The machine according to the embodiment which is illustrated in FIGS. 1 to 9 is provided with a frame 2 forming a base having a rectangular shape and having a lower face 4 con formed so as to bear against rails 8 fixed to the upper face of the workpiece 6. These rails 8 allow limited movement of the base with respect to the surface of the work piece, in order to ensure movement of the tool above this piece and in a predetermined relationship with respect to it. The fact that the base 2 of the machine is elegant allows a shaft 10 to pass through it under conditions making possible the operations of cutting the part below the base 2 by a spindle 12 supported by this shaft 10.

The carriage 16 is guided in its horizontal movement with respect to the base 2 by parallel transverse rods 26 and 28 mounted on this base and engaged respectively in guide brackets 30 and 32 integral with the carriage 16.
The shaft 10 is slidably mounted axially in a drive sleeve 34; it is actuated by the motor 14 via a first pinion 36, a pinion 38 mounted idle and a second pinion 40 integral with this sleeve 34 and located inside the gearbox 18 The transmission of the driving force between the shaft 10 and the sleeve 34 is ensured by claws 42 carried by a drive head 44 integral with this sleeve 34 and extending in grooves 48 made longitudinally. on the opposite sides of the shaft 10.
The driving head 44 is fixed to the shaft 10 by means of a left-hand thread, so that it constantly tends to tighten and holds the inner ring of the bearing 22 in place, while its ring exterior is held in place by a collar 50.
The upper end of the shaft 10 is supported by a ball bearing 52 mounted in a collar 54 attached to an actuator bar 56 which serves to control the vertical movement of this shaft 10 and of the rotor 12 during operation. entire cutting operations. However, the vertical movement of the shaft 10 and the router 12 can be limited during certain operations by means of a threaded stop rod 58 which is itself mounted on a bracket 60 fixed to the housing 20 of the shaft 10. and projecting upwards through another bracket 62 secured to the collar 54. This rod 58 is provided with an upper nut 64 and a lower nut 66. These two knurled nuts are adjustable and make it possible to limit the stroke of rod 58.
Thanks to this construction, the assembly comprising the carriage 16, the motor 14, the box 18 and the casing 20 of the shaft 10 as well as the latter and the actuating bar 56, is movable horizontally and transversely with respect to the base. 2, while being guided in these movements by the rods 26 and 28. At the same time, the shaft 10 and the router 12 are movable vertically and are guided in their vertical movements by the actuating bar 56.
It is thus possible, by simply adjusting the vertical movement of the shaft 10 and the horizontal movement of the carriage 16, to shape a core box or other object having in cross section any desired contour, it being understood of course that a router suitable for woodworking, such as a router with three ribs, is mounted on the shaft 10 below the base 2, so as to attack the part 6 over which the tool is moved.
To guide the tool during its movement along the workpiece, in order to make an elongated cavity or to give it the required contour within the perimeter of the zone subjected to work, the lower face 4 of the base 2 of the The machine is designed so as to bear against the rails 8 fixed to the upper face of the part 6, in order to be supported by them. Slides 68 for engagement against the rails 8 are carried by the machine; they are provided with rollers 70 projecting below the lower face 4 of the base 2 in a position allowing them to bear against the internal faces of the rails 8.
As clearly shown in fig. 6, the precision adjustment of the rollers 70 relative to the slides 68 is achieved by means of a transverse adjustment screw 72. Each of the slides 68 is provided with a front guide sleeve 74 which can slide longitudinally on a rod of front guide 76 mounted on the base 2 and extending parallel to the guide rods 26 and 28. A second guide sleeve (rear) 78 can slide along the intermediate guide rod 26 so as to support the sliding sière 68 and to ensure its positioning and movement with the required precision.
The slides 68 can be brought together and moved away from each other transversely to the so key 2, so as to bring the rollers 70 into contact with the internal side edges of the rails 8; they can be immobilized, if necessary, according to any predetermined distance using clamping screws 80 on which are movable bolts 82 supported by the slides 68 and protruding through a longitudinal slot 84 of the front of the base 2.
The slides 68 are provided with levers 86 by means of which the machine can be moved along the rails 8 when forming an elongated cavity such as a core box and by which the slides 68 and the rollers 70 which roll against them can be formed. brought closer and far from each other between the rails 8. If the cavity, the recess or more generally the contour that one wishes to obtain has a uniform width throughout its length, the rails 8 are arranged in parallel , or, if it is to have an irregular width, the rails 8 are arranged correspondingly at a certain inclination, or else irregular shapes to correspond to the width of the cavity to be produced.
