Process for the production of a vat dye. Additional patent to main patent no. 271933. It has been found that a valuable vat dye can be produced using the condensation product of the formula
EMI0001.0003
in which the chlorine atoms occupy the same position as the chlorine atoms obtained by dichlorination of the condensation product of 1 mol 5,8-dichloro-1,2-benzanthraquinone Emd 2 mol-4-amino-1,
1 '- dianthrimide compound obtainable by means of sulfuryl chloride, treated with carbazolating agents of the aluminum chloride type.
The new dye is a dark powder that dissolves in concentrated sulfuric acid with an olive-brown color and dyes cotton from a yellow-brown vat in excellent, genuine gray tones.
The product of the above formula used as the starting material for the present process can be prepared, for example, from 5,8-Diehlor-1,2-benzanthraquinone and 4-amino-1,1'adianthrimide as follows: 6.5 parts 5, 8-dichloro-1,2-benzanthraehinone (produced by ring closure, the reaction products of naphthalene and 3,6-dichlorophthalic anhydride with phosphorus pentoxide in o-dichlorobenzene based on Example 1 of EP
No. 332192), 17.9 parts of 4-amino-1,1 '= dianthrimide, 4.4 parts of anhydrous sodium carbonate and 0.4 part of copper acetate are boiled with 180 parts of nitrobenzene for eight hours. Now who set the reaction mixture at 65 to 70 16 parts of sulfuryl chloride and a little iodine and kept the whole thing for 16 hours at this temperature. The mixture is then heated to 120 "within an hour, the mixture is kept at this temperature for one hour, then treated for one hour at 140 to 150" and finally for another hour at the boiling temperature.
After allowing it to cool, the product is suction filtered, washed with nitrobenzene and alcohol and then boiled with dilute hydrochloric acid. It forms a black-violet powder that dissolves in concentrated sulfuric acid with a slightly viscous green color.
The treatment with carbazolating agents of the aluminum chloride type is expediently carried out in solvents or distributing agents, advantageously in the presence of tertiary bases such as pyridine and pyridine homologues. Working up can be carried out in the usual way.
In some cases it is expedient to vat the dye after the carbazolation and to regenerate the dye by treatment with oxidizing agents, for example by blowing out with air.
$ eäspiet: 2.5 parts of the dichlorinated condensation product from 1 mole of 5.8 = dichloro-2,1-benz-a.nthraquinone and 2 times 4-amino-1,1'-dianthrimide are at 100 "in a Melt of 12.5 parts of aluminum chloride and 28 parts of dry pyridine are added. The temperature is now increased to 140 to 142 "while at the same time part of the pyridine is distilled off, and the mixture is stirred at this temperature for one hour.
The reaction mass is poured into water, made alkaline with sodium hydroxide solution, vat with hydrosulphite, a little residue is filtered off and the dye is blown out with air, suctioned off and dried.
