Le dessin annexé représente, à titre d'exemple, deux formes d'exécution de l'in vention Les fig. 1 et 2 concernent une machine plus spécialement destinée au teillage des tiges textiles n'ayant pas tendance à bourrer entre les organes de travail, elles sont: La fig. 1 une vue en élévation de côté de l'ensemble de la machine montrant les organes de commande, La fig. 2 une coupe longitudinale; Les fig. 3 à 8 concernent une machine plus spécialement destinée au teillage des tiges ramifiées bourrant entre les organes de travail; La fig. 3 montre l'ensemble de la machine en élévation de côté;

Machine for scutching vegetable stems. The invention relates to a machine intended for scutching plant stems with a view to reducing fibers into strips intended to be subsequently transformed into tow.
This operation is carried out by means of organs which break, divide, and expel the wood or the pith constituting the woody part of the stems, from another organ which opens the strips in the direction of their length or of the thread in order to allow the wood debris to escape and, finally, a last organ which acts on the strips to completely remove them from the pieces of wood or pith which would still be adhering to them.
In most textile plants, the stem does not have fibers of a single length, extending from the foot to the head, but, on the contrary, these fibers are cut from place to place, at each eye, at each part. petiolate or at each branch. As a result, by treating these straps between organs which are continually engaged or at work, there occurs at each of the new departures of the fiber, at the places where it is cut, a recoil of this fiber at the entrance of the fibers. working organs, reversal which prevents it from engaging between these organs in contact.
Due to the large number of fibers in the same case, they become entangled and form between the organs a compact mass which, by oc casionning a complete blockage and a gorging of these organs, causes the stoppage of work and total tearing of the fiber. If this stuffing is not sufficient to cause stoppages, it causes, in all cases, heating of the fiber, the resistance qualities of which are reduced.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, two embodiments of the invention. FIGS. 1 and 2 relate to a machine more specifically intended for scutching textile rods that do not tend to jam between the working members, they are: FIG. 1 a side elevational view of the assembly of the machine showing the control members, FIG. 2 a longitudinal section; Figs. 3 to 8 relate to a machine more especially intended for scutching branched stems stuffing between the working members; Fig. 3 shows the whole machine in side elevation;
Fig. 4 is the elevational view from the opposite side; Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section taken along the line A-A of FIG. 3; Figs. 6 and 7 show respectively in cross section and in longitudinal elevation with part in section, on a larger scale, the detail of the work table called composter; Fig. 8 shows, separately, different profiles of the grooves made in the drive drum and in the work table, depending on the nature of the material to be treated.
In the first embodiment (fig. 1 and 2), the machine has a funnel-shaped hopper 1 with variable inclination, supported by journals 2 on which this hopper can oscillate between the two flanges 3 forming the frame. of the machine. The variable inclination of the hopper is obtained by means of two rigid curved rods 4 articulated at their upper end in yokes 5 fixed at a suitable place below the plate of the hopper and having at their lower end racks 6 which fit onto pins 7 provided with wing nuts and carried by the two flanges 3 of the frame to set the inclination to the desired degree. The hopper ends in two breaker rollers 8 and 9 with longitudinal grooves of special shape.
The lower breaker roller 9 is mounted on an elastic base formed by a spring 10 acting on the bearing of the shaft and adjustable by a screw 11. The movement of the main drive shaft 12 is transmitted to the lower breaker roller 9 by by means of two meshing gears, one of which 13 is wedged on the motor shaft 12 and the other 14 of which is wedged on the shaft of the lower breaker roller. The latter in turn transmits the movement to the upper breaker roller 8 through a toothed pinion 15 meshing with a second pinion 16 wedged on the shaft of the upper breaker roller.
The machine also comprises a smooth roller 17 mounted, like the previous ones, between the two flanges of the frame and receiving its rotational movement by a chain 18 connecting it, by the toothed wheel 19 wedged on its axis, to another toothed wheel 20 wedged on the control shaft 12.
Below the smooth roller 17 and along the same vertical axis, is placed a matrix 21 subjected to the action of cams or eccentrics 22 carried by a transverse shaft 23. The rotational movement of the main control shaft 12 is transmitted to the camshaft 23 by a pinion 24 wedged on this shaft and meshing with another pinion wedged on the axis of the smooth roller 17, actuated as has been said previously. By their rotational movement, the cams 22 alternately lift the machine 21 which is guided in its movements by guides formed in the flanges 3 of the frame and in which it is engaged at its ends.
