with a V-shaped cross section. These outer peripheral surfaces of the rings 79 and 80 are slightly inclined from the peripheral edge 78 of the former 77, so that they have a greater radius near this former than in their respective most parts. away from said organ.
The rings 79 and 80 which surround the shaping member 77 are forced into intimate contact with this member by circular annular plates 91 and 92 arranged directly in contact with said rings and pushed against them by springs 93. The plates 91 and 92 and the springs 93 are all carried by the two annular members 73 and 75 described above, so that the assembly comprising the shaping member 77, the two rings 79 and 80, the circular plates 91 and 92 and the springs 93 rotates in accordance with the rotational movement imparted to the main drive shaft 71.
The upper part 8A of each of the carriages 8 comprises a fixed round bar 94 whose axis is in a plane situated above a horizontal plane containing the main drive shaft 71 and extending parallel to this plane. , the axis of the bar 94 being however located in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the main drive shaft 71. The axis of the bar 94 is contained in a vertical plane which constitutes the median plane of the lower shaping member 77 which has just been described (FIG. 4). Two suspension members 95 and 96 are mounted on the bar 94 and are arranged so as to be able to be tilted around this shaft using two upright yokes 97 and 98 respectively formed on these members 95 and 96 (fig. 2). .
The two yokes 97 and 98 respectively engage with two eccentrics 100 and 101 of opposite eccentricities, integral with a shaft 99 (fig. 3 and 4). Thus, if the shaft 99 is rotated in one direction or the other, the yokes 97 and 98 rotate around the bar 94 at the same angle, but in the opposite direction. The upper part 8A of the carriage comprises a mechanism 102 for turning the eccentric shaft 99 in an adjustable manner in one direction or the other. This mechanism 102 comprises a shaft 103 supported in a bearing 104 formed in the upright part 18 of the frame 19 (FIG. 3). The shaft 103 has an annular collar 105 placed approximately in the middle of this shaft.
The upper surface of this collar bears against the lower surface 106 of a support in which the bearing 104 is formed. A collar 103A is fixed to the shaft 103 by a pin 108. The crank 107 is arranged so that it can be adjusted. on a portion of square section of the upper end of the shaft 103. The lower portion 109 of the shaft 103 is threaded and carries a block capable of sliding 110. The block 110 is of section transverse square and it is engaged in a slot 111 made in the frame 19. This block is dimensioned so as to be able to slide in the slot 111. It has a rectangular housing 112 which extends transversely to the axis of the shaft. 103.
A pin 113 is engaged in the housing 110 and this pin is dimensioned so as to be able to slide in this housing. The other end of pin 113 is engaged in one of the ends of a connecting rod 114, the other end of which is fixed to the end 115 of shaft 99 by a pin 116.
A second connecting rod 117 is mounted by one of its ends on the end 115 of the shaft 99. This connecting rod is disposed between the connecting rod 114 and the frame 19. Its other end has a slot arched 118 through which a bou ton 119 protrudes. The button 119 is mounted in a plate 120 which is fixed to the frame 19 by screws 121 (Fig. 3). The plate 120 has an engraved scale 120A graduated from 0 to 8. An index 122 made in one piece with the connecting rod 117 cooperates with this scale. The connecting rod 117 is capable of being locked with respect to the plate 120 by means of a nut 124 screwed onto the button 119.
A parallelepiped member 125 is interposed between the frame 19 and the connecting rod 117 (FIGS. 3 and 5). The member 125 has a substantially rectangular opening 127 cut in this member and through which passes the end 115 of the shaft 99. The connecting rod 117 has a hub 117A which is eccentric with respect to the bore of the connecting rod 117 in which is placed the end 115 of the shaft 99. The outer diameter of the hub 117A is such that the latter is simultaneously in contact with the top and the bottom of the opening 127, this contact being represented by lines dotted in fig. 3.
By rotating the connecting rod 117 within the limits allowed by the arcuate slot 118, the member 125 can be moved up or down with respect to the end 115 of the shaft 99. The bar 94 is pivoted at the same time. 'one of its ends around a pin 129 integral with the frame 19 and disposed transversely to the longitudinal axis of the bar 94. The other end of the bar 94 is square and supported by the member 125. The latter has a opening 125A intended to receive the square end of the bar 94. This end has a threaded hole to receive an adjusting screw 128. This has a head arranged to receive a pin of my work (not shown) and is used to move the square end of the bar 94 up and down relative to the member 125.
