Process for the preparation of a lightfast tanning substance. It has been found that a tanning material of excellent lightfastness is obtained if one obtained by sulfating a mixture consisting of about 40% m- and about 80% o- and p-cresol, urea and formaldehyde in Congo acid solution lets act on each other until substances soluble in water are obtained and adjusts to an acidity of pA 2-4.
The new tanning agent is a yellowish, thick liquid which, after dilution, can easily be used as a tanning liquor; in an acidic solution, it tans animal pelts into a full and soft leather of white color and practically perfect lightfastness. It gives the general reactions of tanning substances, such as glue precipitation, precipitation of basic dyes or blue precipitation with iron chloride. Mineral acids produce a white precipitate in a very large excess.
The new tanning agent can also be used advantageously for combination tanning in a mixture with other tanning or non-tanning substances.
The process can also be carried out with a formaldehyde, which is split off from a formaldehyde-releasing substance during the reaction, and with a urea, which is made up of a urea-forming substance, such as. B. a cyanamide, is obtained in the reaction and the association of urea with formaldehyde can also be carried out prior to the condensation with the action product of sulfonating means with crude cresol.
The method of operation is explained using the following examples: <I> Example </I> r: 100 parts of raw cresol are sulfonated with 100 parts of monohydrate while blowing a vigorous stream of air for 80 minutes at 100 to 110 ° C. It is diluted to 250 parts with good cooling and 40 parts of urea are added. With an acidity of 10 g of the above cresol sulfonic acid equal to 48.5 cm normal sodium hydroxide solution, 168 parts of a sodium hydroxide solution of 2.7% and quickly 130 parts of 30% formaldehyde are added and the mixture is heated under reflux for cooking.
At the beginning of the boiling, the reaction mass separates out an icy precipitate when diluted with water, after about 5 minutes there is no separation and a sample is clearly soluble in water. After 15 minutes of cooking under these conditions, the reaction is over and the lightfastness has reached its maximum. The same result can be achieved with a lower degree of acidity and a longer condensation time or a higher degree of acidity and a correspondingly shorter condensation time.
Finally, it is adjusted to an acidity of pH 2-4 with phosphoric acid. <I> Example 2: </I> 100 parts of raw cresol and 10 (1 parts of oleum (26% SO2) are carefully mixed and heated to 100 to 110 ° C for 30 minutes. Then, while cooling 50 parts of water are added and 40 parts of urea are added to the reaction mass. 130 parts of formaldehyde <B> 30% </B> are added at? 0 to <B> 30 '</B> C and the mixture is heated to 45 for 15 minutes to <B> 50'C, </B> or left to stand at room temperature until the reaction mass has just become water-soluble, neutralizing to the acidity specified in Example 1.
The diluted solution of the tanning agent transforms the hide into a white leather with excellent lightfastness. Example <I> 3: </I> 100 parts of raw cresol are sulfonated with 100 parts of oleum (26 / "o 'SO;), as indicated in Example 2, and diluted with 50 parts of water. It is then added to the acidity specified in Example 1. 40 parts of urea and 130 parts of formaldehyde 30 are then condensed by adding 5 parts of dilute sulfuric acid (1: 5) and briefly heating, and the white mass is pulverized.
If this condensation product is added to the neutralized cresol sulfonic acid and boiled for 15 to 20 minutes, most of the white powder goes into solution and a tannin is obtained, which after adjusting to an acidity of px 2-4 pelt turns into a white, lightfast leather transforms.
Example 100 parts of raw cresol are, as indicated in Example 1, sulfonated and diluted with water to 250 parts. 20 parts of urea and 150 parts of 30% sodium hydroxide solution are added, the temperature rising to about 70.degree. 70 parts of formaldehyde are then added and the mixture is heated to 100 ° C. for 1 to 5 minutes. The mixture is cooled rapidly and 10 parts of oxalic acid and 35 parts of phosphoric acid <B> 80% </B> are added. The diluted solution tans skin to a white leather of good lightfastness.
