Process for the preparation of a lightfast tanning substance. It has been found that a tanning material of excellent lightfastness is obtained if o-cresol sulfonic acid, urea and formaldehyde are allowed to act on one another in Congo acid solution until substances soluble in water are obtained and the acidity is pH 2 @ --4 sets.
The new tanning agent is a yellowish, thick liquid which, after dilution, can easily be used as a tanning liquor; In an acidic solution, it tans animal pelts into a full and soft leather of white color and practically perfect lightfastness.
It gives the general reactions of tanning substances, such as glue precipitation, precipitation of basic dyes or blue precipitation with iron chloride. Mineral acids produce in a very large excess: a white precipitate.
The new tanning agent can also be used advantageously for combination tanning in a mixture with other tanning or non-tanning substances.
The process can also be carried out with a formaldehyde, which is split off from a formaldehyde-releasing substance during the reaction, and with a urea, which is made up of a urea-forming substance, such as a cyanamide,
is obtained in the reaction and the combination of urea with formaldehyde can also be carried out prior to the condensation with the product of action of sulfonating agents on o-gresol.
How it works is explained using the following example.
<I> Example: </I> 100 parts o-gresol are carefully mixed with 100 parts oleum 26% and heated for <B> 30 </B> minutes to 100 to <B> 110 '</B> C, whereupon 50 parts of water are admixed with cooling.
40 parts of urea are added and, if the o-cresol sulfonic acid has an acidity of 10 g, 47.2 cm 'normal sodium hydroxide solution, 131 parts of a sodium hydroxide solution of 34.8% and 180 parts of 30% formaldehyde are quickly added and the mixture is refluxed for 15 minutes. The same tanning agent is obtained with a lower acidity through a longer condensation time or with a higher acidity, increasing to the full acidity of the sulfonation mixture,
by correspondingly shorter condensation times or lower temperatures. Finally, it is adjusted to an acidity of pH 2-4.
