Des moyens sont prévus pour provoquer l'entraînement de la virole 17 par la molette, lorsqu'on actionne cette demière dans le sens de la flèche 18 (fig. 5). Ces moyens sont constitués par un fil d'acier 31, de forme presque circulaire, logé dans une rainure annulaire intérieure de la molette 1;
En résumé, lorsque la molette est action née dans le sens de la flèche 35, c'est-à-dire dans le sens produisant l'allumage de la mèche. la virole 17 est immobilisée par le dispositif à ressort 12;
Pyrophoric lighter. The present invention relates to a pyrophoric bri quet, characterized by a device. spring, to press the stone against the. grinding wheel, and which comprises a tor sion spring disposed inside a casing mounted to pivot relative to the body of the lighter and presenting.
an opening through which passes the part of this spring acting on the stone, said opening being dimensioned so as to limit the degree to which this spring can relax when it is not acting on the stone.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the lighter according to the invention.

Fi-. 10 is a view, also along V-V de fiâ. 4, showing on a larger scale the spring device pressing the stone against the. grinding wheel.
Fi--. 11 is a view along the arrow XI of fi-. 10.
The pyrophoric lighter represented com takes a wheel 1, of annular shape, visible all around the body of the lighter which is, as seen on the fi--. 1 and 4, of cylindrical shape in a variant, it could moreover be of polygonal shape, octagonal for example.
The axial dimension of this wheel is greater than 1 / "of the length of the lighter, for a reason which will be indicated later. Here, the axial dimension of the wheel is about one-sixth of the length. total of the lighter.
The body of the lighter comprises two parts fixed end to end in an easily separable manner: a main part 2, inside which the reservoir 3 is provided, and a head part 4, containing the wick holder 5, the stone 6 as well as the grinding wheel 7 are designed to cooperate with this stone to produce sparks, and the pinion 8 for driving this grinding wheel. This pinion and this wheel are wedged. on the same common tree 9.
The grinding wheel 7, its drive pinion 8 and the common shaft 9 are placed in a housing 10 provided in the metal block which constitutes part 4. The stone 6 is placed in a channel 11, forming a stone holder and practiced. also in the metal block forming part 4. Finally, a spring device 12, provided to urge the stone 6 to be applied against the grinding wheel 7, is also arranged inside a recess 13 of the same. block.
The two parts 2 and 4 of the body of the briquet are held together by a single screw 14 accessible when the cover 15, pivotally mounted about an axis 16, integral with part 4, -is in the open position.
The lighter shown also comprises a ferrule 17, mounted around part 4, as best seen in FIG. 7.
Means are provided for angularly immobilizing this ring relative to the head part 4, as long as the wheel 1 is not actuated in the direction of the arrow 18 (fig. 5); which is the opposite direction to that determining the ignition -de the wick under the action of the sparks produced by the cooperation of the stone., and the grinding wheel. These means are formed by part of the positive spring device 12.
In fact, this device is constituted, in the example shown, by a steel wire folded back on itself double and having, seen in the axial direction of the lighter, the general fourme of a V and whose middle part of each of the halves 16a, 161 constitutes several helical turns 20a, 20b arranged around an axis 19 parallel to the axis of the wheel and fixed with respect to part 4.
The spring 16a, 16b is disposed inside a housing 23 which can, in the conditions which will be seen, pivot freely, as well as this spring, around the axis 19.
The ends 22t and 22b of said spring bear on the inner surface of the housing 23, so that the middle region 24 of the steel wire which constitutes this spring comes to rest against the stone 6 when the device 12 is in position. working sition. The part 25 of the spring bordering its middle passes through a slot 26 of the housing 23.
This part 25 abuts against the end 27 of the slot 26, when this spring does not press at 24 against the stone ;. it is then still under a certain tension. In other words, the housing 23 in which the spring is housed prevents the V formed by this spring from opening beyond a certain degree, when the device 12 does not act on the stone. The advantage of this provision will be seen later.
The axis 19 itself is formed by the end of a screw 28, screwed into part 4, as seen in, fig. 7.
The edge of the housing 23 adjacent to the end of the slot 26 opposite 27 has an edge 29 by which this housing presses against the inner surface of the ferrule 17, when the latter occupies the position shown in FIGS. 1, 5 and 7. In this position of the ferrule, the edge 29 of the housing cooperates in the manner of a pawl with a notch 30 provided in the inner surface of the ferrule 17. Thus, the spring-loaded device 12 opposes a rotation of the ferrule in the direction opposite to the arrow 18.