Two coil springs 25, housed in the thickness of the flanges and pressing on the ends, keep the die in contact with the cams and at the same time provide the elasticity necessary to avoid any sudden impact against the smooth roller.
The machine is completed by two cross furrows 26 and 27 carrying bats 28 which act as cleaners. A chain 29, coming from the main drive shaft 12, transmits the movement to the upper cleaner 26 which drives the lower cleaner 27 through gears 30 and 31.
Finally, a mobile conveyor 32, with wooden pallets, which can be actuated by the main control shaft is arranged at the outlet of the machine to receive the material coming from the cleaners 26 and 27.
The rods are introduced by loads, as they go and without stopping, into hopper 1. Thanks to the machine's tremors, the rods spread out in layers on the plate and, due to the inclination of the latter. , automatically engage between the breaker rollers 8 and 9; they then pass over the smooth roller 17 where they are compressed by the die 21 which opens the strips in the direction of the wire.
When the rods have passed between the breaker rollers 8 and 9 and under the smooth roller 17, they are freed of the wood or the pith constituting their woody part. These rods are driven, at their exit from the smooth roller, by the bats 23 of the cross bars 26 and 27 which, fulfilling the role of winnowers, eliminate the wood which may have remained between the strips, then these fall on the transporter mobile 32 where they lengthen progressively on the transverse pallets, which facilitates their packing and their release from the machine.
The longitudinal grooves of the breaker rollers 8 and 9 as well as the edges of the die 21 are rounded so that the rods, during their passage through the machine, do not meet any sharp edge liable to cut the fiber.
All the working parts of the machine, composed of cylindrical elements, with a circular or curvilinear, non-angular section, constitute one of the essential characteristics of the invention, because of the great advantages that the machine thus constituted has on machines at present. in use. Indeed, the latter are, on the contrary, based on the use of angular pieces, polygonal rollers, each edge successively wedging the rods on an anvil, which breaks the wood well, but also crushes the fiber which thus loses its resistance at this point.
In the second embodiment shown in fig. 3 to 8: The machine has a table 33 on which the strips are arranged parallel. The end of the table is engaged between the two flanges 34 forming the frame and it ends between the breaker roller 35 made of wood or cast iron and the breaker drum 36. In order to be able to move under the effect of the reaction exerted by the strips, the breaker roller 35 is supported by its end journals in bearings 37 placed between two springs 38 guided in housings in the flanges 34 = of the frame and it receives its rotational movement by an intermediate control appropriate.
The roller 35 and the drum 36 act as the breaker rolls 15 and 16 of FIGS. 1 and 2, but the drum 36 also plays the role of the roller 17 of these same figures.
The drum 36 'is provided over its entire periphery with grooves reigning over its entire length and the profile of which varies according to the nature of the material to be treated, as will be explained below. By rotating slowly, this drum drives the strips and leads them under a work table 39 called a composter, formed by a rigid cage 40 (fig. 6 and 7), in the shape of an inverted U, terminated at each of its ends by a flat 41 forming a slide.
In this cage is arranged a series of parts or shoes 42 sliding against each other under the pressure of the straps; the side walls of the cage 40 form guides which, while allowing the vertical displacement of the shoes, prevent any forward or backward oscillating movements or any warping of the shoes, thus avoiding breaking the fiber. These parts in the form of a brake shoe. Marry, at their lower part, which comes into contact with the material to be treated, the curvature of the drum 36 and, like the latter, have grooves of the same profile as those of the drum. .
The upper part of the shoes engaged between the two side walls of the cage 40 comes to rest on a rubber band 43 of special composition appropriate to the desired result and providing the extremely gentle compression, absolutely necessary for the softening of the tows.
Each of the shoes 42 is held in place in the cage 40 of the composter, during the stopping of the machine, by a screw 44 which serves as a guide and control of proper operation when the machine is working and moving in a - slide. 45 formed in the thickness of one of the walls of the cage.
The slide 41 terminating each of the ends of the cage 40 of the composter is mounted in an adjustable pad 46 which slides in the flanges 34 of the frame; this pad 46 rests on a leaf spring 47 or on any other member which can constitute an elastic assembly.