We see in fig. 3 that the head of the screw 128 presses against the upper part of the opening 125A, while the other end of the shank of the screw presses against the base of this opening. The square end of bar 94 is carried by the shank of screw 128. Screw 128 is used during machine setup and serves to determine the position of the square end of bar 94 relative to the machine. member 125. To fix the distance between upper and lower rotary shapers, the connecting rod 117 is rotated around the end 115 of the shaft 99 until the index 122 or opposite the desired graduation on the 120A scale.
By moving the member 125 vertically, the bar 94 pivots around the ankle 129, so that the members 10 and 11 are raised or lowered relative to the frame 19.
Each of the hangers 95 and 96 is arranged to receive a compound upper shaping member 131, respectively 132. A hanger and the corresponding compound upper shaping member form one of the rotary shapers, c 'that is, one of members 10 and II. Each compound upper shaping member 131 and 132 includes two shaping discs 133 and 134 respectively 135 and 136 These discs are placed side by side. The peripheral edges of the discs of a compound organ are directed towards each other so that the whole appears to be formed by a single disc. Each compound member 131 or 132 has a periphery which tapers, each of the two discs forming this compound member having a bevelled edge.
The respective bevel angles of the two discs forming a compound member are not the same so that the edge of one of the discs is less sharp than that of the other, for example the disc 133 or 135 has a less sharp edge. than disc 134 or 136. The sharpest edge disc 134 or 136 has a slightly larger outside diameter than that of the other disc 133 or 135. Discs 135 and 136 are mounted on a shaft 139, by the intermediate ball bearings 137, respectively 138. The shaft 139 has a collar 140 which extends radially from the middle part of this shaft and which serves to keep the discs 135 and 136 at a distance from one of the 'other.
Said shaft 139 is supported in bearings 141 and 142, the bearing 142 being formed in a plate 143 fixed to the suspension member 96. The disks 133 and 134 are similarly mounted in the suspension member 95.
The two suspension members 95 and 96 which extend from the shaft 94 support the respective shapers 10 and 11 so that these are placed substantially on either side of a vertical plane containing the 'shaft 94. The axis of rotation of each of the compound members is inclined with respect to said vertical plane, so that the parts of these axes which are furthest from said plane are below those which are closer to this plane. The inclinations of said axes are such that the two compound shapers are very close to each other at their respective lower points and are effectively placed on either side of the extreme peripheral part 90 of the member. lower shaping 77.
To move the shapers 10 and 11 towards each other or to move them away from each other, the shaft 103 is rotated by rotating a crank 107, so that the sliding block 110 is moved either upwards or downwards depending on the direction of rotation of the crank 107. In either case, the movement of the 110 block is transmitted to the connecting rod 114 which rotates the shaft 99, which has the effect of moving the yokes 97 and 98 in opposite directions under the effect of the displacement of the eccentric parts 100 and 101 directed in opposite directions so that the members 10 and 11 are tilted towards each other or away from each other. A scale 130 is engraved on the frame 19 and an index 110A engraved on the block 110 cooperates with this scale.
It can therefore be seen that the scale 130 and the index 110A constitute means serving to indicate the distance separating the members 10 and 11 from one another. It is undesirable that the cooperating edges of the composite members 131 and 132 and the lower shaping member 77 touch each other. Therefore, as seen in fig. 2, neither one nor the other of the axes of rotation of the component parts 131 and 132 is placed in the vertical plane which contains the longitudinal axis of the main drive shaft 71.
We see, in fig. 2, that the vertical plane which passes through the axis of rotation of the compound organ 131 is at a certain distance from the vertical plane which contains the shaft 71, while the vertical plane which passes through the axis of rotation of the The compound member 132 is at the same distance from the vertical plane containing the axis of the shaft 71, but on the opposite side.
The machine shown as a whole in FIG. 1 comprises several carriages 8 such as the one just described and, when it is desired to use this machine, the forming members composed of 131 and 132 of each carriage are adjusted in a manner corresponding to the thickness of the sheet of material to be shaped. When the sheet of material has a progressively increasing thickness, then the suspension members 95 and 96 are gradually moved away from each other and the active edges of the compound shaping members 131 and 132 are thus both raised and removed. of the cooperating lower shaping member 77.
