Device for Threading a Workpiece The present invention relates to a device for threading a workpiece attached to a movable spindle in rotation in the headstock of a lathe, comprising a threading tool and an auxiliary tool for cutting a mating surface. in one of the end turns of the net,
said tools being movable relative to each other.
Such devices are already known. The aim of the invention is to create a device which makes it possible, on the one hand, to eliminate the undesirable portion of the end turn of the net in a more precise manner than the devices already known and, on the other hand, determine the exact shape of the mating surface.
For this, the device according to the invention is characterized in that the auxiliary tool, mounted on a support member of which the threading tool is integral, is movable relative to said member in the longitudinal direction and is controlled by a drive mechanism, one element of which is kept in contact with a control member independent of said support member so as to move in the longitudinal direction at the same time as said support member, but in the opposite direction.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the device according to the invention.
Fig. 1 is a top plan view, schematic, of a lathe equipped with said embodiment; fig. 2 a partial perspective view, also schematic, of the tour of FIG. 1; fig. 3 is a perspective view of a workpiece on the lathe of the fi. 1, and FIG. 4 an axial sectional view of the part of FIG. 1 showing the relative positions of a threading tool and an auxiliary tool at the end of machining.
The turn shown in the drawing is of the cross slide type. It comprises a doll 1 in which is mounted a rotary spindle 2 driven in rotation by a motor. This pin comprises at its anterior end a clamp 3 in which is clamped a part 4 intended to be threaded.
In front of the doll 1 is placed a support consisting of a longitudinal slide 5 capable of moving parallel to the axis of the lathe on the frame of the latter, and of a transverse slide 6 mounted on the slide 5 and movable in the direction perpendicular to the axis of the lathe. The two slides are controlled by cams in a known manner.
On the upper slide 6 is fixed a tool holder 7 to which is attached a threading tool 8 which has the shape of a disc notched on part of its periphery, so as to present cutting edges which determine a profile corresponding to that of the thread to be cut in part 4. Tool 8 and tool holder 7 have not been shown in FIG. 2 to clarify the drawing.
To cut the thread of the part 4, the slides 5 and 6 are controlled so that the tool 8 repeatedly describes a rectangular path comprising an advance movement on the side of the part 4 to the proximity of the clamp 3, the tool being out of contact with the. part 4, a driving movement towards this part,
a backward movement during which the tool moves parallel to the axis of the lathe at a speed which is synchronized with the speed of rotation of the spindle 2 so that its displacement during the time corresponding to a rotation of the spindle spindle is equal to the pitch of the thread, and finally a disengagement movement which brings it approximately into its initial position. With each pass the penetration of the tool into part 4 during the sinking movement is a little greater than in the previous pass.
The upper slide 6 carries an auxiliary support which comprises a base 9 rigidly fixed to the slide 6 next to the tool holder 7. On this base is placed a transverse auxiliary carriage 10 which, as seen in, fig. 2, is guided by a dovetail rib 11 projecting from the base 9.
The guiding of the carriage 10 could also be provided by rollers interposed between the rib 11 and the carriage 10. The latter comprises a prominent central part 12 which presents a longitudinal dovetail rib -13 on which a carriage slides. longitudinal auxiliary 14 which could also be guided by rollers. The carriage 14 carries at its front end a tool holder 15 to which is attached an auxiliary tool 16, the. shape (shown in Figs. 3 and 4) comprises two cutting edges 33 and 34.
The carriages 10 and 14 are biased by springs mounted respectively in the central part 12 and in the base 9. The first biases the carriage 10 towards the right in FIG. 2 and the second urges the carriage 14 in the direction of advance towards the headstock 1. The base 9 further comprises an upright 17 in which pivots a shaft 18 which extends parallel to the axis of the lathe at a level located above this axis. The shaft 18 is guided by bearings (not shown) mounted in the element 17.
At its right end to fi-g. 2 it carries a lever 19 rigidly fixed to this shaft and the lower end of which carries an adjustable bolt 20 which is in contact with the right side face of the carriage 10. A spring (not shown) armed between the lever 19 and the upright 17 Normally tends to move the carriage 10 to the left, against the action of the spring loaded between the carriage 10 and the base 9. At the end of the shaft 18 is also fixed a lever 21, the length of which is identical to that lever 19 and which carries at its lower end a roller 22.
