<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

IMPROVEMENTS IN WOOD TOASTING OVENS
The improvements which are the subject of the present invention relate to ovens for roasting wood such as those described in French Patent No. 839,732 filed on December 14, 1937.
In these ovens the woods are brought to a well-determined temperature, automatically regulated between narrow limits, by introducing hot gases, the flow of which is regulated automatically, according to their temperature, in the space between a crown. annular and a cone preferably located at about a third of the height of a vertical chimney constituting the roasting oven,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Bes improvements forming the subject of the present invention aim to prevent spontaneous ignition of wood during treatment. When the oven is operated at low temperature, this ignition is relatively unlikely to occur, but when it is operated, on the contrary, at a high temperature,
above 200 degrees for example, some of the already treated pieces of wood at the base of the chimney are obviously very easily flammable, and as a result, when the hot gases come from the combustion gases supplied by a separate fireplace , entrained sparks may cause inflammation.
Such an eventuality will be remedied to a large extent by adopting a sufficient length for the pipe for supplying hot gases into the chimney, for example by arranging it in the form of a coil or a zigzag, or even by inserting a pot. of sufficient size, filled with metal turpentine (or equivalent material) in which the sparks are arrested.
But even such a precaution may become insufficient if the treatment temperature is chosen high enough to be able to cause spontaneous ignition of certain pieces of wood which have reached a fairly pronounced state of rotting. It is then possible to resort to the arrangement shown in FIG. 1- In accordance with this arrangement, the network of tubes 9 heated by the hearth 10 is supplied by a fan 8, the inlet pipe 5 of which is united with the top of the chimney 1.
Furthermore, the latter is provided with a closing plate 40 which carries a hopper 41 for loading green wood to be treated, itself provided with a removable cover 42 and consequently the charged air.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
of water which was previously released into the atmosphere is subjected to a closed circuit circulation and when passing through the tubes 9, superheated steam is formed which ensures the treatment of the wood contained in the chimney 1. It It is evident that each loading effected by the cover 42 brings a certain weight of water into this chimney, and it follows that the internal pressure in the apparatus could reach an excess value if this cover were firmly attached.
If, on the contrary, being pivoted at 43 for example, it is only kept in the closed position by its weight, it forms a valve yielding to a slight overpressure, and the installation can operate indefinitely, the extraction of treated wood. being operated either by hand, by means of the hatch 44, or by an automatic system. Finally, there may optionally be provided at 45 a sprayer supplied with an impregnation liquid, heavy hydrocarbon or the like.
In any case, the presence of water vapor avoids any danger of spontaneous ignition of the treated wood, and an equivalent result can also be achieved in the case where the hot gases come from the burnt gases of the hearth; This presence then ensures, in addition, the extinction of the flames coming from the hearth 10.
Figure 2 attached shows such an installation; this figure moreover specifies certain accessory arrangements, which are advantageously applicable. Thus, the enclosure 11 is surrounded by an envelope 46 intended to recover the heat radiated by the walls of this enclosure; to this end, the adjustable air intake 10 'is operated in the space provided between 11 and 46, and the same is true of a second 10 "intake also adjustable outlet
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
above the grate of the hearth 10, and serving to perfect the combustion. In addition, the fuel supplying the hearth 10 is stored in the hopper 47, provided with the loading door 48.
When the fan 8 is in action, it sucks through the pipe 6 on the one hand the high temperature gases which come from the hearth 10 and on the other hand, through the pipe 5, the gases charged with wet vapor collected as previously at the top of the chimney 1. A register 49 will be provided to regulate this inflow, preferably in dependence on thermostat 13, by means of an appropriate control, indicated diagrammatically at 50. As before, the excess gas and steam escapes to the outside by lifting the cover 42 forming the valve.
It goes without saying that the preceding arrangements lend themselves to numerous variants, all in accordance with the spirit of the invention. In particular, the thermostat 13 can be of very different types; electric, bi-metallic, liquid, etc. .. and the same applies to the direct or indirect control (by servo-motor) of the control valves; on the other hand, it will be advantageous to carefully insulate the elements of the installation, including the connection pipes.
Finally, for the sake of economy, the walls of the furnace can be made of non-metallic materials: cement and the like or derivatives, bricks, etc ...
The object of other improvements is to specify how certain known devices or those shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 can be combined with a view to producing an apparatus exhibiting all the advantages specific to these devices.
