Improvement in lighters. In most current lighters, the spark igniting the wick is produced by the friction of a small striated steel disc called a "wheel" on a small cylinder of ferro-cerium called "stone", the latter being introduced in a metal tube ending at a very short distance from the "wheel". At the end of the tube, opposite to the. wheel, we introduce a spring intended to exert on the. apply the pressure necessary for the rotation of the dial to extract the spark.
This device allows only a very short stroke of the end of the spring pressing on the stone which, consequently, must be of very low height and frequently replaced; furthermore, the pressure adjustment on the stone is faulty, because at the beginning the spring compresses the stone too strongly and often blocks the wheel; it squeezes it too little. end of run for the production of the etin one.
The present invention relates to a device for pushing forward the ferro-cerium stone by a spring bearing on a threaded stone pushing plug which is screwed into the stone holder tube by a non-circular drive member. rotated from the outside and along which the threaded plug can slide. This device allows at the end of the spring compressing the ferro-cerium cylinders to achieve a stroke of greater amplitude and, consequently, to introduce into the tube a ferro-cerium cylinder of great height or end to end. bout several small cylinders of the size used with the usual device.
It also allows the perfect adjustment of the spring pressure against the stone by a simple rotation without axial displacement, of a rod driving a screw cursor.
In the attached drawing and by way of example: Fig. 1 shows in diametral section an embodiment of the assembly of the positive device; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a spare part; - -Fig. 3 is a diametral section of a variant; Fig. 4 is a cross section through A--. of fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a spare part.
As can be seen in FIG. 1, tube 1 to. the end of which the wheel 2 is fixed is threaded inside over the entire height necessary for the travel of a slider 3, this slider has the shape of a cylinder section threaded on its periphery; it is pierced in its center with a hole 4 of rectangular or oval section and can slide, with a certain clearance, on a rod 5 of the same section, itself fixed to a button 6 and terminated at its other end by a head 7 preventing it from escaping the cursor.
Above the cursor 3 is placed a res out 8 maintaining at its end the small cylinder 9 on which are placed the ferro-cerium cylinder (s) 10. A split collar 11, integral with the button 6, centers the latter in hole in tube 1 and holds it there while allowing it to rotate.
To load the lighter, when the supply of stones is exhausted, turn the knob 6 counterclockwise until the cursor 3 dragged by the rod 5 unscrews completely and comes out from tube 1; we pull the button 6 and the rod 5 drives the spring 8 and the cylinder 9 out of the tube 1 into which a new load of ferro-cerium 10 is introduced. Then the spring 8 is introduced again with its cylinder 9 and rod 5 and the slider 3 is screwed into the tube 1, turning the knob 6 until the desired pressure is obtained between the ferro-cerium cylinders and the knob 2.
Whenever the pressure of the spring 8 on the ferro-cerium cylinders 10 is no longer sufficient or too strong for the production of the spark to be obtained, it is increased or decreased by rotating the button 6 clockwise or counterclockwise, which has the effect of compressing or decompressing the spring 8. This device therefore allows a large number of ferro cylinders to be introduced into the lighter at once -cérium of usual dimensions or a single cylinder of great height, while giving the possibility of a perfect adjustment of the pressure of the cylinders against the wheel until complete wear of the ferro-cerium charge.
In the variant of FIGS. 3 to 5, the rod 5 is replaced by an inner tube 12 rotating in the threaded outer tube 6 and of diameter very close to that of the stones used. This tube 12 is fixed at its lower part on the button 6. Its walls are added to. from the button and on the, height necessary for the stroke of the slider 3 by sizes 13, in which are housed fins 3a, 3b, 3c carried by the slider 3 and whose outer cylindrical part is threaded.
The rotation of the knob 6 produces the same effects as in the rod device of wires 1 and 2.
To refill the lighter, the tube 12 is taken out of the tube 1 and the tube 12 is filled with ferro-cerium.
This variant makes it possible to reserve for the loading of stones a greater height than the rod device. Thus, for example, in the case of this variant, the height of the spring 8 can be reduced to a height similar to the height h indicated in FIG. 3 subject to having to make more frequent adjustments due to the short length thus given to the spring 8.
