Description

Process for the preparation of a tanning agent. In a further elaboration of the process according to the main patent, it was found that a tanning agent with valuable properties is created when phenol is reacted with acetaldehyde and chloronitrobenzenesulfonic acid.

It is expedient to first condense phenol with acetaldehyde and react the condensation product formed with chloronitrobenzenesulfonic acid. It can be advantageous to carry out the implementation under pressure. The tannin is a homogeneous, brownish, syrupy solution, is easily soluble in water and alkalis, gelatine falls out of its solution and gives characteristic colorations with iron salts.

<I> Example: </I> 65 parts of phenol are mixed with 25 parts of acetaldehyde, respectively. the equivalent amount of an acetaldehyde-forming body, such as paraldehyde, in the presence of a catalyst, eg. B. 2 parts by weight of hydrochloric acid, possibly condensed into a resinous body by heating the mixture for several hours to 40 to 60 '. This is dissolved warm in 90 parts of water and 60 parts of sodium hydroxide solution (40 'B6).

120 parts of sodium chloronitrobenzenesulfonate are introduced into the solution with thorough stirring and, after everything has dissolved, the mass is slowly heated to a low boiling point. The boiling temperature is maintained until a sample no longer separates after dilution with water with the addition of acid. The aqueous solution obtained can be evaporated to dryness or used as such for tanning after the necessary dilution and adjustment to the desired acidity. A quick through-tanning is achieved. The leathers obtained are distinguished by their light color, full grip and high tear resistance.

The tanning can of course also be carried out in the presence of other vegetable or artificial tanning agents.
