Typewriter. The present invention relates to a typewriter operated by a motor and having a motor member which extends in transverse direction and which moves continuously, a number of striking mechanisms each comprising a character rod and a lever. actuation thereof, all these character rods being placed follow an arc of a circle and provided with means recalling them in their rest position and (the means connecting them with an arm of their actuating lever, arm the length of which varies from one of these levers of action to the other,
and push-button mechanisms arranged in a straight line near the motor member and each of which is capable of being individually brought into engagement with the motor member, from which it then receives a thrust which is transmitted to the control lever. actuation and the character rod of the mechanism (the corresponding strike.
It is characterized in that the assemblies formed by the push-button mechanisms and the actuating levers have pairs of reciprocal contact surfaces, which are peculiar to each of these assemblies, so that the thrusts transmitted to the levers actuation and character rods do not vary from one striking mechanism to another,
the push-button mechanisms being normally out of engagement with the drive member and capable of a back and forth movement which is caused by the drive member under the control of the corresponding button bars and which gives rise to at said thrust, means being further provided for automatically disengaging the push-button mechanisms from the drive member as soon as they arrive in a certain position which is substantially the same for all of these push-button mechanisms.
It is thus possible to actuate character rods, placed in an are of a circle, by means of actuation mechanisms arranged on a rectilinear line without the striking power varying from one striking mechanism to another. because of the variable dimensions of the connecting members of these striking mechanisms with the common motor member.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, one embodiment of the. my writing chine forming the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1. is a side elevational view of part of a mechanism, showing the various shapes given to the bosses of the character rod actuating levers, depending on the location of these levers.
Fig. 2 shows a complete mechanism., Assumed to be located at the center of the machine, this mechanism having ceased to be in engagement with the common motor organ, and the character rod continuing its movement thanks to the force acquired.
Fig. 3 is. a \ tic similar to that of FIG. 2, but showing the mechanism in its rest position. In the typewriter of which we have only shown what is necessary for the understanding of the invention, the character rods 11, placed in an arc of a circle, are pivoted on a common curvilinear axis 12 engaged in a support 13 in the form of a segment Each of the rods 11 is clamped in a slot 15, guiding it during its rotation on the axis 12 and directing it towards a common striking point on the roller 14, and the rods bear, at rest , on a convex cushion 17. Each rod has an extension 18, directed downwards, beyond the axis 12.
A rod 19 is hooked on this extension 18 and returns towards the front of the machine, to end in a vertical actuation lever 21. All the actuation levers 21 are pivoted at their lower part. on a common rectilinear axis 23, and are held in grooves 24 formed in a cross member 25. The rods 19 are joined to the levers 21 at points 26 which, due to the difference in length of the levers, are situated on an arc facing the one containing the points where the same rods connect to the rods 11.
Each lever 21 has a boss 27 having an arcuate surface on which bears a flat surface 30 of a pusher 28; all the pushers 28 are pivoted at their upper end on a straight axis 31 and guided in slots 32 of a cross member 33. They are in a way suspended due to the axis 31. The latter is arranged behind and on the other side. above the axis 23. The lower end of each pusher carries a journal receiving a connecting rod 34, intended to transmit pulses given by a driving member.
The free end of this connecting rod 34 is biased both upwards and backwards by a spring 36 and comes to bear against the crosspiece 35 in the form of an angle, so that a pawl 37 mounted on the connecting rod occupies normally the position of fig. 3 and is out of the attack of the motor organ 38, running from one side wall to the other of the machine. This member 38, transmitter of the driving force, is constituted by a transverse shaft carrying ratchet teeth and rotating continuously in the direction of the arrow drawn in FIGS. 2 and 3.
The axis 31 on which all the pushers 28 are pivoted is parallel to the motor shaft 38.
Any connecting rod 34 can be cranked separately by the shaft 38, at the time required to effect the strike, by means of a pressure on one of the individual keys 40 carried by the touch bar 41 whose pivot is located behind the shaft. motor 38, the rod 42 forming the pivoting axis common to all the button bars. This axis 42 is taken in crumb, traverse 43, where guide slots 44 are made for the button bars, the front part of which is also guided by the comb slots 46.