The spacing between the rails 8 is such that when the slides 68 are sufficiently apart so that the rollers 70 bear against the two bars, the router 12 is able to move back and forth between the slides 68 and that its outer surface shapes exactly the internal wall of the cavity that we want to obtain. As shown in fig. 9, the rails 8 are in fact separated by a distance such that, when an opposing roller 70 bears against them, the amplitude of the movement of the spinner 12 is equal to the width of the cavity to be produced minus the diameter of this tou pie.
For various operations to which this machine lends itself, it is possible to use different types of tops having shapes varying from then that of the top 12 represented by way of example by the square drawn in broken lines in FIG. 3. The lower end of the shaft 10 is therefore provided with a mandrel 88 for the removable mounting of a router having the desired shape. Further, to vary the location of the surface of the router 12 relative to the workpiece 6 when using routers of various shapes and types, the shaft 10 can be adjusted vertically relative to the bar. actuation 56.
For this purpose, the neighboring bearing 52. of the upper end of shaft 10 can be raised or lowered together with that shaft by rotating an externally threaded thrust bearing bracket 90 which screws into the thread 92 of collar 54. A knurled head 94 , crowning this support 90, makes it possible to carry out the adjustments in question with ease and independently of the mechanical connection ensuring the drive between the shaft 10 and the drive sleeve 34. A wing nut 95 allows , moreover, to tighten the collar 54 to maintain the bearing in any chosen adjustment position.
The machine constituted as has just been described is furthermore provided with a device making it possible to adjust and limit the vertical movement of the spindle moulder 12 during the transverse displacement of the carriage 16 with respect to the base 2.
In a large number of core boxes, the cavity to be conformed has a substantially semicircular cross section and the glassworkers are accustomed to using a triangle or a steel square to check the accuracy of the core. execution of the play. The control device provided also uses this general principle to guide and limit the movements of the router. To this end, the actuating bar 56, by which the bearing 52 supporting the shaft 10 and this shaft itself are moved vertically, is provided with a sector 96.
The lower angle or top of this sector is articulated to the actuating bar 56 by means of a pivot 98; its curved upper part 100 is provided with a helical-toothed wheel 102 engaged with a worm 104 mounted on the collar 54 to which is fixed the upper end of the actuating bar 56. The worm 104 is provided with a knurled knob 106, so that the sector 96 can be rotated around its pivot 98 to bring it to any desired angular position relative to the actuating bar 56.
This angular movement of the sector 96 is used to control both the vertical movement and the transverse movement of the actuating bar 56 and of the shaft 10. For this purpose, the slides 68 are provided with rollers 108 rolling in grooves. 110 of the two perpendicular branches 112 of sector 96.
As shown, the groove 110, which is on the right side 112 of sector 96 (looking at Fig. 5) faces rearward, and the roller 108, mounted on the right slide 68, protrudes towards the rear. forward and enters the groove, while the left side of sector 96 has a forward facing groove 110 and the roller 108 mounted on the left slide protrudes rearward and enters in the groove 110. It is obvious that the grooves and the rollers in question could be arranged on the same face, either in front or behind the sector 96. It suffices for this that they cooperate in the manner of a jig and a follower roller.
The rollers 108 and the pivot 98 are combined to form adjustment points for the vertical movement and the horizontal movement of the assembly constituted by the actuating bar 56, the shaft 10 and the router 12, so so that the pivoting movement of the sector 96 varies the height of the router so that the relative spacing of the slides 68 and the rollers 108 determines the magnitude of the vertical and horizontal movement for a given tilt of the sector 96.
It can be seen from the foregoing that, when the slides 68 are held in fixed positions by the screws 80 and the actuator bar 56 is free to move vertically in its slides, the rotation of the screw without end 104 rotates sector 96 around axis 98. Assuming that this pivoting movement is in the direction of rotation clockwise from the center position at 90 (the sector 96 being vertical looking at Fig. 1), the right groove 110 slides down on the right roller 108 which is fixed as a result of the securing of its slide 68.
Conversely, the left groove 110 slides from bottom to top on its roller 108, so that the top of sector 96, and with it the pivot axis 98, move to the left by traversing an upwardly inclined arc. . As this axis 98 is fixed to the actuating bar 56, it im prime a vertical movement to this bar and, through it, to the shaft 10, to lift the latter. At the same time, a horizontal movement is transmitted to the carriage which can slide transversely with respect to the base 2 on the rods 26 and 28.
