Method for the preparation of a device. It has been found that a substance with an excellent tanning effect is obtained if the product of the action of concentrated sulfuric acid on resorcinol, urea and formaldehyde in a strong sulfuric acid solution is allowed to act on one another at an elevated temperature and the product is neutralized in order to reduce the excess to blunt free sulfuric acid.
In the form of its easily soluble salts in a weakly acidic solution, the new tanning agent tans the animal pelts into a full and soft leather of a light color. It shows the general reactions of tanning substances, such as glue precipitation, precipitation of basic dyes, and gives a violet color with ferric chloride; It weighs down silk with a considerable increase in weight.
Compared to the known synthetic tanning agents, the product obtained by the present process shows excellent lightfastness on leather. The new tanning agent can also be used advantageously for combination tanning in a mixture with other tanning or non-tanning substances.
The process can also be carried out with a formaldehyde, which was split off from a formaldehyde-releasing substance during the reaction, and with a urea, which was obtained from a urea-forming substance, such as calcium cyanamide, during the reaction, and the Ver The agreement of urea with formaldehyde can also be carried out before the condensation with the action product of sulfuric acid on resorcinol.
The working method is based on the following. Example explained: Example: 20 parts of powdered resorcinol are mixed with 20 parts of concentrated sulfuric acid and heated to 80 C until all of the resorcinol has dissolved. It is then diluted with 15 parts of water and cooled to 25 '. At this temperature, 8 parts of urea and then quickly 14 parts of 30% formaldehyde are added. The temporary precipitate dissolves quickly and completely in the warmth.
It is heated again for an hour to 80-95 and adjusted to a practically useful, weakly acidic reaction with sodium hydroxide solution. The received; thick, liquid, yellow mass can be thinned with water and used as a tanning liquor.
