Process for the treatment of kapok with a view to its spinning, and device for its implementation. The invention relates to the processing of kapok and the like by carding to form, from ventilated drowned raw kapok, a web which can be transformed into yarn. suitable for weaving.
The nature of the kapok or similar textile materials. smooth, short, brittle and low-adhesion fibers (the term kapok will be the only one - used hereinafter to denote any textile material of this kind) has however given rise to great difficulties, exceptional precautions having to be taken to avoid deterioration of the fibers and ensure the formation of a homogeneous veil capable of being transformed into resistant yarn suitable for weaving.
The present invention comprises a process for the treatment of kapok with a view to its spinning, according to which the raw kapok is passed over a carding drum on which it is. subjected to the action of small working rolls to form a veil which is then removed by a combing roll, this process being characterized in that the kapok is stuffed on the carding drum in a layer the thickness of which corresponds practically to the height of the teeth of the tarn-hour lining,
in that this layer is worked over a part of its thickness by the small working cylinders and in that one removes from this drum, by means of the peeling cylinder, a kapok veil, the thickness of which corresponds to a part of the thickness of the layer worked by said working rolls.
The invention also includes a device. for the implementation of the above process. The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the device which the invention comprises, allowing implementation of the method which also comprises the invention.
On the. single figure of this drawing, 1 die sign a support on which a kapok tablecloth is. brought to be gripped by a compressor cylinder 2, from where it passes to a loader 3, fitted with straight teeth. The latter applies the web to a large carding drum 4, fitted with hooked teeth, driving said web upwards. A first worker cylinder 5, fitted with hooked teeth, produces the stuffing, that is to say the wise filling of the lining of the drum 4 and regulates the web of kapok.
A brushing cylinder 6, lined with soft bristles, is slightly released from the drum 4 and cooperates with the worker 5 to clean the latter by removing the kapok which can be driven by the worker's lining, this kapok being brought back by the worker. hrossear on the periphery of the drum 4. A second worker 7 is placed near the first worker 5 - and completes the action of the latter, while a brusher 8 similar to the brusher 6 cooperates with this second worker.
The kapok web thus formed is then subjected to the action of a carder detaching cylinder 9 with long straight teeth which partially unhooks the kapok web and prepares (the latter to allow its removal from the drum 4 by a cylinder comb 10, furnished with short straight teeth much closer than the teeth of the large drum 4.
The veil is removed from cylinder 10 by a usual comb of the cotton-comb type, arranged to the right of cylinder 10, and is then folded back on itself and calibrated to form a very strong and uniform wick which is subjected. to a process of drawing and twisting to transform it into a strong yarn, suitable for weaving.
The teeth of the workers' lining 5, 7 penetrate into the lining of the drum 4 only over a part, preferably less than half, of the height of the teeth thereof. Furthermore, the teeth of the cylinder 10 penetrate even less deeply into the lining of the drum 4. Initially, the feeding of the kapok is adjusted so as to stuff the lining of the drum 4 to practically the entire height of its teeth.
The outer layer will be worked effectively by rolls 5 and 7, while roll 10 will remove part of the layer thus worked. The kapok feed is adapted to the quantity thus removed.
The layer of kapok remaining permanently on the drum 4 has the advantage of forming a flexible support for the kapok undergoing carding and of providing a layer of kapok already previously carded, which is worked together with the raw kapok fed by. cylinder 3, which ensures better regularization of the web formed. The kapok res both on the drum also ensures better adhesion of the new fresh web deposited on the drum.
The nature of the linings of the various drums and cylinders as well as the relative speeds of these components are of great importance and their development has made it possible to obtain that the treatment is carried out without deterioration or fatigue of the kapok fibers and practically without ventilation of the latter. .Good results are obtained when the linear speeds are adjusted so that that of cylinder 9 is the greatest, for example double that of drum 4,
which in turn is larger than that of cylinder 3, for example in the ratio 3: 2 approx. The linear speed of cylinder 3 is significantly greater than that of cylinders 5 and 7, for example in the ratio 3: 1, whereas that of cylinders 5 and 7 is at. its turn for example about three times greater than that of the cylinder 10. The linear speed of the brushers 6 and 8 is even smaller. These speeds can be obtained using an engine 11 and a transmission system, for example as illustrated in the sketch in the accompanying drawing.
In addition, it has been found that it is appropriate to use for the cylinders 3, 9 and 10 a lining with teeth much closer than those of the drum 4, while all the hooked teeth, which are, for example, established in brass, must. be flexible.
In a variant, there could be more than two small worker cylinders arranged close to each other at the upper part of the carding drum and each cooperating with a brushing cylinder.
