Process for the preparation of a tanning agent. It has been found that a substance with an excellent tanning effect is obtained if the product of the action of concentrated sulfuric acid on salicylic acid, urea and formaldehyde in a strong sulfuric acid solution is allowed to act on one another at an elevated temperature and the product of action is neutralized to reduce the Blunt excess free sulfuric acid.
The new tanning agent .tanned in the form of its easily soluble. In a weakly acidic solution, salt the animal pelt to a full and soft leather of a light color. It shows the general reactions of tanning substances, such as glue precipitation, precipitation of basic dyes, and with ferric chloride gives a violet precipitate; He stresses silk with a considerable increase in weight.
Compared to the known synthetic tanning agents, the product obtained by the present process shows excellent lightfastness on leather. The new tanning agent can also be used advantageously for combination tanning in a mixture with other tanning or non-tanning substances.
The process can also be carried out with a formaldehyde, which was split off from a formaldehyde-releasing substance during the reaction, as well as with a urea, which was obtained in the reaction as a urea-forming substance, such as calcium cyanamide, and the Combination of urea with formaldehyde can also be carried out prior to the condensation with the action product of sulfuric acid on salicylic acid.
The method of operation is explained using the following examples: Example: 10 parts of salicylic acid and 20 parts of concentrated sulfuric acid are heated to 120-130 ° C until the reaction mass has become substantially water-soluble. After adding 10 parts of water, the mixture is then cooled to 40-50 ° C.
5 parts of urea and 7 parts of 30% formaldehyde are added to the thick crystal slurry which has been deposited; Then it is heated to 110-120 C for another 30 minutes and neutralized with sodium hydroxide solution until it is water-soluble. The product is easily soluble in water and is precipitated as a thick, white precipitate by adding a glue solution.