The method of control and the way in which the machine can be used to constitute a core box having a semicircular shape in cross section follow from FIGS. 7, 8 and 9, which are schematic views. From what fig. 7, the slides and rollers 70 are placed fairly close to each other, the rollers occupying the positions indicated by X and X '. Under these conditions, the inclination of the sector 96 to position A forces the pivot axis 98 to itself come to occupy a position corresponding to the roller X 'but located behind it, while the button 12 occupies the position A to make a notch initial shallow.
When the machine moves back and forth above the workpiece and between the rails 8, the router makes a groove or cavity, as indicated by the dotted line A '. During this movement of the router to the right until the right roller 70 comes to bear against the right rail 8, the router precisely delimits the right edge of the finished cavity and, during the longitudinal movement of machine along rails 8, the upper right edge of the entire core box can be completed.
As the machine moves to the left side of the workpiece a shallow cavity forms, but when contact occurs between the left roller 70 and the left rail 8 the router is spaced apart. a short distance to the left side of the completed cavity, as indicated by the left end of the dotted line A '. The sector 96 then rotates approximately 90 under the action of the worm 104 and the knurled knob 106, until it comes to occupy position B shown in FIG. 7 and in which the pivot axis 98 coincides with the point X. The carriage 16 is thereby moved to the left along the guide rods 26 and 28 until the router occupies the position B.
When the left-hand roller 70 is then moved to bear against the left-hand rail 8, the border cut ultimately on the left side of the cavity appears as indicated by B ', which gives the cavity its fi nal width with complete precision.
When this initial shallow recess has been made over the entire extent of the room where the cavity is to be formed, the sector 96 is tilted back to position C in which the carriage 16 is returned to its central position. between the slides, the pivot 98 then being below the rollers 108 and between them. This movement determines the lowering of the shaft 10 and the spindle 12 in order to deepen the hollow. However, point C is spaced inward from points X and X ', so that when the excavation is deepened as it has just been said its width is reduced.
The result is that the semicircular cross section which is to be given to the cavity is established and is held in the hand with the greatest precision.
When the notch shown in fig. 7 is completed, the slides 68 and the rollers 108 are separated and immobilized by the retaining screws 80 with knurled head in the positions shown in FIG. 8 at Y and Y '. The sequence of operations is then repeated as described in connection with fig. 7, which has the effect of bringing the sector 96 successively to positions A, B and C and of making successive notches in part 6 having a progressively increasing depth, while the contour of the cavity in straight section is always controlled with precision.
In fig. 9 is shown the position occupied by the elements when the fi nal notch, intended for the production of a core box having the semicircular shape in cross section, is made. The slides 68 and the rollers 70 are then spaced over the maximum distance which is allowed by the rails 8, and the sector 96 can be wandered back and forth on 901, crossing the positions A, D, C , E-and B without danger of excessive cutting. In fact, this movement ensures a complete and precise conformation of the cavity with a greater approximation than would allow manual work.
It will be understood that it is not necessary for the sector to come by pivoting to occupy exactly the positions A, B and C (see fig. 7, 8 and 9), and that, in practice , the sector 96 is preferably graduated and moved at angles of 50 or 10.1, for example by progressing from a certain position and a certain depth of attack of the carriage and of the router to another.
The position of the router 12 and the actuator bar 56 is determined and enforced at all times because the pivot pin 98 and the rollers 108 act in combination to establish the path of movement of these elements therein. of the perimeter of the straight section of the cavity.
The construction which has just been described makes it possible to give the cavity a slightly lower contour in cross section than a semicircle by lifting the spindle 12 and the shaft 10 with respect to the pivot axis 98, thanks to a proper rotation of the knurled head 94 to lift this shaft and router.
A notch, raised as represented by H in fig. 9, is then produced, while the lowering of the top 12 by a rotation of the knurled head 94 in the opposite direction produces a low notch, as represented by L in FIG. 9, thus forming a cavity delimited by parallel upper edges and having a semi-circular lower contour. In addition, by using a square router and by making a low notch, it is possible to provide in the core box a recess, a groove or a depression, as represented by the dotted line K in fig. 9.
It can also be seen, by examining FIGS. 7, 8 and 9, which can be produced with the aid of the machine having the described construction of core boxes or cavities having variable width and depth, i.e. gradually decreasing by straight section, this being semi-circular.
It is thus that a cavity with a tapered profile can be obtained by inclining the rails 8 so that at one end of the part they are separated by a distance such that the rollers 70 cannot be moved apart by a distance. greater than that corresponding to the fixed points X and X '. The width and depth of the cavity at this end of the part will not, under these conditions, be greater than those of the first notch, while at an intermediate point the cavity will have the cross section shown in fig. 8 and that at the opposite end it will have the straight section shown in fig. 9.