The bars 41 are biased upwards, against the bottom of their guide slots, by springs 47. and their stroke is limited downwards by a stop cross member 48. Each touch bar 41 carries a vertical link towards its center. 50, terminated at the top by a hook 51 which, in the normal position, overhangs a lug 52 of the corresponding connecting rod 34. A spring recalls the rod 50 both downwards, the top of an eyelet 49 of this rod then abutting against a stop. mounted on the bar 41, and towards the front of the machine, the latter movement being limited by the contact of one lug of the rod 50 with a stop 69 forming a body with the touch bar.
The assembly formed by each connecting rod 34 and the corresponding pusher 28 constitutes a pusher mechanism.
By lowering one of the bars 41 using the key, the connecting rod 34 is pivoted around the axis 53: and, thereby, the pawl 37 is engaged with the motor shaft 38. The pawl 37 is pivoted on the connecting rod 34 corresponding, so that its center of gravity is in front of the pivot 57 and that, in the rest position shown in FIG. 3, the pawl abuts at 54 against the connecting rod; when the teeth of the pawl 37 are engaged with the driving shaft and pushed, the pawl rocks and its front end 55 comes up against the bottom of the angle iron 35, which forces it to remain in engagement with the shaft.
The spring 36 is strong enough so that the connecting rod 34 does not undergo any displacement before the complete engagement of the pawl 37 with the driving shaft. The angle of rotation of the pawl 37 on the connecting rod 34 is limited by a stop 56 which can be seen in FIG. '2, and when this rotation is stopped by the stopper, while the tooth of the pawl is still in engagement with the shaft, the movement is transformed into a translation of the connecting rod 34 forwards. At the start of this movement, the lug 52 escapes from the hook 51 and, therefore, the position of the touch bar no longer has any influence on the engagement of the pawl with the motor shaft; however, these two organs remain in engagement until a force intervenes, forcing them to separate.
This separation takes place after a certain movement of the connecting rod 34, because the underside of this connecting rod forms an inclined plane and it is lifted by a stop screw 59, having a more or less constant position and on which it slides. The screws 59 are mounted aligned on a bar 60 carrying, integrally fixed and forming a block with it, two pivoted arms 61, one to the left and the other to the right, of the machine. The pivoted bar-support unit also comprises an arm 62, the end of which, directed towards the front of the machine, rests on an eccentric 64 secured to a tabulator wheel 65.
The weight of the bar 60 and the action of a spring 66 tend to make the block pivot clockwise about the axis 23 (fig. 2) and the position of the bar 60 depends. constantly from that of eccentric 64; the latter rotating with the wheel 65, it can be seen that when, in relation to the position thereof, the bar comes to rise after having remained lowered, any one of the pawls 37 escapes the grip, while until then he had been able to undergo various engagements with the tree.
The contiguous thrust surfaces 27 and 30 are individually traced, so that the character rods 11 receive pulses of equal value during the stroke of the connecting rod 34, and the combined action of these surfaces actually produces a double acting, both simple lever and movement acceleration. It follows that, for any given position of the bar 60, the pawls 37 are released from the motor shaft 38 when the character rods have read an equal and regular driving impulse for all, and that the impact power due to the acquired living force is always identical; the prints of the characters will therefore all be uniformly, for a given setting of bar 60.
When the pawl 37 has disengaged from the shaft 38, the character rod continues its movement towards the roller by force to give the strike, and the push rod returns to its rest position, waiting for a new impetus. The whole of the rod 11, the rod 19 and the lever 21 quickly returns to rest under the action of a spring 29 mounted under the lever. The mixed line representing the lever 21 on the. fig. 2 indicates its. extreme position during the movement, and it is obvious, on the other hand, that the springs 36 always produce the erasure of the pushers 28 before the return to rest of the levers 21.
As he has. already specified, the levers 21 are. directed upwards, and their length is variable; the shortest levers are those placed towards the center of the. machine, and the others become longer as they deviate from it. (see fit. 3).