The axis of this roller, as well as the axis of the adjustment bolt 20, are located at the same height as the axis of the lathe. As can be seen in the drawing, the roller 22 bears on the side face 23 of an annular cam 24 which is coaxial with the spindle 2 and which is fixed to the latter. A lever 29 whose lower end pivots about an axis 25 on an arm 26 integral with the base 9 carries at its upper end a rod 27 which is in contact with the face of the carriage 14 facing the headstock. A roller 28, the axis of which is located at the level of the axis of the lathe, pivots on the lever 29 at an equal distance between the axis 25 and the axis of the rod 27. This roller bears against the front face 30 of cam 24.
In the position shown in FIG. 1, the rollers 22 and 28 are out of contact with the cam 24 and the tools 8 and 16 are both outside the working range of the lathe. When the tool 8 is brought into the working position by moving the slides 5 and 6, the rollers 28 and 22 come to rest on the faces 23 and 30 of the cam 24.
As the distance between the axis of the roller 28 and the axis of the lever 25 is equal to half the distance between the axis of the rod 27 and the axis 25, it can be seen that if the two tools 8 and 16 are simultaneously in the plane of the front face 31 of the part 4, the tool 16 moves back when the tool 8 advances to reach the position where it attacks the thread. The position of the rod 27 can therefore be adjusted so that the auxiliary tool 16 does not come into contact with the part 4 until the tool 8 cuts the last turn of the thread.
The work performed by the tool 16 is visible in FIG. 3. Once the trimming of the thread is finished, the last turn which would normally end with a portion of the thread gradually thinning and decreasing in height, so that it would finally present no resistance,
ends with a surface 32 parallel to the axis of the part which starts from the sum of the thread and which gradually widens until it connects to the core of the part 4. This surface can be approximately flat, tangent to the core of the part, but it can also have a spiral shape, for example. The shape of this surface is determined by the shape of the side surface 23 of the cam 24.
Fig. 4 shows how the surface 32 is obtained. Tool 8 is shown in solid lines in the position it occupies during the last pass approximately one full turn before it is released from part 4. Tool 16 is then at the same height as the tool. 8 and its cutting edge 33 is tangent to the thread. The roller 22 is located on the portion of the surface 23 which is furthest from the axis of the lathe. Part 4, as seen in FIG. 3, rotates clockwise.
During the half-turn which begins with the position shown in fig. 4, the tool 8 moves downwards by an amount equal to half the pitch of the thread. Tool 16 moves, on the one hand, to the left until its edge 33 is at a distance from the axis equal to the radius of the core of the part and, on the other hand, downwards with a value also corresponding to half of the thread pitch. This latter movement is determined by the shape of the front surface 30 of the cam 24. In fact, this surface is not flat but has a helical shape on a portion of its periphery, the inclination of which is equal to twice that of l. 'in clinaison of the net.
The axial displacement of the tool 16, while it is in engagement with the workpiece, is therefore similar to that of the tool 8 since the ratio of the distances between the roller 28 and the axis 25, on the one hand , and bolt 27 and axle 25, on the other hand, is 1/2.
The surface 32 is gradually cut by the cutting edges 33 and 34 during the successive passes of the tool 8, thanks to the following fact: the relative displacement of the tool 8 from one pass to the next is not a purely radial displacement but is a forgotten displacement. Thus, in fig. 4, there is shown in phantom lines at 8a a position of the tool 8 during the first pass of the threading operation and at 8b the corresponding position by the same orientation of the part 4 during the last pass . Compared to part 4, the tool 8 has undergone an axial displacement x during successive passes.
It will therefore be understood that, during the first pass when the tool 8 is in the position which corresponds to that shown in solid lines, that is to say cuts the start of the last turn of the thread, the tool 16 is less high than it is shown in FIG. 4. This tool therefore undergoes an upward displacement between each pass and its end edge 34 attacks the material of the part 4 at each pass over a depth equal to the displacement undergone.
Further, although the position of the slide 6 during the retraction movement of the tool 8 is on each pass shifted to the right by a distance equal to the depth of material removed in one pass, the position of the carriage 10, which is controlled only by surface 23 of cam 24, is found exactly the same with each revolution of the spindle. At each end of the pass, the tool 16 therefore performs an identical radial movement which, in combination with. the rotation of the spindle determines the shape of the surface 32.
The device described above makes it possible to cut a connecting surface between the core of the part 4 and the top of the thread in the last turn of the thread and this with very high precision, the shape of. this connection surface being able to be established at will by means of the cam 24. In addition, the tool which cuts this surface is guided on the upper slide of the lathe in a very precise manner, as is the threading tool, which is directly integral with this upper slide.
If necessary, a second auxiliary tool can also be provided, mounted in a similar or different manner to eliminate the unwanted part of the thread at the other end of the thread if the latter does not start in a part of the part whose diameter is at the end of the thread. less equal to that of the top of the fillets.
