<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
! et le cylindre diviseur ou briseur c au grand tambour cardeur.

"Process and device for the preparation of kapok or other similar textile material with a view to spinning" ..
Up to now all the attempts made to arrive industrially in obtaining yarns of kapok or other similar textile material, with very short and fine fibers, yarns which are resistant, regular and suitable for weaving, have yielded no satisfying result. The fibers of the textile material in question cannot be sufficiently paralleled on the best current carding machines and do not have sufficient adhesion between them to be able to be suitably prepared for spinning.
The thin sheet (or veil) of cotton wool obtained on these carding machines
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
is irregular and with crossed fibers, that is to say very little adherent to each other, if we consider that between two crossed fibers there is only one point of contact and adhesion while between two parallel fibers , there is a succession of such points.
The wick (or ribbon) produced by means of this web does not have sufficient strength or sufficiently regular to be able to be subsequently transformed into yarn on the machines used for this purpose.
According to the process which is the object of the present invention, the starting point is a coarse sheet composed of a middle part. in lower quality kapok and two side borders of suitable width in better quality kapok or in a textile material with shorter and less fine fibers than kapok.
The coarse web thus obtained is passed through a suitable carding machine in which its fibers are parallel without being damaged or partially destroyed and is made into a thin web or web by means which will be described below.
The thin web is then folded back to form a wick (or ribbon) in which the middle kapok portion is conveniently folded back to form a longitudinal core, while the two longer, more adherent fiber side borders are folded back and wound around this core to form a sheath or coating.
This sheath is sufficiently strong to withstand the operation of the spinning and to maintain the regularity of the inner core during this operation, while the twisting has the effect of shrinking said sheath by tightening its fibers and by subjecting the fibers of the core to intensive compression. which suitably increases their adhesion.
This gives a coated kapok yarn, all of which
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the fibers exhibit a more or less even adhesion and the regularity and resistance of which are perfectly sufficient to permit its use for weaving, hosiery and knitting.
The process for preparing the roving, which will then be processed in the spinning machines, as well as an embodiment of the special carding machine suitable for this preparation, according to the present invention, are described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which :
Fig. 1 shows in cross section taken along the line X-X of FIG. 4 the thin sheet or veil coming out of this carding machine.
Fig. 2 shows a first folding of the middle part of this web.
Fig. 3 shows the subsequent folding and winding of the side edges around the middle part.
Fig. 4 shows a longitudinal elevational view of the card maker.
Figs. 5 & 6 show how the organs are trained.
In these figures; d designates the large carding drum; b the food cylinder; c the breaker, e, f, g, h, i the working cylinders; j the combing drum; k the ascending comb which detaches the veil a1 from the combing drum above a receiving plate 1, from where it is taken at a2 by the hands of the worker or by a funnel not shown to form a wick, by folding back the edges of said web or by contracting it suitably, which wick then passes between the condenser rolls ml m2 which transform it into a ribbon a3 which is finally drawn by the rolls o1 and o2 through the funnel n to form the carded product ready for spinning.
The initial coarse tablecloth a, of which the middle part is made of lower quality kapok and the two side edges of better quality kapok is laid out on a table, at the entrance of the carding machine, and is fed by the cylinder. coach
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
! and the dividing or breaking cylinder c to the large carding drum.
"In the various figures the direction of rotation of the cylinders and drums has been indicated as well as the orientation of their lining and their mode of drive. The 5 cylinders e, f ,, g, h, i rotate in the opposite direction. of the large drum d.The cylinders e, f, act as brush rollers; g acts as the carding cylinder retort; h as the third brushing cylinder and i as the finishing carding cylinder.
The veil formed by the material air.si carded on the tamouour d is taken up by the combing drum j from which it is finally removed by the scraper comb k.
This web comprising a middle part a 'and two side edges a ", as shown in Fig. 1, is first folded into its middle part a', as shown in Fig. 2, then the edges a" are they. -same folded are wound around the middle part forming the core as indicated in FIG. 3.
The middle part a 'then constitutes a filling core around which the borders a "a" form a sheath.
The tape thus obtained is passed between two ml m2 rollers which compress it to increase the adhesion of the fibers. This tape is regularized by passing through a funnel n then compressed again between the driving rolls o1 o2.
The shorter fibers, which are in this way more compressed / condensed, adhere to each other so that the resulting tape exhibits uniformity and strength throughout its section and can be subjected to the following operations of spinning to give a regular thread.
During twisting, the sheath is shrunk, tightened around the core and strongly compress the fibers of this core, the adhesion of which it considerably increases so that the yarn finally obtained is sufficiently regular and strong.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The tangential speed of the brush rollers e, f, h is substantially equal to that of the carder drum d; that of the carding cylinders g and i is slightly higher, but the carding cylinder g and the carding finishing cylinder i are appreciably closer to the carding drum d than the brushing cylinders e, f, h.
All these cylinders move closer to the drum d- in the direction e, f, g, h i.
The combing drum j rotates in the opposite direction to the carding drum d at a circumferential speed appreciably less than the latter and definitively completes the carding, that is to say the parallel orientation of the fibers in the web which it detaches from the drum d. . The tangential speeds of these two drums are appreciably lower than in conventional cotton carding machines, because it is important that the fibers, which are very short and not very adherent, are not detached from the drums by centrifugal force. It is therefore the effect of the centrifugal force on these fibers which will determine the best speed of the drum d.
The carding action of the combing drum is very important and its precise approximation to the d drum is very important.
One of the essential features of the new carding machine consists in that the worker rolls f, g, h i are not distributed over the entire periphery of the drum d, but grouped in the immediate vicinity of each other.
As a result of this arrangement, the fibers pushed by the brushing cylinder f into the lining of the drum d are immediately worked by the carding cylinder g i. then immediately pushed deeper into the lining of said drum by the brushing cylinder h, and finally afterwards, worked by the carding cylinder i which releases them slightly from the lining of the drum d, in order to facilitate the recovery of the web of fibers thus formed on the said drum to, by the drum without the
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
perfect parallelization of these fibers, ensured by the grouped cylinders e, f, g, h, i is disturbed.
Only four grouped cylinders f, g, h i have been indicated in the diagrams, which act alternately as brush rolls and work rolls.
It is obvious that the number of these cylinders can be increased as required.