These improvements consist, if we consider the exchanger furnace represented in FIG. 1, in introducing, into the general circuit transporting the calories, gases originating from the combustion of the hearth; their introduction into the circuit
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
/ considered preferably operating at a point of the circuit located between the cold part of the furnace and the exchanger, a mixed device is thus formed comprising in combination the arrangements of Figures 1 and 2, the fan being able to be placed either upstream, or downstream of the exchanger.
The improvement thus achieved will moreover be clearly understood with the aid of the attached FIG. 3 on which the same figures have been kept to designate the same members already shown in FIGS. 1 and 2. The gases coming from the hearth 10 go to the exhaust chimney 50 after passing through the tubes 9 of the exchanger. This chimney 50 is provided with a register 51, upstream of which is provided a hot gas intake 52, also provided with a register 53. These gases can thus be added in suitable proportions with the mixture of gases and vapors beforehand. - lifted by the pipe 5 at the top of the treatment chimney 1.
Under the action of the fan 8, the whole is conducted by the pipe 54 at the bottom of an annular casing 55 which surrounds the body of the exchanger 11, and this casing is provided at its upper part with orifices 56, which allow the gases in question to enter the exchanger, from which they escape through the pipe 6 to be finally brought into the circular distribution gallery 14. The role of the envdbppe 55 is to ensure cooling suitable for the walls of the fireplace while very effectively insulating the body of the exchanger 11.
In Figure 3 there is shown at 57 a conical grid which is an improvement also important !!: This grid, which extends along the cone 4 provided in Figures 1 and 2 comprises bars leaving between them a clearance was preferably progressing from top to bottom; the purpose of this provision is to accompany the pieces of wood up to
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
the diversion door 44 without being able to find an attachment point anywhere.
In a similar vein, it is also possible to improve the conditions under which the descent of pieces of wood along the chimney 1 takes place by gravity.
Especially if the latter has a large diameter, it may happen that the pieces making up the central vein tend to descend more rapidly than those located near the walls; this drawback will be remedied by permanently disposing in the axis of the chimney 1 a rod or cylinder 58 of suitable diameter and length, in order to produce a certain braking moderating the rate of descent into the pipe. region considered 'An equivalent efret can be obtained by means of fixed sheets presenting a determined profile, etc ...
These various means make it possible to facilitate the descent of the mass of the material under heat treatment (cut wood, etc.) along the chimney 1. It is in fact important that this descent takes place as regularly as possible, d 'on the one hand to obtain a good quality product, on the other hand to prevent pieces of said mass from sticking to the walls, mainly in the low regions of the chimney where the temperature is particularly high; such clashes obviously promote the risk of ignition of said pieces under the action of hot gases.
A particularly interesting way to achieve this descent is shown in Figure 4; according to this figure representing the lower part of the chimney containing the wood to be treated, the conical grid 57 provided in FIG. 3 e replaced by a cylindrical grid * This cylindrical grid head (57 in FIG. 4) shown in dotted lines, extends cone 4 and may be formed by a series of vertical bars distributed regularly along the generatrices of a cylinder. The adoption of a similar grid obviously reduces
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
the risk of snagging to a minimum, but the absence of constriction at the base may excessively facilitate the flow of the mass of material through the discharge door 44.
It is easy to reduce this flow rate to a suitable value by extending the rod or cylinder 58 of FIG. 3 by a second cylindrical grid (also shown in dotted lines) concentric with the first.
According to FIG. 5, pn can also reduce the risks of ignition of the mass subjected to the heat treatment by leading the hot gases towards the discharge door 44 through a sleeve 59 connected to the pipe. admission 6; the pieces of material subjected to the highest temperature are thus located immediately above said door, and can therefore be easily removed at each diversion.
To avoid direct contact of the mass with the walls at high temperature, they can also be insulated. A simple solution to this end consists in covering the assembly 6, 59 with a shield 60, which comes to bear on the walls 2 (FIG. 5a) and whose transverse profile may for example have the shape indicated in FIG. 5b; the air space formed between said shield and the assembly 6,59 constitutes an excellent thermal insulator. In the same order of ideas, the end of the sleeve 59 may be surrounded by a cylinder 61, solid or meshed and of suitable diameter, etc.
Finally, it goes without saying that the various arrangements which have just been described by way of nonlimiting examples include numerous variants without departing from the scope of the invention.
