<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
couteaux de chaque paire. ,

The present invention relates to choppers which in principle consist of a cutting shaft carrying a number of discs forming the knife holder and the knives of which act together with a support piece in the form of a comb.
Such a straw chopper is ready to be mounted on the frame of a mower-combine where it will be used to chop the straw as it leaves the latter. The straw chopper can, however, also be used with advantage following a straw baler mounted on a threshing machine. In this case, the straw hâehe will preferably be attached in a folding manner to said press in order to be able to be brought at will in front of the outlet thereof or to be folded down de'manière to leave this outlet free. Of
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
this way we will have the possibility of bringing the straw into the chopper or of pressing it into bales.
When the straw chopper is positioned in front of the baler channel, the press piston pushes the straw, which in this case obviously should not be tied in bundles, against the chopper knives.
So that the chopping of the straw can be done rationally, the present invention proposes to arrange the cutting blades in pairs on either side of the blade-holder discs, the two cutting blades of the same pair being separated by a sufficient distance to allow them to pass during their rotation, on either side of the knives with which the fixed comb of the machine is fitted. The desired spacing between the blades is obtained by means of spacers arranged on either side of the blade-holder discs.
The knives covering the fixed comb of the machine are arranged so as to take account of this spacing and are inclined at the same angle as the rotary knives, so that when these rotary knives come up to the knives covering the fixed comb, the latter occupy an intermediate place between the rotating knives.
The fixed comb consists of a profile to which are fixed the supports of the fixed blades. One of the main advantages of the present invention results from the fact that by virtue of the construction and the special shape of said supports, it is possible to employ normal blades. It is opportune, on the other hand, to manufacture these supports from stamped sheet metal, because this process guarantees the uniformity of the parts and constitutes the least expensive method of manufacture. Said stamped sheet supports are provided with one or two lugs on which the corresponding perforations provided in the knives are taken.
Because the brackets are fixed to the channel by means of one or more bolts located at the bottom of the corner of the bracket, the knives are securely held in place by the heads of the brackets.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
so-called bolts which, as they are tightened, come to take against the base of the knives and make it press harder and harder against the inclined walls of the support. When a knife is dull or damaged, it suffices to turn it over on its @ support to use the other edge. When both cutting edges are dull, the knife is easily replaced.
It goes without saying that the whole of this device can also be reversed in the sense that the knives of the fixed comb can be arranged in pairs, while the rotary knives integral with the shaft will each comprise only one blade. which will then pass between the two fixed blades.
The accompanying drawing shows schematically an exemplary embodiment; in this drawings
Figure 1 is a side view of a combine mower with incorporated straw chopper.
FIG. 2 is a partial representation showing a section of the shaft and the rotating knives as well as the fixed knives, viewed in the direction of travel of the mower-combine.
Figures 3 and 4 show respectively in section and in plan, fixed knife supports.
FIG. 5 shows a front view of the system for attaching the knives fixed in their support and of the attachment of such a support to the profile.
The frame of the combine mower 1 carries a straw chopper which consists essentially of a knife shaft 2 and a fixed knife holder 3. The knife shaft carries discs serving as supports for the knives and provided with sides 2 and lē inclined alternately to the right and to the left to which the knives 6 are attached.
The knives 6 are fixed in pairs on either side of the inclined faces, and spacers are provided to maintain a constant distance between the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
knives of each pair. ,
To adapt to this arrangement of the fixed rotary knives 6 fixed on the shaft, the knives 8 of the comb / are arranged such that they are always located at an equal distance from the rotary knives forming a pair, so as to form effective straw support points during the chopping operation. To this end, the supports.2 of the knives 8 are provided with bearing faces 10 and lugs 11, so that the exact position of the knives is strictly maintained.
The knives are attached to the brackets by the bolts 12, and the brackets are attached to the fixed profile 13 by the bolts 14. In this way, the replacement of a dull or damaged knife can o. This can be done quickly and easily, while on the other hand it is possible to quickly remove a certain number of supports if it is desired to change the cutting length of the straw.
It follows from the foregoing that the device according to the invention clearly constitutes a progress and offers a solution which is both simple and effective.
