Fi,-.

F'ig. 10 is a view, also along V-V of fig.4, showing on a larger scale the spring device pressing the stone against the. grinding wheel.
Fi, -. It is a view along the arrow XI of fig. 10.
The pyrophoric lighter represented com takes a wheel 1, of annular shape, visible all around the body of the lighter which is, as seen in FIGS. 1 and 4, cylindrical in shape; in a variant, it could moreover be of polygonal shape, octagonal for example.
The axial dimension of this wheel is greater than the length of the lighter for a reason which will be indicated later. Here, the axial dimension of the dial is about one-sixth of the. total length of the lighter.
The body of the lighter comprises two parts which are easily attached end to end. separable: a main part 2, inside which the fuel tank 3 is provided, and a head part 4, enclosing the wick holder 5, the stone 6 as well as: the grinding wheel 7 intended to cooperate with this stone to produce sparks, and the drive pinion 8 of this grinding wheel. This pinion and this grinding wheel are wedged on the same common shaft 9. The grinding wheel 7, its drive pinion 8 and the common shaft 9 are arranged in a housing 10 provided in the metal block which constitutes part 4.
The stone 6 is placed in a channel 11, forming a stone holder and also made in the metal block forming part 4. Finally, a spring device 12, provided to urge the stone 6 to be applied against the grinding wheel 7, is also disposed inside a recess 13 of the same block.
The two parts 2 and 4 of the lighter body are "re-assembled by a single screw 14 accessible when the cover 15, pivotally mounted about an axis 16, integral with the part 4, is in the open position.
The lighter shown also has a ferrule 17 mounted around part 4 as best seen in 19, fig. 7.
Means are provided to angularly immobilize this ring relative to the. part 4 of the head, as long as the knob 1 is not actuated in the direction of arrow 18 (fig. 5), which is the opposite direction to that determining the ignition of the wick under the action of sparks produced by the cooperation of stone and grinding wheel. These means consist of part of the positive spring device 12.
Indeed, this device is constituted, in the example shown, by a steel wire folded back on itself double and having, seen in the axial direction of the lighter, the general shape of a V </ B> -and of which. the middle part of each of the halves 16a, 16b constitutes several helical turns 20a, 20b arranged around an axis 19 parallel to the axis of the wheel and fixed with respect to the part 4.
The spring 16a, 16b is arranged inside a housing 23 which can, in the conditions which will be seen, pivot freely, as well as this spring, around the axis 19.
The ends 22a and 22b of said spring bear against the interior surface of the housing 23, while the middle region 24 of the steel wire which constitutes this spring comes to bear against the stone 6 when the device 12 is in the working position. The part 25 of the spring voi sine from its middle passes through a slot 26 of the housing 23.
This part 25 abuts against the end 27 of the slot 26 when this spring does not press at 24 against the stone; it is then still under a certain tension. In other words, the housing 23 in which the spring is housed prevents the V formed by this spring from opening beyond a certain degree, when the device 12 is not acting. on the stone. The advantage of this provision will be seen later.
The axis 19 itself is formed by the end of a screw 28 screwed into part 4 as seen in FIG. 7.
The edge of the housing 23 adjacent to the end of the slot 26 opposite to 27 has an edge 29 by which this housing presses against the inner surface of the ferrule 17, when the latter occupies the position shown in FIGS. 1, 5 and 7. In this position of the ferrule, the edge 29 of the housing cooperates in the manner of a pawl with a notch 30 provided in the interior surface of the ferrule 17. Thus, the spring device 12 opposes a rotation of the ferrule in the opposite direction to the arrow 18. The ferrule is therefore immobilized angularly relative to the part 4.
Means are provided to cause the drive of the ferrule 17 by the wheel, when the latter is actuated in the direction of arrow 18 (fig.5). These means consist of a steel wire 31 (FIG. 8), of almost circular shape, housed in an internal annular groove of the wheel 1; one of the ends 32 of this spring is retained in a hole in the wheel 1, while the opposite end 33 is slightly bent to form a pawl.