By further modifying the arrangement of the rails 8, it is possible to make a cavity having a great width and a great intermediate depth, as shown in FIG. 9, but a lesser width and less depth in its other places corresponding to what is shown in FIGS. 7 and 8. It is further understood that the rails 8 do not need to be provided in each case and that the lower face 4 of the base 2 can bear directly against the part. The rollers 70 can in this hypothesis be arranged so as to bear against the opposite sides of the part itself.
If one wants to use the machine described to shape core boxes or to make cavities or parts of suitable contour on the part giving them a straight section which is not semicircular, the sector 96 which acts as a semi-circular is removed. template controlling the movement of the spindle moulder 12 in the construction shown in FIGS. 1 to 9 by removing the screws 120 by which the sector 96 is fixed to the actuating bar 56. The slides 68 are moved outwards until the two rollers 70 bear against the rails 8, then one fixes a template 122 to the slides 68 by securing against the rollers 108 or above these rollers as shown in FIG. 10.
A stylus or roller 124 is secured to the actuator bar 56 by means of screws 127 engaged in one of the tapped holes 125. The roller 124 is mounted to protrude forwardly from the bar. actuation 56 and presses against the upper guide edge 126 of the jig 122. The guiding surface of this jig is obviously designed so as to define the straight section of the cavity which must be made in the part.
The vertical movement of the actuating bar 56 and of the roller 124, as well as the vertical movement of the spindle moulder 12 are controlled by knurled nuts 64 and 66 forming stroke limiting members which are carried by the stop rod 58 mounted on the trolley 16. The transverse movement of the trolley 16 and the top 12 is ensured by a transverse screw 128 which extends (as shown in fig. 10 and 11) across the base 2, d 'side to side of the machine and which is prevented from moving longitudinally by a latch 130.
This transverse screw 128 passes through a tapped hole of a lug 132 projecting downwards under the carriage 16, so that the rotation of this transverse screw imparts movement to the carriage 16 and to the router 12 transversely to the base 2 and that the vertical movement of the router 12 is controlled by the engagement of the roller 124 against the upper guide edge 126 of the barit 122. The transverse screw 128 can turn under the action of a knurled knob 134 fixed at its overhanging end.
When performing the initial notch using the machine having the construction shown in fig. 10, the stop rod 58 is raised by rotating the upper stroke limiting nut 64 to an elevated position which allows the router to dig the part only to a small depth. The transverse movement of the router is ensured by a rotation of the transverse screw 128, while the machine is prevented from moving sideways due to the engagement of the rollers 70 against the rails 8, and the gaba laugh 122 prevents the movement of the router 12 beyond the edges of the cavity, as determined by the shape of the upper guide edge of the jig.
After the router has been moved transversely and longitudinally with respect to the workpiece to practice in the initial size, the rod 58 is lowered by rotating the stroke limiting nut 64 a sufficient distance to allow the router cut the part deeper. The jig 122 prevents the part from being too notched since it limits the descent of the router in the regions where the cavity must be relatively shallow.
As a result of the movement of the router in the transverse direction due to the action of the screw 128, while the tool is moved longitudinally to the workpiece, one can gradually increase the depth of the notch, while its turn. in cross section is limited and controlled by the engagement of the roller 124 carried by the actuating bar 56 against the upper guiding edge 126 of the template 122.
We can, in this way, make in the room a cavity having any desired straight section and by using suitable spinners having spherical or cylindrical heads we can give this cavity a rounded outline or, on the contrary, a polygonal con round, that is to say with sharp edges. It is also understood that the longitudinal movement of the tool can be limited by suitable stops (not shown) so as to create a cavity having a predetermined cross section in a certain region of the part, then modify the template and bring the tool by longitudinal displacement to an adjacent position, so as to conform an adjacent part of the cavity into an entirely different shape in cross section.
This is how the cavity carved into the part can be given practically any shape or configuration, while allowing precise shaping of this cavity even if the worker who uses the machine does not have a large skill. The precision of the finished part which can be obtained in this way is greater than that which can be achieved by manual operations since the jig can be given maximum precision and the router can be forced to move exactly as the im poses this template, that the latter has the shape of the sector shown in fig. 1 or else an irregular shape, as shown in FIG. 10.
The type of router that is used and the shape and arrangement of the rails 8 and of the support members on which the machine is moved could obviously be modified so as to produce core boxes, objects or scalloped pieces presenting a wide variety of shapes and contours.