After a suitable adjustment has been made corresponding to the thickness of the sheet of material to be shaped, the blank 4 is advanced through the carriage 8 while the lower former 77 is rotated by the. The main drive shaft 71. Passing between the lower 9 and upper 10 and 11 rotary shapers, the blank 4 is marked with a fold line. It will be noted that the lower shaping or gane 9 makes it possible to automatically understand the differences in thickness of the same blank 4.
As the distance between the lower 9 and upper 10 and 11 shapers is fixed (for any particular machine setting), any variation in thickness localized in a single sheet is accepted due to the construction of the former lower 9. It can be seen that the variations in thickness in the blank 4 force the rings 79 and 80 downwards, so that the blank continues to pass through the machine. This displacement uncovers a greater part of the peripheral edge 78 in an area between the upper shapers 10 and 11 and exposes a lesser part of this peripheral edge in a diametrically opposed area (i.e. beyond. below the longitudinal axis of the shaft 71).
As the machine comprises several carriages such as the one described and arranged side by side, it is possible to simultaneously shape several fold lines in the same blank. It will be appreciated that the carriages need not be mounted side by side in a row transverse to the direction of travel of the blank. If desired, one could also mount certain carriages one behind the other with respect to the direction in which one wishes to move the blank.
When carriages are mounted one behind the other, it is necessary to align them with respect to each other. The alignment of any pair of carriages is carried out as follows: the projection 31 of the lever 29A of the carriage 8 before relative to the direction of movement of the blank is set to zero on the graduation 30C of the plate 30. L The nut 33 is loosened and the dial 32 is rotated until its zero graduation comes opposite the protrusion 31, after which the nut 33 is tightened again.
The lower part 8B of the carriage is then adjusted so that the peripheral part 90 of the lower shaping member 77 is placed in the middle of the space between the two upper shaping members composed 131 and 132. When said lower part of the carriage is thus arranged, the rib 66 and the transverse groove 39 are aligned with respect to each other, so that an upward movement of the shaft 55 would have the effect of engaging them one in the other. The lower part 8B of the rear carriage is then put into place by aligning its lower shaping member 77 with the member 77 of the front carriage.
The upper part of the rear carriage is finally positioned relative to the lower shaping member 77 of this carriage, so that this member is symmetrically disposed between the upper shaping members cooperating compounds 131 and 132, after which the projection 31 of lever 29A and dial 32 of the rear carriage are set in the same way as those of the front carriage. When it is desired to produce two fold lines very close to each other, the positions of the front and rear carriages are adjusted along the rails 6 and 7.
Thus, for example, if the graduations correspond to metric units of measure and it is desired to make two fold lines 8 mm apart from each other, the lever 29A of the front carriage is moved so that the projection 31 comes opposite the graduation 4 of the plate 30. The shaft 55 is then moved upwards, so that the rib 66 engages in the groove 39, after which the shaft 25 is rotated by means of the crank 107 and in the desired direction to bring the zero of the dial 32 opposite the projection 31. The rotation of the crank 107 has the effect of moving the carriage 8 by 4 mm to the right, considering the machine in the direction the displacement of the blank 4.
The same sequence of operations is repeated with the rear carriage and so as to move the latter 4 mm to the left as seen from the front of the machine. Consequently, when using the machine, two fold lines are produced in the blank 4, one by means of the front carriage and one by means of the rear carriage, these two lines being spaced apart from one another. 'other' of 8 mm. It will be understood that the machine described above can be modified in many ways. Thus, for example, a simpler mechanism could be used in the event that it is envisaged to use the machine to make fold lines in sheet material of one thickness and one quality.
In this case, the machine can be simplified by replacing the composite shapers 131 and 132 with a single upper former, having a channel-shaped cross-section periphery arranged so that both edges of the channel engage. on either side of the lower swimming organ with a V-shaped cross section. It is also obvious that the arrangement of the upper and lower swimming organs could be reversed.
When it is desired to make fold lines in sheet material of considerable thickness, it is advantageous to practice two fold lines very close to each other to mark each fold, either the material forms an angle at the location of this fold, or that it is completely folded back on itself after the fold lines have been made there. To achieve a bend at right angles, two fold lines very close together, that is to say separated by a narrow strip of material, are used, the material on each side of the tape being folded along the lines of. bend at an angle of 450. In this position, the plane of the material on one side of the tape is perpendicular to the plane of the material on the other side of the tape.
By continuing the folding so that the material on one side of the tape covers the material on the other side of this tape, a fold is formed in which the material disposed on each side of the tape is perpendicular to this tape.