The composter is driven by a reciprocating rectilinear movement controlled by a connecting rod articulated on an axis 48 disposed on one of the faces of the cage 40. This connecting rod is an action born by a shaft receiving its movement from the main control and, as it It is necessary, according to the work, to vary the stroke of the reciprocating rectilinear movement, the button of the connecting rod moves, of the desired degree on its crank, in a groove.
The intermittent spacing of the working members avoiding the total or momentary stopping of the drive movement is achieved by a displacement of the drum caused by cams 49 arranged above each of the bearings and actuated by an intermediate movement return. By their rotational movement, these cams force the drum 36 to lower automatically by compressing a coil spring 50, a leaf spring or any other compressible member placed under the pads and forming an elastic base. This spring returns the drum to its initial position when the cam stops acting on its bearings. Depending on the nature of the strips to be treated, it is necessary to reduce or increase the number of lowerings of the drum for the same determined time.
For this purpose, the camshaft is provided with a speed change 51 making it possible to vary the number of revolutions of the cams.
The rotational movement of the drum 36 is obtained by means of a worm 52 mounted on a control shaft 53 and actuating a toothed wheel 54 wedged on the shaft of the drum. During the so-called drum spacing movement, the control shaft 53 slides in the worm 52, it is actuated by an intermediate shaft 55 carrying a speed change 56 intended to vary the speed of rotation of the drum, and consequently, the speed of driving the strips. Following the composter is arranged a cylinder 57 exerting pressure on the drum by the action of a spring 58 pressing on its bearings.
This cylinder serves as a driver for the tows which, when they are treated, fall on a rolling path 59 which drives them by spreading them out over their entire length and thus facilitates their bundling.
Finally, a circular brush 60 placed on the drum, at a suitable location, and driven by a rapid rotational movement, frees the drum of gums or films which may become lodged between the rods.
As stated previously, the profile and dimensions of the grooves of the drum 36 and of the shoes 42 of the composter 40, as well as the width of the working face of the shoes and the stroke of the reciprocating rectilinear movement vary according to the nature of the fibers to be treated. .
In principle, the width of the working face of the shoes as well as the stroke of the reciprocating rectilinear movement are due to the development of the straps or the average diameter of the rods. Likewise, the shape of the grooves, as well as their dimensions, are due to the nature of the vegetable strips to be treated; for example, a dry, brittle strip offering little resistance should be treated with a flute of flatter shape, presenting less roughness or relief than a flute intended to treat a flexible strap , resistant and nervous.
The shape of the ribs may still vary depending on the state of desiccation of the strips. The table indicates, by way of example, with reference to the abc profiles shown in fig. 6, some embodiments of the grooves as well as the width of the working face of the shoes and the stroke of the reciprocating recti-line movement according to the nature of the fibers. to be treated. The limit dimensions indicated in this table are of capital importance with regard to the treatment of fibers intended to be applied to spinning. Outside these limits, it is possible to work for fiber applications other than spinning, for pulp for example.

<tb> 2 <SEP> to <SEP> 4 <SEP> mm <SEP> approximately The contact of the strap with the double groove, that of the composter and that of the drum and the combination of the two movements, one circular and the other transverse, cause this thong to be animated by a vibration and that, under this influence, each of the fibers which compose it disintegrates from the gums which weld them and from the film which covers them, then,
as a result of the circular movement of the drum, this fiber emerges bare, completely degummed, completely stripped of its skin and perfectly sound, while having retained its parallelism.
On the other hand, the intermittent spreading movement of the working parts avoids the clogging of these parts and produces, in combination with the reciprocating rectilinear movement, a cooling air current which prevents the heating and the tearing of the body. fiber. This cooling could also be achieved by circulating water in the drum and in the composter.
The automatic separation movement can act on the composter just as the reciprocating rectilinear movement can be transmitted either to the composter or to the drum, or even to these two bodies simultaneously and in the opposite direction to each other; the spacing movement can, moreover, be automatic or not and be carried out by any member other than by cam, the reciprocating rectilinear movement can also be obtained by any suitable device other than a connecting rod and the rubber band. forming a fulcrum of the shoes may be replaced by sets of leaf or coil springs or by any other member offering a soft and resistant compression resistance.
The drum can be replaced by a work table, rectilinear, animated or not by a reciprocating movement. The separation movement being given either to this table or to the composter, automatically or not, the advancement of the fibers being obtained by an appropriate mechanism.
Finally, the machine can be supplemented by a vacuum cleaner for dust and gums.
