Description

Process for the preparation of a tanning agent. In a further elaboration of the process according to the main patent, it was found that a tanning agent with valuable properties is created when phenol is reacted with formaldehyde and chloronitro enzenesulfonic acid. For example, one can first condense phenol with chloronitrobenzenesulfonic acid and condense the sulfophenyl ether formed with formaldehyde, or else condense phenol with formaldehyde and condense the condensation product formed with chloronitrobenzenesulfonic acid.

The course of the reaction is likely to proceed in such a way that either the resin formed from formaldehyde and phenol reacts by means of the ONa groups on the chloronitrobenzenesulfonic acid with the escape of common salt, or that the intermediate product formed in the same way from phenol and chloronitrobenzenesulfonic acid by action the formaldehyde becomes resinous. It can be advantageous to carry out the implementation under pressure. The tanning agent is a homogeneous, brownish syrupy solution, is easily soluble in water and alkalis, gelatin falls out of its solution and gives characteristic colorations with iron salts.

Example: 65 parts by weight of phenol are mixed with 60 parts by weight of formaldehyde (30%), respectively. the equivalent amount of a formaldehyde-releasing body, such as Para.formaldehyd or hexamethylenetetra, min, mixed and in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. B. hydrochloric acid, condensed in a known manner to form a resin. This is, after it has been freed from adhering catalyst and unchanged phenol as necessary, in 90 parts by weight of water and 60 parts of sodium hydroxide solution (40 'Be) warm.

120 parts by weight of sodium chloronitrobenzenesulfosaures are introduced into the solution with thorough stirring and, after everything has dissolved, the mass is slowly heated up. to low boiling. The boiling temperature is maintained until a sample no longer separates out after dilution with water with the addition of acid. The acidity required for tanning is then produced by adding acid; the solution can be evaporated to dryness or used as such for tanning.

Quick tanning is achieved. The leathers obtained are distinguished by their light color, full handle and high tear strength. The tanning can of course also be carried out in the presence of other vegetable, bilical or artificial tanning agents.