The ferrule is therefore immobilized angularly with respect to part 4.
Means are provided to cause the drive of the ferrule 17 by the wheel, when the latter is actuated in the direction of arrow 18 (FIG. 5). These means consist of a steel wire 31, of almost circular shape, housed in an internal annular groove of the wheel 1;
one of the ends 32 of this spring is retained in a hole in the wheel 1, while: the opposite end 33 is slightly bent to form a pawl. This part 33, forming a pawl, is intended to cooperate with a notch 34, provided in the outer surface of the ferrule 17 to cause the latter to be driven by the wheel when the latter rotates in the direction of arrow 18. (fig. 5).
When the wheel turns in the opposite direction (arrow 35, FIG. 3), the part 33, forming a pawl, leaves the notch 34 without driving the ferrule, due to the. shape of this notch visible in fig. 8, and slides along the periphery of the ferrule, which is then retained immobile by the ridge 29 of the housing of the res out device 12.
In summary, when the wheel is actuated in the direction of arrow 35, that is to say in the direction producing the ignition of the wick. the ferrule 17 is immobilized by the spring device 12;
when the wheel is turned in the opposite direction (arrow 18), the spring device no longer opposes the movement of the. ferrule 17, and the latter is driven by the forming part 33. click .. We can. thus bring, in the latter case, the ferrule in the position shown in fig. 4 and 6.
In this position, a lateral cutout 36 of the ferrule which, in the working position of this ferrule (fig. 3) is located opposite 5 and the wick it contains, is brought opposite the channel 11 containing stone and spring dislmxitive 12. When this.
cutout 36 occupies the position shown in. fig. 6, the spring device 12 is inactive and is unable, by pivoting around its axis 19, to completely free access to the channel 11 for a stone holder, which makes it possible to easily replace said stone.
The limitation by the housing 23 of the degree of opening of the V formed by the spring of the device 12 offers the advantage of ensuring good clearance of the access to the channel 11 when this device is brought into the inoperative position visible on fig. 6, and this despite the small size of the. cutout 36 in the peripheral direction.
To bring the spring device 12 back into the working position, it suffices to turn the wheel 1 again in the direction of the arrow 18, which drives the, ferrule 17, until the moment. where the edge 29 of the spring device 12 again meets the notch 30. From this moment, the lighter is again ready to operate.
We will notice. that the spring device is kept in the active position, for which it applies the stone against the grinding wheel, by cooperation with the. ferrule, against the inner surface of which the edge 29 then bears, this device ceasing to cooperate with. cetto ferrule and thus becoming inactive when the cutout 36 is brought in front of it and the channel 11.
Fig. 9 shows the drive device for pinion 8: this pinion meshes with internal teeth 37 of the. wheel 1.
It is easy to see, from the foregoing, that cleaning the moving parts of the lighter (grinding wheel, pinion 8 and inner ring 37) is extremely simple: All you have to do is unscrew screw 14. From this moment, the parts; 2 and 4 can be separated from each other, as can the wheel 1 which they immobilize axially when they are in the assembled position. In addition, the replacement of one stone by another: is quite simple and does not require any disassembly. Then it suffices to turn, as we have seen, the wheel in the direction of arrow 18. The The lighter described is therefore of particularly simple and convenient construction.
We noticed that if, like that. at. been the case so far, we give to the wheel of a lighter; of the type shown in FIG. 1, a length which, measured in the dircetion. axial, is less than a certain value which, for a pocket lighter of standard length, is equal to '/ 1 "of the total length of the lighter, the operation of the wheel to light the wick requires a fairly large effort that it would be very advantageous to be able to reduce.
The inventor has noticed that in order to be able to decrease this effort without inconvenience to a great extent, it suffices to give to the. wheel a dimension in the axial direction which is sufficient for the thumb to act on this wheel by a large contact surface. In practice, for this, it is necessary for the wheel to measure, on its periphery, in the axial direction, at least 8 mm, preferably 1.0 to 12 mm.
However, the size of this contact surface cannot be increased in the peripheral direction, due to the curvature of the wheel. It is therefore by increasing the. axial length of this wheel that solves the difficulty. Indeed, to operate the lighter, it is necessary to exert a certain torque, therefore a certain tangential force, on the wheel.
But the magnitude of this tangential force is proportional to the normal force exerted by the thumb on the wheel. However, for the same value of this normal force, the pressure that the operator must exert is all the lower as the contact surface of the thumb with the wheel is greater. And it is precisely this pressure that must be reduced in order to have a smooth maneuver. It can therefore be seen that the lighter described makes it possible to obtain this result.