The lever 21 in full outline in FIG. 1 is of the short type, central ctenc, and. the thrust face 30 of the pous evening 28 bears against the boss 27 of the lever at point 68 at the start of the thrust, to give a lift: initial rapid, but because this pusher and this lever are. in sliding contact, the contact point is gradually lowered towards the pivot of the lever, and the resulting movement.
of the character stem is. thus accelerated; on the other hand, the further away from the center, the more the initial point of contact of the thrust surfaces also moves away from the pivot. leverage, in order to compensate for the increase. the length of the levers distant from the center. Finally, if we consider any of the levers, the sliding contact point of the surfaces 27 and 30 during the movement of the.
character rod, in such a way that a movement of given amplitude of the. connecting rod 3-1 corresponds to an equally determined movement of the character rod towards the roller.
In the embodiment shown, the pushers 28 are identical in all respects, and they bear, in the normal position, in the angle 70 of the transverse bar 33; it is only the individual profiles of the bosses of the levers 21 which give the desired uniformity of movement, and the acceleration of the movement of the character-carrying rods. It will be noted that the machine shown can be built economically, thanks to the reduced number of parts required. All the parts making up the striking mechanisms are identical for all the characters and can be produced by the same tooling, except the levers 21 which require different tools, depending on the location that the lever must occupy.
Each of the screws 59 can be adjusted in order to slightly differentiate the impulse given to a character rod from another. Thus, a mechanism relating to a character of reduced surface could receive a driving impulse shorter than another carrying a character of greater surface. It has also been provided that if any irregularities were to occur in the movement of the type rods as a result of differences in the manufacture of the parts, it would be easy to correct them by adjusting one or more of the screws 59.
The amplitude of the movements received from the motor is determined, for all the rods with characers, by the adjustment of the stop bar 60, according to which it is possible to obtain powers ranging from 1/3 to full power or almost. As soon as the pawl 37 has disengaged from the motor shaft, the character rod continues its course by the speed acquired to effect the impression, as we have said, while the connecting rod 34: and the pusher 28 return promptly to rest; the character rod leaves the roller freely and quickly, completely independent of the return of the connecting rod 34.
Typing: is thus much better and sharper, owing to the immediate release of the character; furthermore, due to the relative advance taken by the return movement of the connecting rod 34, the character rods return much more quickly than usual, and the typing speed can be significantly increased without having several rods with similar characters are likely to meet.
A curved universal bar 73 is struck by the character rod immediately before the strike, and its purpose is to actuate at this precise moment the escapement mechanism giving the advance of the carriage (mechanism not shown here). The machine has yet another bar 74 of the same kind, operating under the action of the extensions 75 of the levers 27,: e: t, the movement of which is independent of the return of the connecting rod 34 to the normal position during the stroke of the rods. to the roll. This bar 74 rotates on an axis 78, and it is connected to the tape advance and oscillation devices, not shown here.
The ribbon oscillator device must be actuated fairly slowly during the full stroke of the character rod towards the roller, in order to avoid excessively violent movements of the ribbon which could crumple it, and this, in particular, when it s' are bi-colored ribbons with a very narrow working band. The lifting of the bar 74 by the extension 75 of the lever 21 occurs at a distance from the pivot of the latter varying according to the type of lever, so that this bar a. always an identical movement, whatever the angular displacement of the lever.
In addition, a lan watch 72, integral with the bar and located opposite each lever, can. be adjusted in position by simple folding, and allows to obtain the same movement of the bar despite the slight differences existing in that of the levers.
At the top of the. transverse bar 33 mentioned above, is fixed by screws, a plate 76, carrying tabs 77 which can be bent for adjustment: and serving as stops and primers for the return of the levers 21 to. rest position. Each type bar has two characters: a capital 79 and a lowercase 80, and fig. 2 shows in mixed line the contact of a lowercase character with the roller. The support 13 of the character rods can be moved relative to the roller by any suitable means so that it is the mask 79 which strikes on the printing line, and the joining of the rods 19 to the character rods 11 and the levers 21 is provided so that the rods are subjected only.
a slight rotation around this last point. attachment, without causing any movement of the mechanism, during the vertical movement of the support of the character rods.