This part 3 forming a pawl is intended to cooperate with a notch 34 provided in the outer surface of the ferrule 17 to cause the latter to be driven by the wheel when the latter turns in the direction of arrow 18 (fig. 5). ). When the dial turns in. the opposite direction (arrow 35, fig. 3), the part:
33 forming a pawl leaves the notch 34 without driving the ferrule, due to the shape of this notch visible in FIG. 8, and slide along the. periphery of: the. ferrule which is then retained immobile by the edge 29 of the housing of the positive device to, spring 1'2.
In summary, when the wheel is actuated in the direction of arrow 35, that is to say in the direction producing ignition of the wick, the ferrule 17 is immobilized by the spring device 12.
When you turn the dial dan; the opposite direction (arrow 18), the spring device no longer opposes the movement of. the ferrule 17, and the latter is driven thanks to the part 33 forming an eliquet. We can thus bring, in this last case, the, ferrule in the. position shown in fig. 4 and 6, In this position, a side cutout 36 of the ferrule which.
(l; ins. the working position of this ferrule (flg. 3),; e found opposite the drill holder 5 and the. wick it contains, is brought opposite the channel 11 containing the stone. and device â, spring 12.
When this cutout 36 occupies the, position represented snf> la. fig.6, the spring device 12 is: inactive and is capable, by pivoting about its axis 19, to disengage completely ;; access to channel 1.1. forming a stone holder, this (trfi allows the said stone to be easily replaced.
The limitation, by the housing 23 of the degree of opening of the Y formed by the spring of the device 12 offers the advantage of ensuring!) The access to channel 11 is released when we. brings this device into the inoperative position visible in FIG. 6, and that rna. Despite the small size of the cutout 36 in the peripheral direction.
To bring the device back to r@#.ssort 12 in the working position, all you have to do is air it: turn knob 1 again in the direction of arrow 18, which drives ferrule 17, until the moment where the edge 29 of the spring device 12 meets the notch 30 again. From this moment, the lighter is again ready to operate.
It will be noted that the spring device is kept in the active position, for which it applies the stone against the grinding wheel, by cooperation with the ferrule, against the inner surface of which the edge 29 then bears, this device ceasing to cooperate with this ferrule and becoming., therefore, inactive when the cutout 36 is brought opposite it and the channel 11.
Fig. 9 shows the device for driving pinion 8, this pinion meshes with internal teeth 37 of wheel 1.
It can easily be seen, from what precedes, that cleaning the moving parts of the lighter (grinding wheel, pinion 8 and inner ring 37) is extremely simple: It suffices to unscrew screw 1.4. From this moment, the parts 2 and 4 can be separated from one another, as well as the wheel 1 which they immobilize axially when they are in the assembled position. In addition, replacing one stone with another is quite simple and does not require any disassembly since it suffices to turn, as we have seen, the wheel in the direction of arrow 18. The lighter described is therefore of particularly simple and convenient construction.
It has been observed that if, as has been the case hitherto, the wheel of a lighter of the type shown in FIG. 1, a length which, measured in the axial direction, is less than a certain value which, for a pocket lighter of standard length, is equal to '/, o of the total length of the lighter, the operation of the dial to ignite the bit requires a fairly large force that it would be very advantageous to be able to reduce.
The inventor has noticed that in order to be able to reduce this force without inconvenience to a great extent, it suffices to give the wheel a dimension in the axial direction which is sufficient for the thumb to act on this wheel by a large contact surface. In practice, it is advantageous for the wheel to measure, on its periphery, in the axial direction, at least 8 mm, preferably 10 to 12 mm, which for a pocket lighter having a standard size, corresponds to at least one sixth of the total length of the lighter body.
However, the size of this contact surface cannot be increased in the peripheral direction, because of the. curvature of the wheel. It is therefore by increasing the axial length of this wheel that the difficulty is solved. Indeed, to operate the lighter, it is necessary to exert a certain torque, therefore a certain tangential force on the wheel. But the magnitude of this tangential force is. proportional to the normal force exerted by the thumb on the dial. However, for the same value of this normal force, the pressure that the operator must exert is all the less as the contact surface of the thumb with the wheel is greater.
And it is precisely this pressure that must be reduced in order to have a smooth maneuver. It can therefore be seen that the lighter described makes it possible to obtain this result.
